Here Comes Our Snow

DH just checked the gutters near the sycamore in advance of the snow warning that is to begin this afternoon and run for 24 hours.

We're at 44F with rain now, but temperatures are to plunge with more rain, then ice, then snow and high winds. Perfect conditions for power outages and traffic accidents. The city may not have more than three inches, but immediately north of us in Wisconsin may get a foot. Some schools have already declared Friday a snow day.

We've had NO snow until this.

This is our first snow, also. About 10 inches.

We got about 10" a little over a week ago I think it was. Settled a lot. Doesn't look anywhere near what it looked like at first. Been a cold dry winter here so far. Nothing too unmanageable though. Pretty dry fall too so not much moisture in the ground which isn't good.

True_blue, 'John Davis' will bloom again on new wood, though the second "flush" generally isn't very significant. In order to climb, this rose NEEDS deeply dug fertile soil and feeding, otherwise you'll just end up with a shrub, but an attractive one at that. 'JD' can take zone 3 cold, but the biggest challenge is dealing with winter desiccation drying up the stems. Alberta (central Alberta included) will at times experience amazingly BALMY winter temps and the reflected heat from buildings will only further intensify and desiccate this rose. So, I water deeply prior to freeze up and attempt to lean 'JD' away from the house ... it's a challenge to get almost any rose to climb in our cold prairie climate. 'Olds Collage Rose' looks especially nice, thanks for posting vstapes :)

It was awfully weather since we gone to Indianapolis, IN (to cleaned up my mother's rental storage) last Thrusday and came back home again Last Sunday afternoon. It was cold and flurries all the times when we were there. I was expecting it would be nice sunny and warmer in Arkansas, but I was wrong. It was so cold and cloudy when we came home. It was sleet/snow last night. It is supposed be not nice weather this week! Boo Hoo.. When we will have a real Spring????

Tiger is right. Take the free money and get the better system. $1500 is just the from the Feds. Your state and/or local utility also will give you rebates, but you'll need to meet a minimum efficiency which your quotes do not achieve. If your cost delta goes from $2300 down to $400 that is a big difference. Your contractor is not being very helpful. I interviewed 8 contractors for my home and went with the the one that: a. did the load calcs b. worked with me and all my crazy thoughts on various system configurations c. was professional and responsive when it came to answering questions. d. made me and my wife feel comfortable with what they proposed. I did not go with the cheapest bid or the most expensive (although it was quite expensive). My costs were much higher due to a lot of duct work. Either way I can promise you that you will get what you pay for. Tigerdunes is steering you in the right direction. In the end it is up to you. I spent a month researching and interviewing contractors before making a decision. BTW I took an option for 12months 0% so I could actually get all my rebates and returns and spread out the cost at the same time. In my case I get the $1500+ 1200 more from my utility. There are also a lot of rebates for new systems. I know Carrier and Lennox have major rebates at this time for sure, but in general they are larger with the nicer systems. It never hurts to get a variety of quotes to weigh your system options (I had multiple quotes from the same contractors)

desertsteph - that was a really funny email LOL Is your friend still in Alaska? What part do they live in? I would love to visit one of those beautiful tropical islands featured in House Hunters Int'l shows, too. Such a departure from where I live now. I've also always dreamed of living on the east coast like Maine (where Jessica Fletcher's show was supposed to be set - Cabot Cove). We lived in CA from 2001 - 2004. Nine of those months was spent in Susanville, CA - actually Leitchfield (we called it Leech Field) :) I don't know how desert-y it is compared to where you live but I did not like it. I think it was also the circumstances. Just a few miles from a maximum security prison...hubby worked nights so every noise outside my window was an escaped convict ready to come get me ;) I had to do a 'spider hunt' every night before going to bed. They loved to congregate at the corners of the wall & ceiling...I guess they were having AA meetings (Arachnoid Anonymous) ;) Black Widows in my wood pile inside. That was fun. Had to heat entirely by wood. No dryer - thank goodness for a washer! My living room became my 'dryer'. I was so happy when we moved back to Sacramento. But, even happier when we came back to Alaska. I had been here since 1972 so I consider it 'home' but I have second thoughts on days like today. Come summer...and all this will be a distant memory...Alaska's siren call to woo us into staying put - then, BAM! Winter pushes Summer away & bullies us for 5 months! I didn't take the photo below but it shows the mountains in town...this was an outrageously beautiful day! It's days like this that make us forget what winter can do. :)

It's been cold and raining all day today. Dark sky...snow supposed to start tonight. Not looking forward to it because I have to work in the morning. It wouldn't be so bad if it were just me on the road...but there are always idiots who insist on driving 90 mph on ice.

We've had 3-4 inches over the last couple of days. Here on the west coast we don;t do snow very well. Actually we prefer not to do it at all. It's raining now so hopefully I'll have my green grass back by Sunday.

I know they had at least of foot of snow in Madison, cancelled finals today. We are in the far north and have about 5 inches, but temp is now plummeting and wind is picking up.

There goes our snow...

Big whoop! We have a dusting. That storm whipped by us so fast there wasn't time for it to leave anything. We heard the wind last night, but had no damage and no electrical outages. Goodie! Mid-20's today.

I spent 2 hours digging out two cars in my driveway, and clearing the drive and sidewalk. The stuff stuck to the shovel - nasty. Luckily, the snow blower was able to move the snow without plugging. The water content is high. The snow plow gift on the sidewalk was not welcomed.

The doors on one car was welded shut by ice.

Gosh, I hate that you all have to drive in that stuff. Hope the sun comes out an melts it all away before your family/friends come for Christmas. Or if you have to go out and go to them.

Chisue, really hoping that snow is gone by Tuesday morning. DSis#1 and DBIL are flying out to Milwaukee and driving to Gurnee, IL that morning for Christmas with their kids. They live in NW IN in the summer and here in winter. Don't know why they don't just have the kids all come here!

Please be careful everyone--especially if you're out shoveling. Very hard on us as we get a little older.
