Considering... near ... starting ... into ... retirement?

There are several discussions and some useful information over on the "Retirement" forum.

I wrote one, a few years ago, about how to manage our assets in order to develop the income that one needs over that 35 year period from 65 to 100. But - now some are living longer than that!

I figure that it's still useful ... even more so, now that there's been substantial recovery in the equity markets.

Better to run out of days before running out of dollars ... than the other way around!

I retired at age 54, after 30 1/2 years in the teaching field.

No regrets! I'm 74 now.

Live off my teachers retirement, and social security is put back for emergencies and fun things.

DH and I retired early. Yes, it did take careful managing of funds during the early years. Mother is in her late 90's and still manages. Retirement is the most wonderful reward, right up there with being grandparents. Early retirement made it possible to move to be close to the grands. We grew up very poor with goals of education and future. Yes, it would best to run out of days before dollars. We are 75 and have no regrets.

Sally - you are right on. I will be 64 in April, have had 3 knee surgeries, keep up 20 acres, 40 something miniature horses, a 2 story house and gardening. Graduated nursing school at age 53. Lots of projects are not completed when I want them to be but I have lots to look forward to. I do have help feeding horses and unloading feed 4 days a week. My other daily helper that I'd had for 6 years recently had a blown heart valve at age 47 so he unfortunately is no longer able to work for me. I adore getting up and seeing what is blooming and growing, dont even think about age, just do exactly what I want to do. I AM careful of my knees as I want to make a liar out of my doctor who said I would have to have knee replacement surgery in 10 yrs. The trick is - keep moving, do what you want and dont let anyone dictate what you can or cant do. If I want to come in and rest a bit - I do. One night last fall I stayed up nearly all night, burning feed sacks, potting plants, working in the barn.....people can do much more than they think they can. I always sleep well at night because I work hard. And I feel great. I hate to go to bed at night because I still want to be out in the yard. But am going to make myself tonite because I am treating myself to a Tyler trip tomorrow, going to Blue Moon Gardens and Chamblees where I will no doubt fill up the car with roses. Dont know where they will go, but am thinking positively that I will find a place! To love to garden is the greatest gift - enjoying being outside.....doesnt matter how much one accomplishes...but just to be outside and participate in the miracle of growth! Greetings again, folks, And when did you ever see a G I C ... ... produce any growth? The only return that they'll produce ... is produced now ... and taxed now ... at top rate. The stock that I bought 45 years ago for about $4.20 or so was paying about 10 - 12 cents annual dividend ... which was taxed then at low rate, plus for the latest six years at an even lower rate. In June of '07, when I could have sold it for $107.00, it was paying me $3.08 per year, at that even lower tax rate than earlier, and the annual payment increased to $3.48 later that year. Their involvement with the U.S. financial fiasco resulted in the price of the stock sslliding tto $40.00 - but they maintained the dividend at $3.48. The price has recovered to about $75.00 now ... and they recently increased the dividend to $3.60. That current income is taxed at a much lower rate than interest that I might earn. And I haven't had to talk to the income tax people about the increase in value of the asset, during all of those years. I don't have to report to the income tax people until I either sell the stock ... or die ... neither of which I plan to do, this week or next. When I sell the stock, I deduct the $4.20 that I paid from the, e.g. $74.20? proceeds of sale, to produce a capital gain of $70.00 ... and I pay tax at regular rate on half of that amount. But not until I sell, or die - nothing till then. However - if I transfer the stock to a charity, I get a tax-deductible receipt for the full amount - and I pay no income tax on that increase. And didn't pay about 2.5% of the value annually to a management company, as I'd have to with a mutual fund. You figure it: 45 years at 2.5% of the ongoing value of the fund ... comes out to about 112.5%, doesn't it? No wonder few mutual funds grow faster than the segment of the market in which the manager operates! Looks like a good deal, to me. ole joyful

You probably already have an idea of what type of house you like: Farmhouse, bungalow, modern, whatever. Keeping that preference in mind, search for a location that suits your needs and will work well with the type of house you like (for example, I'm in a rural area; an ultra-modern design would look out of place here in my county). While you're searching, consider what services are nearby: Public transit, doctor's offices, etc. Once you have secured your location and you know whether your land is flat or whatever else, which direction has the best sunshine and views, etc., then you're ready to think about a house plan. Do not rush yourself in putting together your plan; a year or more isn't too much to allot to this process. Start now studying plans and educating yourself about what you like and don't like (we started out with a list of "must haves", but after going through X number of plans, we've determined that three of them were always iron-clad necessities, while we're more flexible on the others). Likely you won't be able to fit EVERYTHING you want into one plan; compromises will be necessary. Most people here are enamored of the Not So Big House series, and it's a good place to start, but you'll find other books too. As a part of that studying, be sure to pay attention to the things that'll make your life easy as you age; for example pay particular attention to the bathroom design -- what's popular isn't necessarily what's useful to an elderly person. Yes, you should consider budget, but only you know whether that's a big deal or not. Speaking only for myself, we are building a house far beneath our means, so we're not really thinking about it much. Rather, we are choosing to build a modest-sized house that will be easy to maintain (both in terms of cost and effort).

Bringing in dirt from anywhere means bringing in weed seed. The dirt can be sandy, silty or clay, but it will have seed in it. Expect to pull weeds for the first year and possibly more. Many soils (especially clays) in Texas are calcareous, that is derived from limestone, chalk and limey marls. They are naturally high in minerals, but need lots of organic matter to unlock those minerals. This information comes from a book—Gardening Success With Difficult Soils by Scott Ogden. Plan to add composted plant matter and manures to these imported soils. Sandy soils need compost primarily to hold water and nutrients that naturally leach through. "Garden soils" are mostly composted tree trimmings. In fact, potting and garden soils don't contain soil at all. Even the minerals perlite and vermiculite found in potting soil add no mineral nutrients. The addition of major and minor mineral nutrients is important. Dillo Dirt is a product of Austin's waste recovery efforts that combines sewage sludge with tree and lawn trimmings that are composted together for several months. In my opinion you should start with real soil and add 20% compost to it—1 container of compost added to 4 containers of soil. Overfill the beds you make, and water them well to settle the soil. It may settle by half over the next year; wait to plant shrubs until the soil level stops radically settling. Expect to top off these beds next year with more compost-enriched soil. Each year after that 1/2 inch of compost should be added as a top dressing to maintain soil fertility. My advice is long term, because that is, IMO, the better way. Too often people buy plants and bring them home without knowing where to put them. One really should consider what the plants need in the way of water, sunlight, soil and climate before digging a hole and plopping them in.

We're transitioning into retirement now. DH works 3 days a week and this summer he'll leave for good. He has spent many, many hours over the years planning for this. Now it's time for him to enjoy what his hard work has earned him.

We both retired within the past 12 months. Since then, we have cruised for 70 days; we have another one coming up in February for 25 days. And, we booked one for November next year from San Diego to Lima, Peru and back!

Yeah, we did some saving during our working years; but now we are spending it. And, having fun doing it. We are getting our SS, and don't intend to touch other money for at least 5 years (a lot depends on the economy then).

I loved my job, but the lure of cruising for longer periods was the deciding factor in my retirement decision.

We took early retirements. I was 46; DH was 52. Fortunately, we both had good jobs with good retirement benefits. But, more importantly, we are excellent financial managers and had invested wisely. We still save a nice chunk of money each month, and our money will outlast us, thankfully. We have now been retired for 20 years, and are glad we were able--based on good behavior--to "get out on early parole"!

We are talking more and more about retirement and hope to go within 3 years, maybe sooner. I think financially we will be fine. DH always worries about the $ but to me it's the same as deciding to have kids...if you wait until you have "enough" money, you'll never do it. We are both 61 and becoming increasingly disenchanted with our jobs and working in general. We are both ready but would like to get the house and car paid off first so we have more options. We plan to leave our expensive area for a lower-cost one...just not sure where yet. We talk about it all the time!!! I can't wait!!

Did you visit the "Retirement" forum here, as you were/are making plans?

Did you find some of the ideas helpful in the planning, or, now, in the execution, if I may thus refer to it?

Have you felt that enough resources were available, creditable and useful, during that exercise?

Our problem (in Ontario) is that it is a good time to get a mortgage but a bad time to retire. My husband who just turned 65 is going to work until he is 67 and I turn 65. I will not take CPP until I am 65 as I do not want to take the earlier age hit. He does not work for the government or a union job - so pension will be WAY less than he currently earns with minimal medical coverage. The company I worked for did not have a pension plan (trust me, a shocker if I said who they were). We do not have a mortgage but every time we turn around something else goes in the house - and then the car was written off after I was creamed this year (I was innocent) so needed to buy a new car. Life is not cheap in Ontario - and we have a DOG! It is all about the dog. Frankly neither of us wants to live to be 100. Heck I want to outlive our dog who could easily live another 9 years. We will not be travelling much etc. - it will be too expensive. And my husband does not have any hobbies, and hanging a curtain rod was/is a disaster. I am not much better, but I don't pretend to be.
