My ornament for this years party-

I decided to make a miniature version of Elf on the Shelf. He's 4.5" to the top of his hat.

I hope 3 or 6 of the other ladies didn't make the same decision! LOL The party is Tuesday evening, I'll have photos of all the ornaments on Wed.

Thanksgiving memories '50s and'60s Mom had seven sisters and brothers each with their own kids. Grandma's house was the go to place for Thanksgiving dinner. The yard was about an acre it seemed and three quarters of it was garden. Corn in the back row, beans and peas, potato hills and squash, lettuce, cabbage, carrots, turnips, onions and much more. Rhubarb and ground cherry bushes were around the front edge. The chicken house was full and eggs were plentiful. All of this bounty went into Ball jars and ended up on the shelves in the root cellar. We drove from Urbandale to Shellrock the day before or early that morning. Cherries and apples from our yard were packed and brought along to make pies. Velma, our Mom, Dora, Marlys, Leola, Margaret and Roberta were vying for their spots in the kitchen under the eye of Grandma Lena. It was a very busy kitchen. There would be as many as twenty kids out playing games in the yard while the men watched the football games. Some of us would pick ears of corn and peas right from the garden to munch, mmm so good. Some years we would head to a local pond and fish with our red and white bobbers on bamboo poles. Grandma had a huge round oak table that could be extended with three centre boards. the dining room was the largest room in the house with a coal burning stove. There were two or three card tables set up for the kids and a side board to hold the food dishes that would not fit on the table. Some of us kids were put to work setting the tables. The smells from the kitchen were overwhelming by this time and the men would try to get tastes of favourites as they wandered in to the kitchen for another Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. They could be charming when entering the Women's domain to steel treats. When we all sat down to eat the conversation would be about what had happened in the last year with each family. We were the furthest away and learning these bits of news was always interesting. The meal would linger for an hour at least or more then the older kids would have the job of cleaning up the table and washing the dishes. Men would retreat to to living room for more football while the women took over the dining room to continue the family news. The latest knitting or needle work was passed around while all the kids lives were reviewed. Napping was in order for those affected by the triptophan then the local families would return home. we usually stayed over night and left the next morning as the drive was long. Have had and been to a few Thanksgiving days since but none on the scale of the ones I so fondly remember. We make our own memories of special events as we progress through our lives with new friends family and acquaintances. Make the best of your holiday this week and savour the experience. As I recall, the stiffener was made by Aleene's, right, Jenni? I couldn't find it anywhere around here so Jenni helped me out. *hugging on my buddy's neck* I think you can find it online, though, the bottle is now white and pink, I think. I've also read about people using liquid starch, but I didn't try it. The biggest thing is- be sure the stiffener is completely dry before you take the balloon out, or it will collapse. I had that happen a couple of times, so I stuck another balloon inside the mess and blew it back up and then wet it again and let it dry completely again, and salvaged it. Kudzu- I nearly gave up during my first star, I just couldn't figure out the 3-D part of the star, but once I did I felt like such a doofus, lol. I guess I don't read instructions well, I do better with videos. Thanks for looking and admiring, ladies!

Scissors, you bet I thank them! I grew up with a father that plowed snow for the county. Many holidays were spent without him. I am careful to give all road crews, not just snow plows, plenty of room, and slow down for them. We are very spoiled. When dad first started with the county, they only put cinders on the intersections and hills. They didn't start plowing until there was 4" of snow on the roads. They didn't have salt when he first started. Then they would put just a little salt in with the cinders. Now, if they don't salt and plow right away, everyone has a fit, and doesn't know how to slow down and drive. Mind you, going toooooo slow is also dangerous. Remember to gently pump your brakes instead of slaming them on to stop, keep a bigger distance between you and the other vehicles, ect. Happy New Years Tami

As the veteran of many, many teenage girl sleepovers, this would be my tip: When I went to bed, I would look in on the girls and say, "By the way, if I have to get up in the night to ask anyone to be quiet, I will NOT be making waffles for breakfast." Worked like a charm ;-)

As usual you're ornament is great. Elf is everywhere these days and the star collar is making me smile. Your going to have a giant tree by now, with so many amazing ornaments.

I think that's your best one ever. I always look forward to seeing the ornament you made and then see all the ones from your exchange. I love the quilt, too. You made that also, right? Such a talented KT'er!!!

how nice, I'm so glad that you have an exchange, I'm trying to get rid of my craft supplies. Just dont like throwing anything in the trash have to find a local place. BE glad you have others around to share

Toni, you'll hate this- I don't even decorate for Christmas anymore. I go to the party for the camaraderie and fun and food and to exchange the ornaments, but I don't ever do anything with them. Usually I end up giving them away to my friends or to people just starting out that have no ornaments. These rascally cats have made it impossible to have little shiny or dangling things hanging around. All my good stuff is in the attic!

Enjoyingspring- I don't have a pattern for this, it's just twisted chenille stems- 5 red ones and a bit of white for his cuffs, a painted ball for the head, 3/4" I think, and cone of felt for his hat. I pretty much winged it.

sjerin, you're on your own for curtains! I have one roman shade that I made for myself and that's IT for window treatments. I appreciate the vote of confidence, though. :)

Terri, thank you! You are so sweet. I'm glad you've enjoyed those things from so long ago! Not an advent, but a calendar, see below!

Patti, thank you and yes, I made the perpetual calendar/quilt that he's hanging on. Each month has a different banner and I recently made a side-panel so I could display more than just the five bitty blocks. This is December...

Our grandsons' other grandmother brought Elfie into their house along with a little gift for each day. The boys love it (4 and 6) so my DD does the whole thing. She makes a run to the Dollar Store for supplies to have Elfie visit for 2 weeks before Christmas and leave a little item for each boy.

I love seeing your ornaments each year, Flamey. I am not sure what Elf on a Shelf is though. I don't watch tv or go to the movies, so if it is something from tv or a movie, I have no idea.

Marilyn, I don't know if it started with a movie or what, but it sure is trendy right now. Take a look at Pinterest or just Google it and you'll see lots of cute photos of scenarios that fun parents have come up with, I would have loved this when I was a kid!

Hi Flamingo, I can follow all of the instructions except for the arms. They seem a bit long, you say to wrap the "raw" edges around the torso, what do you mean by that.

You have to judge how long you want your arms to be and then you wrap the excess, the part that is not the hand, the part that is the two raw pointy ends, around the torso. I like the added bulk on the torso.
