I'm not a Southern Gal but I, too, have always seen the clapper right at the bottom, in the middle. That's where the cookie cutters have them.

Are you asking if there's a difference between those baked for Christmas{{gwi:807}} and those baked for weddings? Did you specify Southern gals because there's a Southern tradition of this? I guess I'm not really sure what your question is.

Don't understand what being Southern has to do with it, but the ones I've seen have the clapper at the bottom, in the middle, as others have stated.

I am not aware of a clapper difference- just a decoration difference!

A google search shows..clappers in the center, clappers on either the right or left, mostly left..or no clappers...looks like it just depends on what cutter you have. :)
Most wedding ones I found were double bells. With clappers to the left..

Here's the reason for my question:

MANY years ago DH and I attended the wedding of one of his fraternity brothers (a Yankee, like us) to a Southern gal in her hometown in South Carolina.

At a reception there were lots of home-made goodies. I was puzzled by seeing what looked to me like Christmas bells. One of the local ladies gave me a sweet Southerner-to-damn-Yankee, "Bless your heart," explaining that *these* are WEDDING BELLS. I was sure she said it had to do with the direction of the clapper. (She may have been teasing.)

I didn't mean to reignite the Civil War. LOL

Can't say that I ever heard that one. I'm thinking that a cookie becomes either a wedding bell or an Xmas bell depending upon the color of the icing, lol.

I'm from the Deep South (Mississippi) and I've never heard anything about the bells. However, I am very familiar with Laura's explanation in the post above. LOL Peace to all!

I am familiar with the definition referred to above. I was born and raised in the South, and never in my long life have I heard anyone use the expression "Bless her heart" in that way.

Most often it is used to compliment, or praise, someone who has worked hard and tirelessly to accomplish a hard task. "She has raised those 5 children by herself after her husband was killed in that explosion. Bless her heart."

It is actually a blessing, not a way to call someone an idiot. A true southern lady would never do that.

Oh, I *know* how the phrase is used! I'm just still wondering if I was fed a story about the differences between 'Christmas Bell Cookies' and 'Wedding Bell Cookies'.

Those cookies looked exactly like Christmas bells to me: A simple round shaped top. When I picture Wedding bells, I picture a pair of bells with more angular shapes, with a sort of bow at the top.

Correction: The wedding was in NORTH Carolina, outside Raleigh.
