Decorated the cookies yesterday. I needed something to put on the table first and found this pretty vinyl tablecloth at DG for $4. It looked so festive that I've decided to leave it on there for awhile. Cookies went today to a local pet health store I frequent, the staff are always so helpful. You should have seen their faces light up when I carried that big plate of cookies in. Didn't take long for them to dig in either! "These won't last long", I heard someone say. :)

I didn't catch the name of the variety carrot you are growing. Your picture looks exactly like some varieties are meant to look upon maturity, and they will not get longer or lager. If you bought carrots specifically bred for heavy, clay soil you may have started out with seeds for one of these. Please google carrots meant for heavy, clay soil. I have clay soil, have been improving it for three decades with my animal manures and other organic matter and still buy a 'half long' carrot, like Nantes half long or Danvers half long. They are bred to be short and stubby so that they mature without distortion from that type of soil. The variety to which I linked is Paris Market Baron. It looks very similar to the type carrot you produced. Nothing is cut in stone to say you must grow the long carrots, just because it is the one you're likely to buy in markets. It sometimes is easier to just plant a variety meant for your soils, than build raised beds. Here is a link that might be useful: Crocus garending website. Well, lilyfinch, I also do alfalfa tea several times per season. I usually do it after spring flush is over to jolt the roses back into flowering. Strangely enough, I do not find the smell foul or awful. It reminds me of farms and horses (and maybe stables.) Once I made the mistake of brewing a garbage can of it under our bedroom window. Still, we didn't hate it. The worst part for me is distributing it and being swarmed by house and horse flies in the process. I would never ever add the pellets to the soil because in my experience, some sort of fermentation occurs which could kill roots and plants. The hardest part for me is finding garbage cans in the yard that don't have cracks or holes. Last summer, I put a big plastic bag in one of the broken cans and it worked fine. I get two batches from each can. I do remember Pappu's thread--it is hilarious!

Wolflover. It is so wonderful to see you here! I know you're there, but you don't post as often as you used to and I miss you when you aren't posting. That was an important pepper tidbit I learned shortly after moving here, and I did find, too, that not letting the plants be exposed to cold temps below 50 degrees did make a huge difference in how well/how early they produce. I wish I'd learned it 10 or 15 years earlier. My peppers are a lot more pampered...carried in and out just like yours...but they don't seem to mind being planted later. Even though I plant them about a month later than I used to, they produce earlier than they used to. Seems odd, doesn't it, but I'll keep doing it since it works. I haven't tried Aji Dulce. I'll have to put it on my list. The habaneros I grow are for DH and his friends. I barely survive inhaling the fumes when I'm cutting them up, and I don't eat them at all except in pepper jellies. Aji Dulce probably would be just right for a 'pepper wimp' like me. You've made a lot more salsa than I have, but I've been bogged down in fruit. Now that the fruit is over, I can spend more time on peppers, pepper jellies and salsa. I canned about 85 jars of salsa last year and it wasn't enough, so I'm shooting for 120-130 this year. I still have a long way to go to reach that goal though. Adellabedella, I can see why several glasses of milk and lots of bread would be required. I grew a yellow habanero type pepper called 'Fatali' (beware any pepper with the word fatal as part of its name) for several years and thought all our friends knew it was really, really, really hot. DH gave some Fatali peppers to a coworker who took them home. Before he could even warn his wife "Watch out, they're really hot", she'd taken one out of the bag and popped it into her mouth. It made blisters in her mouth. Blisters! She could laught about it later, but she was in all kinds of misery at the time. She thought it was one of those sweet squash peppers or mushroom peppers and never dreamed it was a habanero type. Dawn

NYCBD and Christine- Thanks. They taste fine and we will enjoy them for awhile as it made lots of cookies. I put a lot in my freezer to keep while visiting DM. Christine - did you post the cute Santa cookies on CEFs post or was that someone else? NY - still enjoying your marvelous kitchen? I almost made it to NY for the marathon(as support and not running that far currently) OldBat - have fun shopping. I think the silicon rolling sheet will work fine once I have the dough at the right temperature. This replaced my old Tupperware model. Loved your picture of your family with the snow out your window at Christmas. I am hosting a 3 Kings Party brunch on Jan 4(in reality it should be Jan 6th) but we hold it on the closest Sunday - maybe I will try some other new recipes.

Those decorated cookies sure take a lot of time. They turned out so pretty. I bet you'll be their favorite visitor for a long time!

Very nice! I love that they are kinda puffy, the cookies. They look like the soft kind... do you have a recipe to share? Usually sugar cookies to me, turn out flat and hard. I love soft cookies.

Sure, here is the recipe. I found it years ago in between the pages of an old book:
"Mother's Sugar Cookies"

1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
2/3 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
3 eggs, beaten
3 2/3 cups sifted flour
2 tsp. baking powder

Cream butter and 2 cups sugar with soda, salt and vanilla. Add beaten eggs. Sift flour and baking powder together. Add to creamed mixture. Chill dough till firm enough to roll out on floured pastry cloth. Roll a little sugar in on top of the dough. Cut with biscuit cutter or into fancy shapes.
Bake at 425 till brown on a greased and floured cookie sheet. (I only bake until the bottoms are brown, not the entire cookie)

Then someone wrote: "This recipe is very old. Do not add any liquid other than the eggs. I have won with it many times".

Oh forgot. The recipe doesn't mention how many it makes but I can get about 28 cut-out cookies from one batch of dough.

Please share your icing recipe you use too. I love this kind of cookie, but I have never made iced ones I liked. Yours look yummy!!!!!

For the icing, I usually just use the recipe on the bag of confectionery sugar with butter added.

But, I must confess I used canned frosting Wednesday. I actually like the confectionery sugar recipe better because the icing hardens off more, not break your teeth hard, but you know what I mean. Better for cut-outs.

Is "butter" really necessary or will margarine do? I never buy butter.
