This is Peeka's story.

Last week I adopted a cat off CL. He's neutered and declawed. The story I got was: the woman(Her names Marilyn) feeds strays and Peeka arrived with a Maincoon. She posted ads and no one claimed him. Her son adopted him and he was fine for a year until his fiance moved in with her pets and children. Peeka freaked out and was put in the garage to live. Marilyn found Peeka in the garage, months later, all by himself and brought him back home to live with her, but he didn't get along with her cats, so she kept him in a rabbit cage to seperate the felines and put him up for adoption on CL.

He started out not eating and hiding under the bed. That was last week. He's progressed to eating "anything" dry or wet food. He was afraid to come upstairs, but now comes out at night on his own.

He loves to be petted, brushed even loves a belly rub. He purrs all night in our ears as he waits for us to wake up and give him more attention. Once it's light out, he retires to his safe place, under the bed downstairs, in our spare bedroom.

He's such a GOOD kitty! We adore him and he's becoming more adventurous every day......as an only pet in our home. :0)

Hi linnea, I've not had your specific problem, but I do notice there is a PEST & DISEASES forum here on the gardenweb, if you've got the time to check it out there, there will be ideas for all sorts of pests besides bugs, like deer, burrowing animals and such. One poster said dried blood (I think she may have been talking blood meal?) worked, and another used the neighbors' dog hair. Another was to dump human urine at the entrance to their burrow, if you know where that is. Good Luck! Why must bunnies be so cute? WOW!!! That's fantastic looking!!! Way to go Randy and Amber!!! I just got done ordering another 65 gallon reptarium but have been thinking about making smaller cages myself for different instars and species. Something about 16 inches on each side. I had so many different cats inside as 22 gallon reptarium that one of the American Ladies decided to pupate on top of a Black Swallowtail chrysalis :o) Have no idea how the BST emerged but the AL was still attached to the spent chrysalis. I do like your cage Randy. Now I just have to get off my duff and make some too. I still use all my plastic gladware containers, rubbermaid bins etc. but mainly keep a stash of them in the truck...that way when I'm out at the ranch or on the road and find a caterpillar I can transport it home safely. I raise rabbits in 2x6 ft rabbit hutches. They are made with 2x4s and hardware cloth. They have plywood roofs covered with roll roofing. Make sure to cover your wood frame on the inside with hardware cloth because they can chew through the wood. I also leave hardware cloth on the bottom for the poop to fall through. It keeps the cages cleaner and wood bottoms will just rot here in FL. The bunnies develop callused feet and I haven't seen any injury from the hardware cloth on their feet. Some people just hang cages but I need something really sturdy here due to raccoons, possum, neighbor dogs, fox, etc. Plus the hutches are about a half acre back from the house. The hutches are underneath a carport overhang and a huge oak provides further shade over the carport area. There are vermicompost bins underneath the hutches. The bins are made from treated wood but you could use redwood instead. The shade is really important for rabbits because they can really overheat here in FL during the summer. They love cold weather. I provide them with 2 liter bottles filled with frozen water in the summers for them to lie next to in order to cool off when the temps get really hot (upper 90's F). I don't raise mine for meat so I have cute semi dwarf rabbits that are part lionhead and/or pure lionhead. Dwarfs seem to make just as much manure as the big ones lol. My plants really love the manure. You can put straight rabbit manure on the plants or wait and vermicompost. I do both. It won't burn your plants at all. I really get good blooming on my plants here. agree.. when you think about it.. breeding wildlife under your deck can lead to all kinds of problems ... think rabies in a worse case scenario ... and maybe even worse.. is the smell if something dies naturally under there ... and i suppose.. the easy answer is.. is keep your cats in the house ... ken

Poor kitty stuck in a small cage. I'm so glad you rescued him. Certainly cats have had more miserable lives than his, nevertheless, it wasn't good. He's living the good life now and will become more and more comfortable over the weeks and months ahead. Have fun with that purr-ball!

Is he all black with a little white?

socks12345.......he has a tiny dot of white on his chest, about the size of your pinky fingernail and another dot on his belly. Other than that "The pretty Peeka boy".....as I've been calling him....is a pure black fluff ball. :0)

I am so glad you adopted this kitty, he is beautiful!
I adopted a kitty that was born on my daughter's roof. Molly was one of a litter of 3, my daughter adopted out the 2 boys to a friend. She had the mother, who is feral, fixed. So, there will be no more stray feral kitties in her neighborhood.
Every cat we have ever had has been a rescue of some sort. It's always great when you can save a life!

That gorgeous kitty has, indeed, hit the jackpot. I know you will get as much love from him as you give to him. Yes, you will wonder how you ever went this long without him!!

I have a cat like that. It took her a good two years to fully realize, I wasn't going to do to her what had been done to her and she wasn't going anyplace else. She did finally quit skidding across the floor (dang, it was so entertaining) when I opened the bag of food a couple of months after living with me. Made me wonder what dinner time was like at her last home! She was big enough though, she probably knocked down whatever was in her way like a bowling ball running into pins.

And she'd lived on the street so long before that, she shied away from everyone who came to visit. She'll finally come out for everyone now. It takes time, but be patient and consistent and Peeka will get it. Don't take any odd behavior personally though (speaking from MY experience, not yours), as it does take time to shed those bad habits.

Yep, that's what I am talking about! I love looney cats that get a loving home. My little ol' looney is much better now. Poor things that they've been through what they have, but yay! they're getting the right stuff now.
