New Year's Day Dinner Menu

Currently, this is our menu for New Year's Day. I think it is finalized. Have additions to the menu. Made Glenda's Pineapple Pickles (can hardly wait to try them tomorrow) and will be making a spice cake with no frosting, but will have warm spiced applesauce to serve with it.

We don't plan a New Years Day meal.

We party at a friends for New Years Eve....lots of munchies..I bring several fun varieties of cupcakes.

We are slow to get moving on New Years Day..lol...

I am sure there will be other things added. Some times for New Years we either go back to Amber and Mike's for lunch or we go for a breakfast.

When you say "rich tomato basil soup" do you mean rich with cream? or only with flavor? How about roasted veggies...red and green peppers, chunks of sweet onion maybe chunks of eggplant maybe zucchini, and a few asparagus spears for good measure..slices of baby bella 'shrooms...toss with EVOO, some Kosher salt...a bit of garlic ( if there is not a lot in other dishes) a bit of sugar, balsamic...and oregano...or parsley or rosemary or any herb that blows your dress up. How about a side of mushroom risotto....? Oven roasted potatoes are always wonderful.....and can go into the oven before the meat. If your soup is broth based....how about that spinach dish ( the name escapes me!!) spinach, cream, lots of fresh grated parm....bread crumbs and baked...has a woman's name!! AARGH it's hell to get old! Peas in a little butter, oregano tarragon sauce....thickened just a tiny bit with corn starch....neeed a recipe....give a shout. What are you saucing the beef with?....could I suggest a blue cheese/walnut sherry sauce?? Linda C

It's just food, food, food all day! For breakfast, we always have an egg and sausage casserole, a jazzed up hashbrown casserole, ham biscuits and garlic cheese grits (with jalapenos -- Yum!) Fruit will be something very simple like cantaloupe wedges or fresh pineapple. I may or may not get around to making muffins or French toast fingers since sweets aren't a high priority with my crew, particularly early in the day. As some leave to go to 'the other' family's house, and others wander in for the first time, we sort of gradually segue into the brunch phase. I'll add their favorite Cajun crab spread with toasted garlic rounds and a dip or two to the buffet. Once the biscuits are gone, we'll bake some rolls for the ham. I make a super-spicy mustard sauce that my children adore and an herb-flavored mayonnaise so everybody can put together mini-sandwiches. There's always some sort of seafood -- usually poached shrimp with cocktail sauce since it's so easy to do ahead -- and a couple of salads (broccoli and pasta are the faves). Oh, and Bloody Marys to help the cook forget how bad her feet are hurting at this point... By the time everybody who had to leave has returned and we've all worked up a little bit of an appetite again, it's usually 7:30 or so. Our dinner menu varies a little, but this year we'll have Boston Clam Chowder as a starter. (Gift from a dear friend who feels sooo sorry for her poor, deprived Southern pal who didn't grow up eating this. lol) Spinach salad with poppy seed dressing. Beef tenderloin, if I can afford it. If many extras are going to turn up, it will be prime rib instead. A green vegetable TBD, and a potato gratin. Dessert will be Italian cheesecake with a strawberry/Grand Marnier topping -- not that anybody will have room for it, but you have to have one, right?

Sauerbraten, red cabbage w/apples & onions, mashed potatoes w/gravy from the sauerbraten, fresh green beans w/bacon, & Dutch apple pie for dessert. Dinner will be later this evening so about 1:00 p.m. I'm putting out appetizers of crispy mini-lobster tacos w/fresh salsa & a fresh fruit/cheese platter. I wouldn't normally do the lobsta w/sauerbraten later but our guests expect some form of lobsta when coming to New England. /tricia

New Year's Eve if we are still awake we will wish each other Happy New Year. If we are asleep we will wake up as usual the next morning and wish each other Happy New Year. There will be fireworks in the neighborhood so most likely I will be snuggling with the dogs and holding Buddy in my lap. He is the one who is most afraid of the fireworks. For our New Years meal we will have hopping john, cornbread, turnip greens and whatever else anyone wants. Those three are must haves. Linda

New Years Day is always prime rib for us, au jus, baked potato, salad or vegetable. I don't invite anyone, plan it just for the two of us, but if someone stops by that's OK too.

We keep New Year's Eve quiet the last few years, the bigger parties don't appeal to me any more - we rarely stay up to ring in the new year:)

We went to the same party year after year, now looking back I can't think why. Lots of our friends always there, at a private club, there would be music, dancing, lots of drinks and only nuts, chips for food. No other food with all those drinks, and somehow it became fight night, someone in our group always had a major end of year blowout, not always the same couple. Probably tired, stress, too much alcohol - it stopped being fun and we stopped going. I understand they've added a buffet in recent years, we still don't go.

Our New Year's Eve is always just our kids and family. We do not drink alcohol so we never have it at our suppers. No one stays till midnight. We will probably play with Play Doh at this party!

I work New Year's day but New Year's Eve I have a couple crabs for me and Lauren. Unless she makes plans with her friends.

New Years Morning Brunch starts with a bottle of Champagne. Add whatever else might be lurking in the fridge.

May go to a steak/shrimp/fish cookout with son in law and two friends. DD is baby sitting my 4 great grands and one GDis working at the cookout. Without DH this year, not much meaning, may watch parade and DD may cook something. Nothing special planned.

Our family's traditional meal: corned beef and cabbage (cooked with potatoes and carrots), black-eyed peas, turnip greens, cornbread.

We have never been into the party thing. I may make a cheese ball this year as it sounds good and haven't done one in a long time. It will just be DH and I so very quiet. We always stay up until midnight so nothing new there. We never used to but our life style has changed with old age. LOL

This year we will have lamb, steamed rice, curry sauce, a vegetable and rolls for dinner. I have pralines that I made before Christmas that will be dessert. Again it will probably be just the two of us.
