Have you ever had the experience of biting into a Pink Pearl apple? If not do yourself a favor and try it.
I was looking at apples in the grocery store, we love trying new types of apples, and came across this Pink Pearl. I thought it looked kind of like a granny smith since it had a greenish skin but there were little blushes of pink here and there on the skin.
So I picked up a few. WOW what a surprise when I bit in to the apple, first the flavor was right there sweet -tart- sweet- crispy puckery good! Then I looked down at the apple!! Second WOW
The flesh is the most beautiful shade of PINK! I couldn't believe it. I showed it to my husband and he was just as surprised.
They are not on the shelves for long so check your store for some now.
They would be fabulous in Christmas dishes with that pretty pinkish to reddish color.

This warms my heart....I studied pomology in college and my professor was a huge fan of a group of apples developed many years ago by Albert Etter, Pink Pearl being one of them. Most of the Etter varieties were grown on the university's research orchards, so I got to sample them regularly!

Pink Pearl really stood out for me! I'm thrilled that some of these older varieties are becoming truly marketable today. I'll be looking for PP in the stores.

Pink Pearl or other pink early bloomer

'coral bells' is one of the earliest to bloom in my area, if you think it is light enough in color for your site. (see link below for photo) it is supposed to be hardy to zone 6b and is very common in nurseries here. 'pink pearl' is one of my favorites and i have several. it blooms just at the end of the cycle for 'coral bells' and will be about at peak by the weekend. another beautiful pale pink is 'amy', which will be flowering in another week or so. the pics below are from mid-april a few years ago. incidentally, i don't see 'fashion' as a light pink. it is almost a light orange/pink or salmon color to me. Posted on a couple other topics that I dont like my pearly pinks. Anyone grow these that hasnt been impressed? or do they need something they are not getting? They are by far the most profilic producer, of anything, any veggie, in my garden, but the most bland tomato flavor ever. Just very disappointing, esp. since at least 60% of all my seedlings that made it through our awful spring, turned out to be PP's. Just curious what others who have grown this one think. Baker Creek has such a large variety to choose, you just pick and see what happens but I know I will never grow these again, and I hope they dont volunteer next year!! With my luck they will, I have yellow pears volunteering from last year, and they were the worst tomato ever!! When I grew yellow pears in PA, they were awesome, I guess the weather in Tn doesnt suit them, they were mealy, watery, no flavor, but yup!! they are coming back this year, uninvited!!

Thanks Leslie and Mark :) I take my pictures w/o using the flash because I dont like the glare, but I'm always focused on the flowers and I dont even notice what the rest of the plant looks like! I use a super bloom fertilizer, which I feed my plants every two weeks. My soil is a mix of cactus soil and pumice (2/3 cactus to 1/3 pumice)and it's extremely fast to dry out (especially since its been really hot out here lately), so I water every other day sometimes every day if my plants seem to need it. I also use Epsom salt once a month (one T. to one gallon water) to flush the soil and keep the leaves as healthy as possible. I bought these at Kroger and they had a bin full of them so I think they must have just got them in. They should have a picture of the inside of the apple so people can see it. Would probably sell some just for the wow factor.

Already trying to find them in my area. No luck so far, but we have a small vegetable and fruit market downtown, so I will check with him. Looks and sound delicious. We eat apples all the time. Thanks for the info.
