That hair isn't bad. I remember Mrs. Obama with a similar hairdo once and it looked pretty.

I think Mrs. Obama could look pretty with almost anything. And when I was younger I might have been able to pull it off better. But this "style" is dragging my face down. And I agree with Sylvia about the weight on top. If I don't put some time and effort into it, my hair these days is flat on top and wide on the bottom: an unflattering pyramid.

My hair has really changed recently. It was the best hair ever when I was young, and even later brought a lot of compliments. But now it is suddenly stick-straight and getting thinner by the day. :-(

I just wish hairdresser's would cut hair the way you want. Anymore, I take the scissors in hand and trim away!! For the past 5 yrs. I have been the happiest with my hair and get compliments to boot! It is surprising how many people cut their own hair.

But alisande, you could make any haircut look good.

Last summer I started with a new hairdresser. She asked me if I would like to go a little shorter. I said yes. (Although now thin, my hair still grows quickly, so what the heck). She cut much shorter than I expected, but I really like it. Several people told me I looked younger and almost every one remarked on the difference. So I Say, go for it. Try something different.

A good hair stylist is worth her weight in gold. Case in point: an acquaintance of mine formerly wore her curly hair in a short bob which ended about mid-cheekbone. It was fairly flat on top and winged out towards the end. Very unflattering and served to only highlight her prominent nostrils.

At some point, her stylist talked her into a short layered cut that still worked with her curls. Instant transformation! The cut highlighted her eyes instead of her nostrils and she literally looked ten times more attractive.

Alisande, are you sure, it isn't just the low humidity of winter indoor air?

Mine is usually listless in the winter because of the dryness.

This year however I have been really good about running my humidifier and my hair is not flat.

I am another self cutter, and sometimes I do like it better than other times... but since I don't pay much/any, it's ok. It always grows out.

Oh just give it up Susan! We'll never be happy with our haircuts. If they manage to cut it in a style that looks good once they'll never repeat it.

On the other hand - look at how fabulous Sharon Stone looks. I think you could pull this off. Think of Jamie Lee Curtis too.

She does look good. This is the shortest I've ever had my hair (not counting the convent school, when the nuns cut my hair off and gave me a perm). It was taken three years ago.

As you say, Maire, they never repeat it. Twice I've had good cuts, but the second visit to the same stylist was a big disappointment. Once I brought photos with me--photos of me, not a celebrity--but it didn't do any good.

I do want to go shorter than what i have now, but I'll never pull a Jamie Lee Curtis.

Moni, good point about the humidity. I have wood heat, and it's dry as a bone in here.

That haircut looks great on you. Every now and then I'll ask my hairdresser to cut my hair a little shorter especially now that I'm in the pool several times a week for exercise. We obviously have different ideas of shorter. I swear she only takes off an extra 1/2 inch.

Good luck on your eternal quest! I have one too - for jeans that fit, are comfortable and slimming.

You (&I) can keep a kettle or saucepan on the stove burner to put humidity into the air.

I'm back to cutting my own hair also. I started off going to a hairdresser for a new look, but she cuts it the same everytime. She keeps cutting it shorter and shorter so I had to quit going. She'll have me bald soon. lol I kept telling her I like the shaggy look, but every time she's done I still have the bubble look.

For now I have a hairdresser that cuts my hair well....it is straight, blonde, fine, thinning and greying too...I need some layers and I've tried cutting it myself but it didn't work out too well. I now just trim the bangs and cut straight across the back until I get another haircut. I keep it short.

The hair stylists that we have used for a number of years, were starting to cut my hair far too short at the back for my liking. There's only "two weeks between a bad hair cut and a good one" (I've said that for years), but after a while, I got tired of them not really listening to what I wanted.

We've now been going to a new one, out of her home. I like the way she cuts my hair, but I keep asking her to cut the top shorter, and she won't, because she says it will "stick up". She doesn't believe me when I tell her that I always have had it stick up, then it grows out. She thins it at the top, at least.

I guess, next time I am lazy, I could take these with me... ;)

Good job, Moni, but if you take those pictures to a hair stylist, don't be surprised if you end up with something quite different. That's what happened to me the last time I took a picture of me and said, "This is what I want." It was not what I got.

I know, Susan, that is why I almost always end up doing it myself. At least, if I screw up, it doesn't cost me anything but time.

Moni - you do a great job on your hair! And it's not easy to do it yourself. SH does his own, but then he just uses clippers and buzzes it short.

After whining about my present hair style for so long, I had a good hair day the other day and decided to keep it for awhile. I guess all it takes is one good hair day. LOL
