Lottery Winner donates all 40 Million

A Canadian recently won 40M and is giving it All to the Canadian Cancer research. He lost his wife 3 years ago to cancer.

I only hope that a decent amount of money actually goes there, and not in some CEO's pocket, or for administration.

Good for him. I never play the lottery, but in this mega one for 1/2 billion, if I'd buy one ticket and win, I'd donate 75% for animal rescue shelters and groups over the country.

1) What is the first thing you'd do or buy for your home . . . or would you sell it and buy another? If so, where? DH and kids would never want to move. But if they were agreeable, I'd move to a house in our neighborhood that had larger bedrooms, a real guest room, a larger living room, a real home office, and a really nice finished basement with real windows and a door to the back yard. And a screen porch overlooking a not-too-big, but bigger-than-ours back yard. 2) What is the first thing you'd do or buy for your spouse or SO? I know that many of us have kids, but to keep this game reasonably short, let's not go there now . . . so just your spouse/SO: A new BMW. 3) What the FIRST foreign country you'd plan a trip to . . . and do NOT tell us "around the world!" (LOL) . . . let this be a more specific answer: Does St. Bart's count as a foreign country? 4) What first charity would you donate a significant amount of money to, or start one of your own for what cause? This is too hard! I'd have to split over several. 5) What is the FIRST big thing you'd do for YOU? Hire a housecleaner once a week and a chef to make dinner every night! 6) OK, are you still following the rules ;^D ?? I know there would be many other purchases and trips, and we'd all save a big chunk of the money, too, but what ONE other thing would you spend some that money on? My 3 kids' college tuitions. Just starting on DS #1 this fall! Can't imagine what it will cost when we get to DD, who is still only 9.

There was an old man, Bob Edmonds, who claimed that he'd been done out of his rightful prize win, and fought the Lottery Corporation in court for three or four years, though it now appears that they'd been aware of a number of unusual claims by a number of their purveyors for some time. His story was told some time ago by an investigative program on our National Broadcaster's TV system. In the original settlement of his $250,000., he was to keep quiet. He fought for a longer time to be allowed to talk about the issue, and to have his lawyer's and court costs of $72,000. covered by the OLGC. Eventually he won. The OLGC agreed just before the weekend to cover his lawyer's and court fees, and to apologize. He knew about that, and the message arrived at the beginning of the week. His lawyer says that he knew that it was coming, but had not seen the letter ... when, after fighting cancer for several years, he died on the weekend. One wonders - did all of the hassle about the Lottery Corporation cause a greater deterioration in his health? Or - did he stubbornly keep going longer, refusing to be bulldozed?? We'll never know - but we do owe the old guy a vote of thanks for having pursued the issue, and to the national broadcaster, as well. ole joyful

Not exactly the lottery, but a nice middle-aged couple from our city won the HGTV Dream Home last year (2015). The local news media did a follow-up story on them and their friends were all very supportive and happy for them. They were able to sell their 70's tri-level and purchase an almost-new one-level ranch in an upscale neighborhood that better suited their lifestyle (grown kids and grandkids). I was one of 10 winners who won a trip for 2 to San Diego in a contest sponsored by Juicy Fruit in 2002 I think it was. The main event was a multi-performer concert headed by Alanis Morisette and included a private concert by her, reception, photos, etc. I took my DD and we had a ball. I don't even know why I entered as I seldom do anything like that. I don't even buy gum very often, but happened to do so and it caught my eye and sounded like fun so I did.

Depends on the sum - I figure I need $40 million. First off I would be down to collect the money next business day - without makeup - no one would recognize me in the picture the lottery insists on taking. I would have my banker meet me at the lottery office to take possession of the cheque. I would send my dog to the home boarder's while I moved us out same day to an apartment/hotel. I would hire a tax accountant/lawyer and redo our wills. I would buy a house that had a separate apartment for a professional dog walker - I hate the cold - don't mind the walk part - it is the "out" part. I would be responsible for the hugs and kisses. I would find an "appropriate" charity to immediately donate our house to - and I am sure you all know what I mean by "appropriate" charity. I would sure as heck not be giving interviews to the City newspaper and having my face splashed everywhere - people who do this want the publicity - and they really feel that everyone is happy for them - face it - unless you are very fond of someone or you are going to get some of the money -you are generally not that happy for the winner of a big prize! Of course I want the big prize because that would make a difference. Not that I would turn down my nose at $2 million but you really couldn't do a lot with $2 million these days - creature comforts certainly - but only so much. Recently 4 Cdns. split a big prize so received $12.5 million each. So if you took your $12.5 million and bought a big house in the fancy part of town, a "cottage" in the Muskoka's, a BMW, furnished and secured both homes, paid insurance/taxes - you would have nothing left. I would want something to do - no doubt animal related, but generally people who really love their jobs and might want to continue working often can't due to the constant harassment by people. And I sure wouldn't need any new friends or relatives - the ones I have wouldn't get anything. Phone and e-mail would be appropriately handled. Now all I have to hope is that when I win that the prize isn't $2 million split between 12 ticket holders. If we go away and I have a points seat and am on a different plane than my husband we put the lottery tickets in the safety deposit box - heaven forbid that his plane go down with the ticket on his person - or of course, mine.

I took my cancer treatment at the Tom Baker center in Calgary .It is a wonderful treatment center. This man is so generous and very smart and knows the cancer society only takes a very small amount for administration. I have been a volunteer for the Canadian cancer society for the past 12 years , its a very worthy cause and I am sure he has been well advised to make such a big contribution. God bless his big heart.

Having worked for non-profits, I would not hand over that amount of money without watching very closely how it is used. Very closely.

However, his heart is in the right place. That is an astounding gift!

Dedtired is right. I, too am cynical as I have seen a lot of $$$ squandered by CEO's and administrators. They look after themselves and their benefits first and foremost. A TV program I watched recently gave financial percentages about a number of organizations who spent their donations on things other that was intended. I was disgusted.

I would give most of it away too, but I would make sure it was spent wisely. I would choose a small organization where that kind of donation would have the most impact.

I wouldn't just hand it over, either. I used to take care of the tropical green plants at Save the Children International when I lived in Missouri and it was unbelievable what they did to get money - totally disgusting. I shudder to think about what they did with the funds,after hearing conversations between the workers!

Rhizo that is exactly what they would say as those team of professionals spend the money on golf weekends, expensive catered meals, out of town seminars at expensive resorts, lavish retirement pensions and bonuses. It is mind boggling when they don't even feel guilty as they are "experts" in their fields with overblown senses of entitlement. I think most of us have seen this in our workplaces. I sure did.

My husband has a HS friend that worked for a very large world wide Charity..she had quite the expense account and pay check..

Yeah no...we'd rather our money be directly used..
We don't even give change in the Salvation Army buckets..

Check out givewell.org.....very few charities are really effective....local ones are probably better than large national ones for the most part.

Holly, I don't see that anywhere. I saw again this morning that he's giving it all away. He has all the money he needs for him and his family, he's recently retired. He said it's all going to cancer research.
