9 and 13 year old boys...

Anyone have any that age? Or, as grandsons?

My nephews in Germany are that age, and I am at a loss, for what to bring them from here, in the US.

hand held electronic games? ipods, but they are pricey. tshirt or sweatshirt with a college or state name?

Any particular price range? The usual smart alec answer is 9 & 13 yo girls, but that's politically incorrect these days.

Clothes and food are usually good options with that age. Something that is compatible with hobbies? Sporting goods.

Also, is it intended as a souvenir or a more "traditional" gift?

I have had dozens of these with this problem. I don't know why so many complain about the carbureators being plastic, etc. but they are so simple to work on. Just clean the carb and I usually remove the pilot jet and clean the orifices with a thin wire as well as the main jet orifice. I highly recommend installing a good gas filter like the larger Briggs clear style you can get anywhere. I have made them standard fare on my Lawn Boys for years. I don't like those "York Peppermint Patties" filters though. While you're in the carb you may want to do the minor mod on the jets (very very simple) to make her run better and less prone to clogging in the future. Walt is correct, if the dealer gave you that line, he really doesn't understand 2 cycle engines. They are incredibly simple once understood. But that can probably be said about anything in life. BTW, the elcheapo throttle control plastic detent typically breaks and I wouldn't worry about it. It is really for the idiots who can't figure out what a choke setting is. The better alum. deck models got a better throttle control, much smoother.

Kay.... Going through the teen years can be like the terrible two's but with a much larger child! It can last for years. Don't get discouraged. I have a DS16 and just trying to have, what I consider, a normal conversation with him can sometimes make me want to stick hot pokers in my eyes....or his. It might be a good idea to talk with him at a time that is calm and remind him what the rules are. I have tried to lay down some sentences that I can say to DS16 during a discussion or disagreement that can remind him of the rules....Such as...."Remember who you are speaking to."...."You need to lower your voice."....."Your tone of voice sounds disrespectful to me." and so on. Sometimes he doesn't even know that he is loud or that I think that the way he is saying something in bothering me. All of that being said....do what you can to rule out the things that we all fear as parents of teens....alcohol or drug use, inappropriate internet use, depression, becoming sexually active. I'm sure I have left things out but you get the message. This day and age is tough. I feel for these kids. All the more reason to not let go of your house rules when it comes to respect and safety for the teens. Discussing with him some changes that he might like as he matures is an option. Stress the "As he matures" part. He needs to learn to handle his anger, talk about his feelings and still follow the rules. Each one comes to a calmer place at a different time. Some take a long time. The hard knocks of life can be the only teachers for some kids. Parents lose IQ points big time when their kids hit their teens. I wouldn't rule out getting him into see a counselor if you feel his anger is beyond control. Some kids can't talk to their parents and a third party can really help. It doesn't mean that their is something wrong with him. His brain and his body are on mega drive right now. Watch how he grows in the next few years!....I have heard that every growth spurt, whether it be mental or physical is preceded by an emotional time of turmoil. I think that is true when a child is entering into the just beginning to walk months and the teen years. Just fasten your seat belt. The ride will be bumpy at times. It is a good thing that God gives us these kids as sweet little babies. If we got them as teenagers they would likely mysteriously disappear...or we would. I remember thinking, when my DD20 was a teen and she would be mouthing off to me...."You know child, you are standing way to close with your back to those stairs to be talking to me like that."...Of course I would never push her but a bit of a sense of humor helps!!!

Without getting sexist about the issue, now you have me thinking part of this might be a girl thing men don't understand. Men and women communicate differently, we all know that. And it starts young. Yeah, our sons and daughters both need verbal stimuli and physical stimuli. But there really is a difference in the equation. Girls and women generally need that verbal release of stress every day. Boys need a physical release of stress. I know mothers suddenly frustrated by their 10-12 y/o son's intense physical expression. Someone new to boys might be annoyed by the natural change level of aggression that comes on pre-puberty. Boys are more likely to naturally release their daily stress by wrestling with each other, hitting a ball as hard as they can, running for no reason. I've seen it with my boys. Girls have to tell stories to someone to get the feelings out. Sometimes the same story over and over again. But of course we don't make that an excuse to let our boys aggression or physical expressions run rampant. They have to learn to focus and release it in healthy ways, or without taking it out on other people. So I can see that girls need to do the same thing, learn to focus that need to release in words, without taking it out too much on the people around them. ;o) I don't think I'd get her a cell phone either. I'd get a journal. I can see that she would learn to use the talking to control you sometimes, hold you hostage just to test the limits of your patience or even if she's angry at your control over her as a parent so she flexes control where she can. I will admit to having done that a few times in my life. I remember my mother having conversations with me about how I was using words to control other people's feelings. So I think the trick would be to recognize when 1)she truly needs to be heard, 2)when she's manipulating you, and 3) when it's casual conversation that only seems manipulative b/c you're worn out from your own day before she even saw you. My 13 y/o is a boy and doesn't do the talking thing. But he does the physical bully thing to his siblings. I send him outside to release that energy in a better way. He is learning to recognize in himself the energy building in him that will either come out as anger or controlled with exercise. My 10 y/o is a boy, too, and is starting to feel that physical energy he doesn't know what to do with. DD is only 7, but talks a lot, especially in the car! Sometimes when the AC is running I really cannot hear what she is saying. I had to tell her the other day I can either listen to her or run the AC, "Is what you're saying important enough to let the car get hot?" It wasn't. LOL, she chose the AC. Sometimes at home I've sat and listened to her for 20 minutes. But then it's like it encouraged her and she doesn't stop, she follows me right to the bathroom door and keeps talking. I have to tell her "It's not your turn anymore." Or if I'm trying to get dinner going and can't pay attention to so many things at once, or the kitchen noises make it impossible to have conversation at the same time, I just tell her "Is this really more important that our family having some dinner?" She needs to learn when it can wait. I think this sounds like an issue of family dynamics. While you don't want to let one member's habit control the family dynamics, you can't let resentment of that person's habit control the family dynamics either. You have to be careful not to generalize and define that person by that one annoying habit.

I so wanted to learn ballet when I was younger. The other girls in my small school all took various dance lessons. Couple of years later one of the mothers told me that she was sorry that my parents would not let me join the group. Apparently the other parents were willing to pay for my classes but the girl that was delegated to ask me lied to her parents and I was never asked. I have wondered if my feet would be in better shape if someone had told me that strengthening my feet by standing and walking on the tips of my toes before my bones were strong enough.

My nephews always want Harley Davison T'shirts from different cities. They have the name of the city and store that you get them from. They have quite a collection now. Just a thought!

They would probably enjoy an assortment of brand name candies and cookies that are probably not available there.

My Grandsons are 9 and 11. The nine-year old wants every skateboard ever made and the 11-yr. old only wants cash and video games.

Lots of good ideas so far, but some are to pricey.

I haven't seen them since they were 5 and 9, and so far, I know they want peanut butter cups, aka reeses.

I might just give them some cash, when we are out and about...

Legos! They come in all age ranges up to 14. You'd probably have to check with Mom and Dad though to see if they have any, and if they have certain ones they want or what their interests are that way. For example Monster Fighters, Off Roaders, Star Wars, etc.

I recently gave a 12 year old friend an Amazon gift certificate, and he immediately found a Lego Set he wanted. His Mom had told me he was nuts about them, so I felt sure he would find something he wanted.

Ask them what they would like--clothes, games, food and be sure and check what you can take---and do they have any electronic items you can get stuff for? If they are reluctant, just be honest with them and ask--what do you really want that won't be too expensive. I find that most kids are honest and do respect your financial boundaries.

I have 10 and 12 year old boys. This is a hard year to shop. Mine are done with toys. You might look up some Oklahoma t-shirts or sports teams, etc. Sometimes stuff like that is considered to be pretty cool if coming from the US. Size wise, I'd look at Youth large and Adult small-medium. Post cards would be neat. Are our toys like an 8 ball or slinkies or even Twister available in Germany? They are fun.

Adding: Not sure of the availability of duct tape in Germany. It comes in all colors and sizes. My kids love it for all sorts of things including making duct tape wallets.

My grandson is 13, he's into games and his GF. He wanted a Browning jacket this year. I got him all clothes. I was at a loss as to what to get him. He has everything.

Vote for Legos! Actually I got my 9 year old grandson some NanoBlocks. The set builds to 7.5"x3"x3" and is 580 blocks in the set. They are so-o small.
Too cool and Toys R Us has them.

For boys in Germany, how about t-shirts or sweatshirts from American universities or pro teams? My 9 yr old grandson is getting a UC Santa Cruz Banana Slug t-shirt.

Last year I bought DH GIANT Reeses PB cups for $10. I think they were at CVS. Not sure how much space you will have-boys that age like Nerf guns. They also usually like funny tee shirts or some with logos Coke, maybe Reeses!). Sears might have those. Maybe they are just for older kids (logos), not sure.

I have 10 and 14 yr. old grandsons. They like cold, hard cash (to save up for video games, etc). As do the 10 and 12 yr. old granddaughters. I personalize the cash gifts by doing origami with the bills. And this saves me shipping costs, if I'd bought a present (that they'd then want to return for cash.) There are a ton of videos on the net about doing origami.

I shot off another email to my brother.

Electronics are out, first of all, the expense, second the current in Germany is 220 rather than the US standard of 110.

Legos.... well, my brother had a HUGE selection of Legos, and I know, the boys got some for Christmas in the past. I hate thinking of how many rubbermaid totes they can fill now.

Thanks for the HUGE Reeces idea. I will look for them, and just slip some cash to them as well.

How about Itunes gift cards? Almost like giving cash, but not quite and easy to transport. And every kid uses itunes.
