Question about Tipping

Not sure what to do. Our kitchen floor was ruined several years ago when our dishwasher flooded. It was linoleum and really "buckled" from the flood. So this year, we're spending our Christmas money on a new vinyl floor from Sears. The installers are coming today. Since we are paying Sears plenty, we know these guys are a contract company, they'll get paid. But should I also give them a tip? If so, how much? I'm thinking no tip or maybe $20 per person. What do you do in this situation?

If they come out and just do their job, I see no reason to tip people who are making a decent wage--I'll generally supply drinks and have a freshly baked pan of brownies or cookies available.

If, on the other hand, you expect more than normal--you have a lot of heavy furniture and expect them to move it, maybe an island that has to be moved? or the damage floor has deteriorated to the point where it's pretty offensive to work with? Then, yes, I'd give them something extra.

I have a friend who sold stems of Johnson Grass at the Farmer's Market in her cut flowers. She ran out of blooms in her garden so she picked wild flowers and grasses. LOL. There is always someone willing to buy anything. You could probably get 50 cents a piece for those.

I find in the long run you kind of get what you pay for with those cheaper hair places (and I don't mean just with skill, but with attitude, and professionalism). They tend to go a lot quicker too. That said, I've noticed the good stylists often move on to other salons rather quickly. The one you like may not be there forever, or even next month. Or, she may be inconsistant and not remember how she cut your hair last time. Glad you had a nice experience and, I think $4 is perfect amount if you are happy with your cut. I don't think you need to go over board with tipping. A $20 tip at a steak house is one thing, but there's no need to tip $20 for the chili at Steak 'N Shake no matter how much you like it or how nice your server is. You don't have to pay this new girl $50 just because that's how much you paid you last stylist. It's a different set up and a different place. A 20-25% tip is fine for a great hair cut.

I moved much like you did when we moved here. I moved my kitchen, bathrooms, artwork, garage and shop things, clothing not in drawers and quite a bit of my office although not a heavy desk. 6 minute drive. I'd boxed books and hadn't put them in my SUV yet, the movers graciously offered to take them as they had room. I had brought my own lamps too I think. . All my living room furniture was new and delivered by the store as were the appliances. I tipped each of the three man crew, who brought the heavier pieces only, $40 each, Same with the movers I hired to move my mother to her retirement apartment an hour from her home. They moved three rooms of furniture and her clothing, I packed her kitchen myself, put those things into my SUV. It was a warm day, I had water which they accepted, soft drinks that they declined. Two men. They preferred to stop and buy their own lunch after they had packed and before they unpacked her things in her new city. I tipped them $40 each, although I think they were worth about 10 times that much for as helpful and good natured as they were that day last Fall ;-) Editing to add - I just remembered with the company hired to move mother, they brought us coffee! They called and asked how many were at the house that morning, and arrived with Starbucks, their treat ;-)

Needs some tipping advice in NYC

I go to NYC often, and usually leave $10/night for housekeeping. I rarely have someone help me with bags, but if they do, $5 or $10 depending on what kind of cash I have on me. And $5 or so if the doorman gets me a cab. For cab/Lyft rides I usually tip 20%. (And do take yellow cabs if you can - they're often less expensive, and depending on the time of day will be quicker to get than waiting around for a Lyft. The subway is best of all for some destinations.) Enjoy your trip - it's my favorite city!

If they'll be moving heavy furniture, something tells me that will end up on your final bill -- but if you see it doesn't, I agree with azzalea on that point.

Otherwise, no, I wouldn't tip them.
(Now, MOVERS I will tip.)

I've decided to tip each guy (2 of them) $20 each. I have a large, heavy island piece that they were very careful about moving. Plus they moved the raqnge and fridge. And they did some sub sub-flooring repair, part of the Sears contract. So I figure an extra $20 each is fine.

Jannie, we recently got a new frig and I tipped $10 for each of the two guys. Wasn't much moving except for the old frig which I plugged into another kitchen plug. I think you were very generous--and it is the season, isn't it?

If someone "just does their job" and no more, I don't like to tip, even at a restaurant. I consider a tip a gratuity, something I give because I'm grateful for what I've received. When they do something extra, go out of their way to be careful and/or courteous, or the like, I appreciate it and I show it.

When they delivered my stove and frig I gave them each $10 because they were extra careful and went out of their way to do their job well. I think you were kind and generous with what you gave them. I'm sure they appreciated it.
