Microwave Question: Bowl Gets Too Hot!

I cook old fashioned oatmeal in the microwave several times per week. But the bowl I'm using gets so ridiculously hot it is dangerous to remove. It is a medium sized ironstone mixcing bowl with sides big enough to keep the oatmeal from boiling over. I would like to buy a bowl for this purpose that doesn't get so hot and that I can eat from directly. The cereal bowls in my ironstone collection, however, are too small-sided. Any suggestions?

Glass. My regular dishes also get hot in the microwave and I have a small set of glass dishes & bowls that work great in there.

If you have bowls or dishes that get hot in the microwave (hotter than the food does), then they should NOT be used in it. The test for whether a container is safe to use is this--put water in the container, microwave it 60-90 seconds. If the water is warm and the bowl is relatively cool, the container is safe. If the container is hot, and the water isn't--then you shouldn't use that in your microwave--it's made of material that shouldn't go into the microwave.

For microwaving food in the container it will be eaten in, I like ArcoRoc bowls and dishes. They're not only microwave safe, they're the most hearty dishes/plates/bowls I've ever owned. I've added to my set over the years (my local bar/restaurant supply store sells them by the piece), but the ones I got as wedding presents over 37 years ago are still in fine shape, and we use them every day of the week, many times a day. Not one single piece has ever broken or cracked.

Otherwise, why not microwave your cereal in a pyrex measuring cup and then just transfer to your bowl until you find something that you can use safely in the microwave?

thanks all. ML, well, I'm kinda all over the place.... I started ws'ing properly, just sowed them and let them be in a spot that gets partial sun... but then I had horrible weather that threatened to wash everything away... I don't have a garage or shed to put anything in for protection, and I tried a tarp, but the weight of the water just started smashing everything down and cracking my covers (my 200lb grill got blown over and smashed a lot of my containers too! the weather was horrendous!), so I got two little pop up green houses and set them in there just when the weather is nasty. Then, a week later, things started germinating, but we're still having hard frosts at night, and I'm concerned about the little tender greenies, so I started leaving all the flats inside the tents for the evenings, letting them rough it during the days. So technically, I guess I'm doing half & half, though I'm not relying on the tents as a heating element, just protection overnight. I'm hoping its enough to keep a frost off... We had a hard frost the other day, my new containers of carrots & lettuces froze solid, but the 'maters seemed to make it. Because some of the plants are really starting to go at it, I naturally thought they'd want sun to help them along... I mean, plants like sun, I thought... But then I read here that people are only allowing their plants a few hours a day of sunlight... I was curious why, and I'm learning that its to keep them from going crazy I guess and growing too fast before its time to plant out... correct me if I'm wrong? I assuming if I did encourage them along I'd end up with 'leggy' seedlings? So hence my confusion... I really have no clue how to tend to a pant, I've only gardened once before and that was about 24 'home depot' pre started tomato plants last year... this year, I'm trying to do everything from seed, and I'm in a bit over my head. Fortunately, I prepared my beds properly in fall, so at least I have that going for me... but I'm not sure how to tend to the little ones during this crucial time. I naturally want to stick everything in the sun and let it go go go... its really thrilling to see things popping up from the dirt! but then again, I've planted some crops waaaay to early it seems and I might end up killing them with love! lol! My boyfriend yelled at me last night when I told him cantaloupe is coming up... he said, yeah, like two months too early!! lol! Its the tomatoes I'm most concerned with ... I want the varieties I sowed, not the home depot hybrids this year.. I definitely put all my eggs into one basket and the suspense is driving me nuts! lol!

Well, along the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua (where I am) there is a rainy and dry season. During the dry season, there are 6 months of NO RAIN at all. As you can imagine, high temperatues, a direct sun angle and srtong winds take a toll on bananas. Most of the "wild" bananas are totally fried by this time of year, they literally dry up. The dewpoint is usually around 60 here, even in the dry season, but still, if there is no natural rain, the banana plants tend to suffer. I have been giving them good waterings and I cut them off and now some tiny pups are comming up. I left all of the orignal stalk and leaves as muulch so there is shade for the ground and nutrients to break down. They also keep the soil moist and cooler. I can tell you that here the temperatures reach 100 daily and the plants keep growing as long as they get watered. Remember that it may hit 100 for a couple of hours, but then it cools off. I get the feeling though that the cement wall makes it worse, plus the bananas went several months witouth watering due to a water shortage, so they are recovering slowly. If I get an established grove, that is more sustainable and they are happier in clumps, which is my ultimate goal. But boy they sure so need a ton of water...

thanks jakvis for the info. since my granite has not been installed yet- last evening i disassembled my cupboard from the wall that is beside my range, went out and purchased an infrared point and shoot thermometer -- the temp on the exterior sides ranged from 145 degrees to 240 degrees farenheit which is way hot. i can not imagine that being good for the custom painted cabinetry installed beside the range- the temperature on the outside of the wood cabinetry was extremely hot also- the inside of the cabinet was ok, however towards the exterior of the front side of the range was the highest heat and that's where the custom drawer-fronts are. i even had heatshields applied to the cabinetry but they are pretty useless since they are just 1 inch metal strips that also got extremely hot. ugh, i'm hoping someone knows of a way to rectify this problem. thanks again for all the help.

what the heck are you talking about? 1) I think you may wind up killing or injuring someone by meddling with your fireplace. I bought a logset specifically designed to be unvented, ie the flu MAY remain closed. I am aware of the potential moisture issues. The smell issue supposedly is from new paint or carpet or glade plug ins combusting as the fp draws air from in the room. Its not propane we are smelling. The logset I bought also says you may open the flu slightly or all they way if desired. Doing so leaves you with a nice looking fire and all your heat going up the chimeny...but the pretty fire is what we actually bought the unit for---if it did not smell we'd likely use it more for heat. For now its a heater only when it extremely cold outside. 2) You are violating several safety warnings about operating unvented equipment. It is generally NOT permitted to use it for heating purposes, NOT permitted to operate unvented equipment that has an odor. I bought the logset from a dealer who installed and a propane tank. Why would they sell a logset that does not need to be vented to the outside if not for heating purposes? I doubt they could sell something illegal and get away it for years and years the dealer has been in business. We understood the potential odor issue going in. They said there would likely be no odor but I knew better. Still it seamed more economical to try this type rather than the vented type that has a little nicer fire, uses more gas but NEVER gives off any heat to the home as your flu is bolted open year round. 3) Combine this by restricting combustion air to the fireplace with your glass doors and you could have designed a real killer. I am not even sure what this means...please elaborate? We have an open floor plan....the fp is not in a small room with a door. The door are open when the fire is on. They are closed when only the pilot is on. BTW, we turn the pilot off April thru Novemebr. 4)Frankly, you don't have a clue about operating the equipment you have and obviously have never read or don't bother to follow the warnings that come with unvented equipment. What are the rules I am not following? Perhaps I did make it clear that we are aware the doors should remain OPEN when the fire is turned on. The screen doors remain closed. 5)You should remove this equipment for safety, because no reasonable person would trust you to operate it properly. So after reading up on these types of logsets (sure a $4K insert would have been better), posting questions here, seeing them inoperation and having a dealer install and train us on its use...I know nothing? PLEASE EDUCATE ME! Hey I am big enough to leave open the possibilty that I misunderstood a monumental amount of stuff. Are you big enough to admit that maybe you are having a bad day? Again, Our old door set also got very hot with gas log set too. It was made of a thinner material and was warped a bit at the bootom from the previous owner brning wood. I assume it got hot for him too. So, I bought a door set specifically for a masonry fp, called the vendor who said it should be fine as long as the logset was in a masonry fireplace but was looking for some reassurance that the thing won't warp or paint peel. This set is a much heavier metal than the last but they alway say they do not make 'em like they used too. If I am misunderstanding something, please advise. Now if you are telling me the doorset is NOT suppose to get hot to the touch whether a wood fire is burning or a gas fire...then I want to know that too.

If they get too hot, they may not be "microwave safe."
Pyrex or something similar is microwaveable.

ironstone contains metal bits in the mix which is why it is not microwave friendly.

Use pyrex or corning ware, or corelle, things that specifically say microwave safe.

Porcelain bowls and dishes also work well. Ironstone does not.

Azzalea, I had a set of ArcoRoc glasses. I loved the way they held up until they started breaking - into chunks without any shards at all, no sharp edges. Very easy to sweep up. They practically bounced when dropped on the floor and didn't break! However, as they aged, they started breaking almost spontaneously. I poured warm milk in one sitting on the counter and it burst into a hundred chunks. Another one broke in the kitchen sink when it was in my hand while I was washing it under running water. It simply burst, like the first one did.

The glasses were at least 15 years old and had been dropped, soaked, banged and what-have-you (I have six kids!) and nothing happened to them - until it started happening and they started breaking. I threw away most of them (I still have one that I use to root plants in) because I couldn't trust them any more. And I didn't have a dishwasher or a microwave in those years, so it wasn't that.

I'm glad you're having such good luck. I hope it keeps up!

I cook my oats in a correlle soup size bowl every morning. But first I pour boiling water (also make hot tea) over the oats & let it set for 10-15 minutes, then micro it. That way it doesn't boil over in the micro. I let it set several minutes after cooking also, before I eat it from the same bowl. I am retired so there is no "morning rush" for me, but if I were working I would probably start my oats-thing before starting the rest of my morning routine.

I bought Rubbermaid microwave cookware and it's great. Problem is I can't find it anymore and occasionally they will break when dropped. Found some at a garage sale and grabbed it when I could. Pyrex is great too. Check Corning, I'm not sure if all is compatible anymore. It's not the Corning of years ago.

That the item heats in the microwave does not necessarily mean it's not safe. That's how the browning grills work. They heat up to sear meats and such.
