Interesting--and useful too.

My dad had heart surgery in a Seventh Day Adventist hospital in Orlando in 1989. The food made a huge impression on me. Up to that time, the only hospital food I'd experienced was institution food: cheap meats, processed foods, starch, and grease. Nothing that would promote health. The Florida Hospital food was something else entirely. It was wonderful! It also fooled my dad, who swore he was eating meat and not eating yogurt. :-)

Among other things, SDA dogma recommends healthy lifestyles for its members - the data tells a story. The members I know seem to pick and choose which of the official teachings they follow and which they don't (one couple I know are vegetarians but very heavy drinkers). No matter, that's what personal beliefs are all about.

Adventists have long operated hospitals and encouraged members to enter health care professions. Oddly enough, the one SDA medical school in the US, Loma Linda (in the community covered in alisande's referenced article), is located in a part of California that many find undesirable to live near because it's very unhealthfully smoggy out there.

Hi everyone, I am a artificial rock contractor (pool and spa) and an expert with specialty concrete mixes - specifically vermiculite which is also commonly known as "pool base". I have read through this thread and there are a few things I wanted to offer some clarity for: 1) The reason that you should pre-water the vermiculite is becasue vermiculite is incredibly absorbant. If you do not pre-water it will leech water from your concrete depriving it of moisture and likely leading to hairline cracking and crazing if the surface layers. The mix itself can still be "dry" as someone eluded above that concrete that is too wet becomes weak. This is extremely true. Pre-watered vermiculite is much easier to proportion and regulate the water in the mix. 2) Soap in concrete mixes is an "air entrainer" as discussed in a post above however soap has long since been used as an ingredient in vermiculite concrete mixes for different reasons. Vemiculite concrete is very sticky and can be difficult to trowel. Adding a tiny bit of soap, like dish soap, makes the concrete smoother and less inclined to cling to the tools. 3) It was posted above that concrete for construction does not get adjusted for water content. This is not true. Concrete is and can be adjusted on the fly in almost every mixing condition to account for changing conditions, heat, direct sunlight, concrete consistency, slump etc. There is a point past which you should not hydrate the mix but before that it is no problem at all to adjust slump. Every single mix through a mixer gets individually watered. Ready mix concrete will ask you if you are happy with the slump of the mix when they arrive to your site and will wet it up if you want them to. 4) Use water reducer to achieve desired placement slump without compromising the strength of the concrete. A tiny bit too much water equals a substantial loss of finished strength. 5) The best release agent for silicone is wax based release agents. In most cases if you are not sure what to use you should use wax based. I hope this info helps some of you out. My father died in '68, with brain tumors...brought on by exposure to the chemical benzene. He was 64 years old. My mother died when she was almost 95. She had been in a nursing home for six and a half years due to dementia, and probably would be alive today if she had been easier to deal with and could have lived at home. The doctor told me she was the healthiest woman he had ever seen for her age. She had nothing wrong with her as far as heart problems, blood pressure, or anything like that. She died from pneumonia. My family easily lives into their 80's. My sister and brother both died at 84. My other brother is 79 now. My great grandmother, 7 times removed, survived being disemboweled by Indians and being scalped...lived to be 110 by some counts and to 90 by others. She went on to have 10 children after this. She died in the early 1700's. There were two books written about her, that I know of...possibly more. Almost all of her children lived into their 80's. My mother and my father both trace their ancestry to her. Myself, I am seldom sick. I haven't had a cold in at least 15 years. I have never had the flu...have no problems with cholesterol or blood pressure or blood sugar. However, I am extremely accident prone and I have had many serious injuries. My father used to say that a horse would kill me some day. If I can get around that, I will probably live a long time.

I'm always amused by Americans' obsession with top loaders. I grew up in Germany, and I only ever saw a single top loader ... they felt antiquated in the 1980s. I agree that the first front loaders on the American market were of very questionable quality. But that doesn't mean the design is fundamentally flawed. You can get perfectly good front loaders and they clean and dry just fine. Even SpeedQueen builds them these days. But a with all things, there of course is a learning curve. In this case, that mostly means buying the appropriate detergent and following the manufacturer's instructions about what to do at the end of the cycle (e.g. leave the doors cracked open for a few hours). We've had Maytag front loaders for a couple of years and they worked fine until an internal strut broke and wasn't worth the repair. We have since had Electrolux washers and dryers and they're unremarkable ... I guess that's a good thing. I agree with Rita that German brands are probably the best bet for more compact designs. We love our huge laundry machines, but then we have little kids and wash seemingly non stop

Yeah back in the early 1990s, there was an article in Southern Living about how one of the big public gardens in the south, maybe "Magnolia Gardens" would order a bunch of huge, well grown Delphs from a northern wholesaler. Probably in gallon containers or even bigger. They would plant them in a display bed in late winter, let them bloom much earlier than they would in the north, and discard them. Kind of similar to how Longwood Gardens gets their magnificent display of blue poppies in late winter. They are grown to blooming size by an Alaska wholesaler. Shipped to PA in the fall ,at no small expense to be sure. Then using day length manipulation and controlled lighting to trick them into having a shorter winter, making them go into summer bloom in March.

Lindsey, I seem to remember you saying you gave up dairy entirely a while ago. Are you still avoiding it? Have you noticed any benefits? I am a vegetarian but still eat some eggs and dairy but am considering giving up dairy. I have read The China Study and notice I feel better when I avoid it.

I haven't read it. A few people I know who are much better educated than I am in matters relating to health and science have called it a biased book written to be a best seller, not one that contains valid science. (edit to add - in reading over this later, what I wrote seems like an overly specific answer. Just coincidentally, the topic of this book once came up in a discussion I had with some friends, a couple, both of whom are physicians. My comment is what they said)

Having said that, I share the view (in a very moderate, middle of the road way) that many do and will suffer adverse health consequences because of their diets. Too many calories, too much fried food, too much fat and too many chemical additives. However, to swing full over to a vegan or paleo diet is too extreme for me.

It takes a lot of effort to eat a nutritious diet as a vegan or vegetarian - many eat too much in the way of carbs and too little in the way of protein. Most people can achieve healthy results by limiting calories and eating more simply prepared fruits and vegetables. Moderation in all things, including diet philosophies.

Growing up we always had SDA doctors, and received good advice from them, but didn't follow it as strict as I should have when I left home.
I agree snidely Loma Linda is not the healthiest of places, but when it was established it was prime land, and the air was not as it is now. I have 2 friends that got their nursing degrees there, way back in the early 60's.

I had surgery in an SDA hospital and felt so calm when the surgeon said a prayer to God with the words "to guide my hands and bring your child to full health and happiness" I loved that.

My Grandma was an Adventist so I'm familiar with the doctrine and the health teachings. They were far ahead of the times as far as health habits. And Friday sundown to Saturday sundown really is the Sabbath. The only area in which I disagree with Adventists is that they insist that dead is dead and no one goes to Paradise upon death, but wait for Christ's return.

yayagirl, I'm glad that you found your surgeon's pre-procedure prayer to be comforting.

I hope you understand that many people wouldn't have had the same reaction you did.
