A Gift For Others

The one gift that means more to be then anything is a gift to others. A friend of our DIL'S husband just up and left her and their 2 kids a couple months ago. They have 2 kids in college. She took a janitor's job at the college to help with their tuition. She only makes a small pay on top of that. The guy moved into an expensive apartment with a gal from work he had been having an affair with. The girlfriend gave up custody of her 2 kids to be with this jerk. Says a lot for her, doesn't it? Anyway, I helped with gifts for her so she could give to her mom, sister plus a few friends for Christmas. I also sent each of them a $50.00 prepaid Visa card through Santa. I know Santa will never tell. I received the most amazing phone call from her last night for helping her with the gifts. I am going to do more of this type of thing. I have so much and I feel the need to give to others. Even the smallest thing means so much so much sometimes.

That's the true spirit of Christmas. You certainly blessed that friend of yours.

I couldn't afford much, but made up "You've Been Socked" stockings which I filled with goodies and gave one to two of our neighbors, the mailman, 3 of our doctors, and one for our daughter. Daughter in turn empied and refilled hers and gave it to a young man at a gas station who she said looked like he needed something to cheer him.

If you think it's really nice now, just wait until the bulb season begins next fall! You'll positively freak out! As late summer/fall approaches, we begin to put some bulbs to rest, or bring in the ones we had outdoors enjoying the sun... at that point, many of us are looking forward to the bulb catalogs we know will be coming soon... by Christmas, we're in full swing, buying bulbs and beginning to enjoy their blooms... it's awesome! After Christmas, the bulb sales begin... and we all scramble to find the varieties we're looking for at better prices! The photos are posted more frequently, and we're in the throes of our bulb addiction! By this time, we're about done with the purchasing... March is considered very late for buying the previous season's bulbs. Those of us who let our bulbs bloom on a natural schedule are now beginning to post more bloom pictures... and then, we fill in the slow summer months with garden photos, photos of other bulb types, etc... and we await fall again! It's sort of a full time forum... summer being the slowest season, and fall/winter being the busy time. I doubt you'll find another group of gardeners anywhere that are as special as this bunch! Everyone here is wonderful... I feel very fortunate to belong to this little online family! :-)

hey mojo pals! I've been MIA...got off the train for a stretch and missed it when it left the station... I am trying to get back on....I've had a physical and lots of tests and I am perfectly healthy supposedly...no diabetes, no thyroid probs, no Lyme, No "female problems", low cholesterol, the lump in my neck went away...so why do I still feel only about 75% most of the time?? I *am* within inches of being diagnosed with glaucoma...my pressure has been high for years and though my fields test come out fine, my optic nerve is showing some thinning...I go to talk to the doc on Sep 28.. to top it off, at my last competition on Oct 8, I turned my left ankle pretty seriously. While I am fine to walk on it with no pain, any lateral movement still hurts a month later and there is often tingling up the outside of my leg.... I called my doc yesterday and they wee supposed to get back to me about heading over for x-rays...I am still waiting... I think I will start to get back into upper body workouts, instead of just letting everything slide until my ankle feels better... looking forward to a fresh start on Part 5.... Nancy

GWlolo-Thanks for the links to the garlic press and measuring spoons! I have an old (inherited) garlic press and 2 sets of measuring spoons that are aluminum (I think they were all my mother's, but it's been so long that I don't really remember). I didn't feel like I could justify buying new when those are very functional, but I would like stainless steel instead of aluminum. I'm always looking for easy and inexpensive gift ideas to give my 2 DD's, and these are great! Here's an idea I have given a few people who are great cooks as presents: a handmade salt cellar. I also include some cool salt and maybe a book on salt (with recipes). I am so glad, Sue, I know everyone will enjoy it! Funny you mention the cost. When I first embarked on this, I was thinking it will be a big impact present where the gift is our time not the cost. Yikes, even with the 50% off, each book was $200 OMG. I didn't really expect that, but after all the work putting it together, I wasn't going to go back and trim. I may regret making them so large, 11x14, but I know i usually like photos to be bigger. I also fell for that very pricey for that "lay flat" upgrade that allow you to do those "centerfold" shots. Heck, i actually fell for every type of upgrade they offered, including a storage box. And then I have the engraved USBs and those boxes. But oh they will be so pretty. I actually went with this one because I liked the idea of putting a photo with it. They also have them in navy, grey, and Tiffany blue. I was upset that I had to switch my product to Shutterfly, but I have to give them a big shout out. They have added so many features to their books, and so many options for designing them. Plus, they still had my photos on there from 2005, though I had not done business w them in years. In some cases, they were photos i did not find anywhere else in my files. Whew. One of the best parts of making the book was doing the captions, and adding in things like scans of their footprints, their baby announcements, etc. I also commissioned DH to write a letter to each of them talking about the day they were born and their first few years. He did a wonderful job, brought tears to my eyes and made me laugh, too. We finished yesterday. Finally. Annie - love that tree! we do have a few photo ornaments, but a whole tree! Fab Running - Even from book 1 to book 3 i got better at it and fancier. There are soooooo many options and embellishments and features. And if you have the right dates on your photos, the autofill feature is a great start. Enjoy!

Susie, that truly is what the Christmas spirit is all about. not just this time of the year, but throughout the year.
Many, many years ago, my father lost his job. We literally had nothing left in the bank. A kind person gave hime (anonymously) $100 which was just what we needed until he started his new job.
We never learned who the person was. My father would bring this story up for years. That someone knew the situation he was in and then reached out and helped when he needed it most.

Several religions use a similar teaching to the "You shall love your neighbour as yourself".

How many of us ask God about it before we part with any/each of our dollars?

That's lovely -- and *personal*, which gifts to charities cannot match. I especially like the sentiment where Linda's DD gave a Christmas stocking to someone just because she thought "he needed cheering up"!

One of the most heartwarming things I was involved in this Christmas was going to our 2 local nursing homes. Our ladies church group started a new thing for the patients. We collected gifts for the patients to give to their families. We went to each nursing home and had all the gifts displayed so each patient could pick out what they needed for their family gift giving. We wrapped each gift for them. Then the nursing homes had a family party and they gave their gifts to them. We had some wonderful gifts. It was amazing to see their faces as they shopped. I went out today and picked up some nice things for next year. Also picked up some nice gift bags. I will watch for things throughout the year. Such a wonderful feeling. I also picked out a lady to pay to have her hair done each week. They have set up an account for her and I can go and put money in it for her at any time.. I used to do this for my mother...

En route home after Christmas celebration, I debated, as we have been mere acquaintances, stopping at a neighbouring farmer's home, to offer them Christmas wishes and good wishes for the New Year, and went in.

We sat and had good conversation over snacks and coffee, then the lady sent me home with a plate of leftovers from Christmas dinner.

The man said that he'd dropped a package in my back porch earlier in the day, disappointed that he hadn't found me at home.

It was a large plate of Christmas cakes, cookies and candies ... and a gift card to Tim Hortons (nationwide chain with some spillover into the U.S.) coffee shop (more modest than Starbucks)!

I am pleased ... and thankful: they were unanticipated gifts.

ole joyfuelled ... aided by a cookie (or two) and coffee/milk, on occasion
