I phoned my cousin Dianne to wish her happy holidays and got bad news- her mother Joyce is in the rehab hospital (yet again). She fell at home, hit her head and lost 3 pints of blood. She's now got dementia and needs tons of physical therapy. She hates the rehab place and will only do her physical therapy if one of her daughters is present.The rehab hospital plans to send Joyce home next Thursday, with the proviso someone will stay with her at all times (Joyce is a widow). Looks like Dianne will be moving in with her Mom- maybe just as well since Dianne can't find a job at age 63 after years and years of work as a secretary/administrative assistant/ computer entry person. And my other cousin, Joyce's sister Judy has been diagnosed with breast cancer. It's so far advanced the docs aren't even treating her. They offered chemo, radiation and surgery but she just wants to die at home. I'm so sad thinking about this branch of my family. Joyce has been a second mother to me. To top it off, her 83rd birthday is Christmas Day!

I'm so sorry for all this heartbreak in your family, Jannie. I do hope Joyce can get lots of help caring for her mother and sister, because that sounds like an enormous job. Perhaps you can contact a social worker or ombudsman for her? I'll keep them in my prayers.

Update: Spoke with HR today regarding the circumstances. They allowed me the opportunity to write a letter or resignation to erase the termination. While this will keep me from qualifying for unemployment, it should make getting a job much easier down the road. I had to decide which option was better for my family and, while unemployment would have been nice in the short-term, the long-term choice was resigning. Weird situation nonetheless. They're also going to extend my insurance coverage an extra month and not charge me, which I also thought was unusual. It sounds like they know they messed up and they're trying to make it right. Too bad they can't just rehire me ha ha. As far as that goes, I've already had several hits on the job search so we'll see how that continues to go.

Thank all of you for your prayers.The Prayer Warriors came through again. His doctor said that everything went really well. They were able to fix the tear, remove the arthritis and bone spurs. If he does his therapy he should be golfing soon. And I know that he will be doing that therapy. I am sorry to say that my brother did not make it. He died just before Easter. I am the only one left of my family. My Mom,Dad,two brothers and sister have gone home. It has been a really hard year, but we take it a day at a time. It is good to have friends here and at the KT.

There is a lot of bantering on the RE forums about the best way to protect yourself, and it's quite interesting but IMHO, not very realistic. For many, they believe the answer is carrying a gun (legally, etc) but it's not like you're going to be holding your loaded weapon in your hand while you walk through someone else's house. If it's in your handbag or on your body, I just think it's highly unlikely that you're going to be able to get it out in time to protect yourself against an assailant in a house. Think about how you show a house - narrow hallways, chokepoints at doorways, stairwells, basements. (And as a seller, don't even think about sending strange buyer into my house unaccompanied!) It really wouldn't be too difficult to look away for a moment to find a light switch or look down at a step and WHACK! - you're down, arms held behind you, or in a chokehold and your gun is where? Your keys with emergency alarm? (not that anybody pays attention to a car alarm going off) Your emergency button on that cell phone app? Can you reach your Cuff or Artemis (jewelry with emergency buttons)? Is anybody going to find you in time using any of those alert services? I strongly believe, although it's more paranoid than I care to normally live my life, that the best precautions are taken in advance. I've decided that a buyer who won't take the time to meet me in my office or in a public spot first, and let me copy their ID doesn't get my time to see a house. (Not the best example, but just to make the point.) I don't think we know what Ms. Carter did or didn't do, but we will all learn a lesson from her tragedy.

Prayers on the way and I do hope Dianne will contact the elder associations/social workers at the hospital for additional help. Could she go into a memory care unit? We have an excellent one here in ND. Many times people with dementia develop anger issues. Tell Dianne to contact the Alzheimer's association ASAP. They have some wonderful and trained people to help out with many things. They have presented programs to the people here at the assisted living complex and I have been amazed to see all the help available free. Also make sure all the legal stuff is done=wills, bank accounts, health care proxy, power of attorneys etc.
