Just finished decorating the Christmas tree with my nephews. Hadn't seen them in 6 one half years... darn it, can not find some of the keys on this keyboard...

Anyway, heading back to my sisters tomorrow. So far, it has been GREAT. Even got snow. LOL
Hoping all my KT friends are doing fine... and see you soon.

Thank you all for the warm welcome! As I am an Amercan in Ireland, so some of my pre-Ireland gardening knowledge doesn't apply. I am learning as I go. For instance, instinct told me to mulch my roses but that is completely unnecesary here. The climate here is mild, however I live on a mountain (this mountain is a hill compared to the appalachians - near I grew up). My property is built on a blanket bog - rich clay that is crazy waterlogged. The roses I have thrive because of the humidity (just enough to keep them happy but not so much as to encourage black spot) and because they receive 10 - 12 hours of sun in summer. In the seven years I've lived here there have been only 2 snowy winters. 2012 has been unusually wet and cloudy. Many desease resistant roses struggled with black spot and rust. However, my smaller roses (Joie De Vivre, Top Marks, and Sweet Magic) were exceptional this year. Most of my roses are in containers. I keep compost worms in the pots and I feed them on a budget - coffee, bananas, etc. I made my first, large, hot compost heap this year. I hope to top dress my roses in spring. I am not a rose snob - I found a generic standard rose on clearance today. The roses were absolutely gorgeous so it came home with me to add to my copper/apricot collection. I mulch my entire garden with grass clippings, including raised beds gulls of veggies, herbs and flowers, and garden pathways as welI. I even mulch plants in containers with grass clippings. We use not only the Bermuda grass clippings but also the grass clippings from a couple of acres of fallow pastures that are a mix of native grasses and wildflowers. The clippings do not give us any more weeds than we'd have anyway from weed and grass seeds washing into those areas when it rains or blowing in every time the wind blows. My clippings decompose and feed the soil and the plants. If you are worried about Bermuda grass seed, just be sure you mow before the grass forms seed heads. (In rainy years, it can be hard to do that.) I put down landscape cloth in the pathways so nothing can sprout there from the clippings. In garden beds I put down cardboard or multiple layers of newspaper and pile clippings on top some years, and use clippings with nothing underneath them in other years. It just depends on how busy I am. The Bermuda grass that drives me crazy is the stuff growing outside the garden that perpetually tries to grow through the fence and sneak into the garden. The grass clippings are no problem. If you are pulling up long Bermuda grass runners, those are not the same as clippings and I wouldn't mulch with them because they will root and grow. Dawn

If you are buying a lot of furniture, you really should go to North Carolina (Hickory and High Point especially). The furniture stores are vast, and the prices much better than most places you will see in the US. If you time a trip for after market, many of the stores will be having sales. If there are particular lines you like, you should get on the mailing list--they'll let you know when they are having specials. I lived in NC for several years and I ended up furnishing about 8 homes (mine, family members, and friends) exclusively from deals picked up in the clearance centers. And of course, don't forget your local 'Craig's List' for used furniture--that can be the best deal of all. It helps if you've looked at tons of furniture, because then you can spot quality, you know makers you like, and you know not to believe everything the previous owner tells you. Virtually everything advertised on Craig's List is called 'solid wood' and about 10% of it is. I love a beautiful veneer, but that's more rare than the solid wood. I have some wonderful second-hand furniture, and you might want to consider going that route too. Good luck, and happy shopping. And when you do, make sure you check out your shipper--movingscam.com is a good forum to find out companies to use and avoid. (Yes, I have been through the nightmare international move--it turned a $15,000 move into a $50,000, be sure to start researching that NOW. But double verify everything, before they start loading, licenses, permits, etc.) What was a good company, can turn into something awful very quickly.
