I made Flamey's penguins too!! My mom helped me and they were so cute. A big hit at my SIL's Christmas Eve gathering.

I copied your idea of having them on "ice" - definitely adds to the presentation. The blue water is sugar, and as you can see, some itty bitty fingers had their way with it. ;-) And I had to have a dead one because that was just way too cute. How unoriginal am I to copy so much, but you have the cutest ideas, Flamey!!!

I want to make these for New Years. Did you just mix blue food coloring in sugar?

Lisa, oh Lisa, darling where are you? sent you an e-mail. what nice present do you have for the groundhog. the neighborhood is infested with them this year. I'm worried about fungus on my toms again this year. At the rate the weather is going though, there may be more to worry about than that. Like nothing is going to grow cause the rain won't stop and temps won't warm up. Good job with your toms. A couple of my early plants have very small fruit, while others are still putting out their first blossoms. Like your White Swan Ech. After two years of trying, I finally got one WS seedling this year so I hope to have more in the coming years. They would go nicely with Jade. I know what you mean about Wsing and room. Last year, I ripped out a whole lot of things and made room for 'new arrivals' this year. I am also WSing perennials for my neighbour, who just bought the house two doors down and is trying to create a garden for his two kids. He is a single father and works, so I'm giving him a hand. I just love to grow plants - it's the miracle of seeing that little seed grow that gives me so much joy. Aren't we lucky!!

I know what you mean about staying away from the hosta forum when my hostas are still hiding. It usually just make me even more sad to see hostas up and about when I know mine are usually at least a month behind. No, I bought blue sugar sprinkles, like you'd decorate cupcakes with. I found them in the baking aisle.

I've got to try this for my NYE party. Is it really time intensive.? How long should I figure it will take?
The blue sugar is a good idea. What holds the bottom olive and the carrot feet, together? Cream cheese, as glue?

Mine was a throw together. About 1 hr. I think that was for 12-13 Penguins. I ate lots of mistakes, which is the best part.

I think I did about 40 of them. My mom helped me by cutting the carrots ahead of time (but we had to cut them again because they were too big). I'm not sure how long she spent but we spent probably 2 hours putting them together.

foggy, what I did was squirt the cream cheese in the big olive and set it on the foot carrot. Then place the smaller olive (with the beak already in) on top of the big olive, then poked a toothpick through the whole thing down into the foot carrot. Then when I placed them on the styrafoam, I pushed the toothpick down a bit further to hold them up.

My friends always kid me about how I try "to be Martha Stewart", or, how I "have too much time on my hands". They will get a kick out of this.
