The scammers and phishers are busy!

I've received two such messages this morning....one with an offer to share ten million dollars (yippee) with Rev. Carlos, and a phish from 'Costco' about an order.

I'm just reminding you lovely people to never open any questionable email, ever. The good reverend even gave me a phone number to call his secretary, lol.

Has anyone else been the recipient of these kinds of fraudulent email?

I got the one for Costco. And, I really am waiting on a $50 rebate check I applied for online there but the wording of the email didn't jive for what I'd actually done. Deleted.

Several now about my Best Buy order - that they appreciate so much. Only I've never purchased anything from Best Buy that I can remember, or been in one of the stores.

And my airline tickets are waiting. I don't know where I'm going, I have no travel plans at this point....

I'm having to watch my inbox carefully the last few weeks, way more junk than I'm used to.

All the time. I never used to see them, as they went directly into my spam folder. But my new email serve quarantines them and sends me a list every morning. I have to go through it because invariably there's one or two good emails on the list. Otherwise it's a waste of time. Irritating.

Mine was, I was approached, practically accosted, on the way to my car after getting my morning coffee by a man who asked for money to "pay for his room at the Salvation Army". Huh?! From their site, so I think I was ok in saying, I'm sorry I can't do that today: "We strive our best to help men to stay at the Centre. We provide a free bed and a meal until a client is able to see a worker at the Ministry of Social Services. In most cases the Ministry of Social Services provides enough assistance for the client to obtain a job and later permanent accomodations. In extreme weather conditions we do not turn away anyone and we provide a free bed to anyone who is at risk of freezing. There are those that do panhandle and contact other agencies looking for cash to stay at the Centre but in the vast majority of times that isn't needed and they can be referred to us and we will be able to help them. Sadly some have panhandled and asked for cash in our names in the past and have used it for other purposes. If in doubt on what to do, feel free to give us a call."

Oh, gdogni. I tried to make this short, but it can't be said in a few sound bites. Who was doing the jobs before the illegals came? They were being done. Have we been quick to buy the idea that Americans don't want to do these jobs because we, ourselves, wouldn't want to do them? Americans have done jobs for many years I wouldn't want to have to do. I would do anything I could do, if necessary, but I do have my 'druthers. I wish you could have talked with the young woman I just spent time with the other day. She was almost in tears because she was pretty sure she was going to loose her jobs because the company had just brought in a new group of illegals. She commuted 60 miles - one way - to work on the assembly line of a chicken processing plant. I've been just in the office of a processing plant and my stomach lurched from the smell. It's a job I don't want to have to do - but others have for many years. She said, in a shakey voice, 'I've just got to have this job.' The shocking thing she told me is, if this company lays someone off, not fired for reason, but laid off because of slowdowns, etc., they will only rehire you one time. That means you can be rehired, but if laid off again (because a batch of illegals come in) you are no longer 'qualified' to work for that company. By way of their hiring practices, they are creating 'unqualified' workers in the area. People know to not apply for the job again. So when the news media goes to the spokesman for that company he/she can say things like 'we just can't find qualified workers', or 'we just haven't had any applicants' or the old stand by 'no one wants to do these kinds of jobs'. Neither they nor the media are going to tell you they fixed the situation. When you see jobs being filled by illegals - the only thing that means is they have the job. It means absolutely nothing else. We don't know how many others applied for the job, and didn't get it. One thing you have to realize is that in many areas, people are aware that only illegals will be hired, and they don't even apply. I saw illegals building the houses that got built in the frenzy of the last few years. Can we assume that Americans no longer wanted to do carpentry, dry walling, electrical,plumbing, bricklaying?? I don't think so. I know a lot who wanted the jobs. They are a bargain to employers because the employers have no responsibility. They don't have to comply with overtime laws, collect and match taxes, worry about OSHA regulations, workman's comp. If one gets hurt, they are taken to the hospital and the taxpayers pay for it. The media and the politicians are not giving out the true story on this. Now the reason I mentioned illegals was the fact they are working here. Americans already are competing with them for jobs, and if things get bad, it will be even more so. There is nothing wrong with mowing lawns and bussing tables, but that is not the only jobs they are doing. We will be hampered by the fact employers will have to work within the labor laws when hiring Americans, so given the choice, they will take illegals. The illegals are also getting benefits that are going to be needed for American families who loose their jobs. Again, just because Americans aren't doing the jobs, don't assume they won't or don't want to - now - but especially in the future.

Help her asap. Don't laugh, but I watch Dr. Phil, lol, and yes, it IS a scam and there's a name to it which I can't remember. It occurs on dating websites. I'm assuming your aunt has never met the man in person? She never will. What they do is download pictures they find on facebook and use them as their own pictures. They talk on the phone but can never be seen in person. They make up all sorts of stories as to why they need money. From being in an accident and insurance won't pay yet to all sorts of pity poor me excuses. They make the women feel beautiful with their oh so romantic words in email and on the phone. The men are from another country, like the Middle East, and they do this to many women at a time. Some women have lost their homes to them. Good luck!

Well your situation is rather unique, but in the terms of the warranty from manufacturer, the burden of proof still would fall on you. Homebuilders are not known for providing warranties / registering equipment --- there are a slew of home builder problems on this board. Some HVAC related, with many others completely different problems. I doubt the GC put it in his name because this would require work on his part, his name probably appeared there because he was the one who bought the machine from the manufacturer. Homebuilders 'typically' do not register the equipment, they are more interested in going off to the next build. They build, it's what they do. How do I know this? Because had he registered it in his name the warranty would be 10 years and not 5. If the equipment is not 'officially' registered there is no record of who 'owns' it, except of course who bought it. Equipment made these days have codes built in as to knowing the day and in some cases the hour in which the machine came off the assembly line. Without registration the manufacture allows up to 90 days beyond the date in which the machine came off the production line. So Mr./Mrs. home owner comes along buys a new home... wow everything is new, looks great. No worries everything is 'new'. You have a life so you don't concern yourself with things that 'could' go wrong. Like documentation of equipment warranties and things like that. As I said above, right - wrong or indifferent this is the way things work in this realm. (you don't have to like it, I didn't make up any of these rules -- I am not a homebuilder. I am the one who comes in and corrects homebuilder mistakes. I am not paid by the homebuilder -- I am paid by YOU. The homeowner.) It is up to you, the home owner to 'make sure' everything is to your liking. Including the name in which is on the contract specifying who owns the equipment at your home. Equipment warranties can be expensive for a manufacturer, there's paper work processing to validate that the warranty is credible or not, there's hacks out there that are claiming warranty when in fact there is nothing wrong. So because of all this nonsense that happened in the past has put us where we are now. I don't doubt that it took you time to sort this out. But in the eyes of the manufacturer they are standing there holding the tiniest violin in the world and playing 'Comb By Ah My Lord'.

Nothing today, but I've recently been informed several times that I can arrange to collect a package FedEx was unable to deliver by clicking ...yeah, right.

This morning's TV news had a segment about phishing using Costco and some other nationally known names. The presenter reminded people to check a sender's information if there is an outside chance that it might be a genuine email. (The address will prove the message didn't originate with Costco, Best Buy, whatever.)

I imagine the currently open sign-up window for Medicare Part D insurance will inspire some enterprising phisher. They might also guess that Seniors would bite on a 'Social Security information' message.

I've been getting the Costco one as well. It's a nice change from wanting to "increase me by 3 inches" LOL

There's a phone scam going around here. It's supposedly coming from our local Hydro company (electricity provider). They're saying that people's accounts are overdue and threaten them with their utilities being cut off unless they pay with a credit card.

I got a fake email from PayPal just last week. I forwarded it to spoof@paypal.com and they emailed me back, thanking me more than once for doing so.

I got a robo call this AM about the back brace ("as seen on TV"). I can assure you I did not place any order, but hung up on the call before punching any of the offered button selections to see what they wanted from me.

I hope I'm housed in a secure environment before I fall for any of this stuff.

I'd prefer to get that stuff, which I don't. Instead, I get stuff from "Ariana" and other women asking me to cheat on my wife. Um, I don't want to cheat, but even if I did, since I female and hetero, I'm really sure it'd never be with a woman. Ugh. That's the only spam I get. I cannot even imagine how that started?

I hear from Ariana quite often. And regularly get offers for "a good time."

And then there are regularly those offering to enlarge a part I don't have.

Also many "delivery instructions."

Thank goodness for the Spam folder.

kayjones, thank you for the tip on paypal. I had just received an e-mail from them today and they were trying to get me to log in from their link. What they said in the e-mail did not look legit so I forwarded it to spoof@paypal.com. They confirmed it as a phishing attempt right away.

The phishing e-mail came from a @e.paypal.ca address.

I rarely get them in my Tbird mail, but a few days ago I got one that was so stupidly funny that I wish I had saved it to show here in this thread. Can't remember it exactly now.

In my Yahoo mail I get scads of them in my SPAM folder. That address is the one on MY PAGE here.

You don't suppose they could . . no, not really!

I have them quite often. I had 2 that said they were from Microsoft and wanted to help me with my computer problem. My neighbor was called and warned me so I was ready for them. I said, but I don't have a computer, his reply was "why"?

The second call I told them I didn't have a PC, the silence was awesome.

I have gotten offers and requests for upwards of 100 million dollars (in several e-mails all from different folks) over the past week or so. I didn't know I was so popular LOL

I have gotten two from Fedex and I looked up an email address on Fedex's website and forwarded the "phishy" email to their abuse email address.

It's annoying, but I don't get things like that very often.

Who knows!! If I don't know the name of who sent it DELETE is my only response--sort of like phone answering. I don't if I don't know the name or number on my caller ID I don't answer.
