Where have all the finches gone?

We started feeding the wild birds as soon as we first moved here in 1975. We had loads of finches then--sparrows, purple finches, and gold finches. Over the years their numbers have diminished, and I hardly even see a sparrow anymore.

I bought some niger seed and set out a finch feeder last week. So far it hasn't been touched. I hope the finches truly went to "a better place," and haven't died off.

Evening Grosbeaks are in a finch subfamily. We had them in huge numbers at the house we lived in before this one. I hand-tamed them (along with the other birds), and they were so much fun--not to mention gorgeous!
