Cold Weather and Arthritis

This winter my hips and lower spine feel tight and stiff and very painful. I'm walking with my hips held in tightly. Is it true that the cold makes arthritis worse or feel worse? If so I wonder what the reason would be, maybe the cold causes muscles to constrict? Next time I have a doctor's appointment I'll ask. But what do you all think and what helps? I'm seriously thinking of using the cane I bought from back when I broke a toe.

I take a capsule of turmeric and one of ginger, twice daily along with Ibpro. I think it helps me, so far :o) so good.

CAthy, I'm happy as long as the tank heater is keeping up, I HATE chopping ice from the tank. Actually, chopping it isn't the bad part, it's dipping the ice chunks out with a hay fork, I always get wet, and it's cold. Ugh. Hate that..... Wind chill factors of 20 to 30 below zero ought to tell me, I've made a wooden cover for the stock tank with a hole just big enough for the animals to put their heads through, I'm hoping it helps, at least enough to keep the tank unfrozen. We set a bale this afternoon, a big round bale will last 3-4 days, so hopefully it'll last until Wednesday morning, when it breaks a little and will be back up to a high of 17, and no below zero temps. I can do everything else manually, but the tractor doesn't always want to start when it's that cold and I need the tractor to move those big bales. As for school, they will probably not have school Monday or Tuesday, we have so many rural students that ride busses and it's just not safe to have small children out in that weather. When it hits zero they are not allowed to go outside for recess and when it's colder, they eventually give up and close school. Annie

I have Gerbing heated gloves for my motorcycle. I highly recommend investing in a regulator so you can adjust the temperature. The first time I wore them, we started out from home at 28 degrees. I could not regulate the heat so they were on HIGH all the time. I had to switch them off and on periodically but I received mild second degree burns on the knuckles of my hands (blistering). You can check with any motorcycle shop and see if they can't order the battery powered ones for you. I have mild Raynaud's and use my heated gloves when the temps go below 60. My hands and feet are perpetually cold from November through March.

I love Matelasse, I have several coverlets and bedspreads in various colors and prints of Matelasse. I will add a light weight fleece blanket in the winter. I don't like a lot of covers, I generally am not under the covers much. I will have the cleaning lady take the blanket off this week. Might change to a new pretty summery print Matelasse I bought but have never used yet. I currently have my favorite one which is raspberry color on the bed. I find one of those with the sheets is just right, I prefer a very cool room. The ceiling fan is on high all year, plus I have a 10" fan that is aimed at my head on all the time, we have a good size metal antique style fan on a stand that I have on a fair amount of time. I must have lots of air movement on me, my Dad was the same way. I feel like I can't breathe if I don't. I really think that we could have gone with out the blanket this winter since it never got very cold.

The trees are brilliant here. It had continued to be beautifully warm and dry until last week, when overnights dipped into the mid 40s (which I enjoyed despite watching my front lawn turn brown, and dreading the water bill from keeping my important yard plantings alive - we had less than 1/4" of rain all last month, 2-3 weeks without rain at the end of August too, and no significant rain until the cold front came through last Saturday.) Now with the typical end of October chilly and damp weather, it feels even colder than it did last week. I see the beautiful colors, feel the October weather, see all of the neighbors fall and Halloween decorations, look at the calendar to see it is mid-October - but deep inside I still seem to think it should be mid-August.

No fun, for sure. I find that, because I am cold, I tighten up the muscles in my upper back...shoulders. It is a constant struggle to make myself relax. Shoulder rolls help.

Cold, damp air bothers me...I have both OA and RA.
I always wear heavy socks/turtlenecks, and both a hat and heavy coat/jacket from fall to summer.

Meds keep me mobile and pain free.

I was just diagnosed with arthritis in my knees, although I didn't need an official diagnosis to know. When the cold, damp weather hit last month, they began to hurt....mainly the backs of my knees. It is supposedly a mild case, but sure did not feel mild at times. It really inhibited my activity to only being able to say, shop, for 1-2 hours tops. In the beginning I was icing them twice a day and using topical ointments...it helped some. Advil did not really help as usual, so I switched to Aleve and that has made a difference. I will see my doctor In January and we will explore a prescription med for arthritis then.

Changes in barometric pressure, dampness and cold seem to affect old bones and joints for a lot of us. Those "Ritis Brothers" are nasty guys. I look forward to summer and temps in the 80's.

I Googled cold weather/arthritis. It's not so much the cold as barometric pressure. Then Googled barometric pressure. I take Indomethacin and Tylenol. Can't take aspirin-like meds because of the Indomethacin. Lately my hip feels like it's splintering. At first it felt like grinding bone on bone. I thought 61 was too young for all this. The condroitin stuff-forget it-I was running ! FAST !

I fractured my hip in 1972; by the turn of the century, I was having lots of problem with that hip (in the old days, there were no replacements). Arthritis was the problem and finally (2005) I found a surgeon with empathy who wanted my money. Done. Feel great.

Now the fingers and shoulders are getting it. With my shoulders, sleeping is a BIG problem; with the fingers, it is painful to pick my nose!

And recently, I have become aware of arthritis in my right jaw. According to the ENT people, unfortunately, health insurance people don't like that and generally won't cover anything dealing with it. Crap. Pain when chewing or swallowing. Probably for the rest of my life (born 1946).

It has been cold since early November in central Illinois and I hurt all over. I sit on my hands whenever I can and have the heat turned up higher than I ever have in the past to no avail. I hate the idea of having to move due to weather as it affects me, but I am beginning to commence to think about that.

Definitely changes in barometric pressure. I've been taking Osteo Bi-Flex triple strength for quite a while now and it really helps. I took other brands before but this works the best and works faster. Tumeric is good, too. I sent a bottle of Oteo Bi-Flex to my daughter and she said it really helped her hands and other joints.
