Genealogists, where can I find....

DH would like to put a veterans medallion on his dad's gravestone. He can get one free from the government if he fills out a form on line and sends that along with a copy of DFIL's DD-214, his discharge paper. Do any of you know where we could obtain a copy? It seems like I remember someone saying it should be registered at one of the county offices, but I can't remember which one, or if I am correct in my thinking. I don't think we have a copy of it ourselves.

Hi Tami,

I don't post very often...mostly just lurk, because I don't have internet access at home.

When I was trying to get military records for my Dad, I called Social Security, because I didn't know where else to look for help. They suggested I try calling the Veteran's Dept. I called the local office, and the Adjutant General was very helpful. I had a copy in my hands in less than a week. This was in New Hampshire, so I'm not sure if it would be the same where you are, but it would be worth trying. You might also try the link below for footnote.com. I don't know if they have discharge papers on-line or not. It may also depend on the branch of service, I'm not sure. My Dad was Army, European Theater during World War 2. Hope this helps!!

It got me thinking about how things like this are no longer printed in the papers, at least not ours. All this history is being lost. I hadn't thought of that, Murraysmom, but it's absolutely true. Our local paper may be an exception--for now. I used to be a reporter/photographer there, and we did feature stories in addition to the news. They also have local ladies who write social columns--who's visiting whom, etc. But the Scranton paper of today would never devote that many column inches to a human-interest story about a house fire, especially one not in their county. My old farmhouse had newspaper wedged into spaces between the hemlock planks that make up the walls, and when my son was a kid he used to carefully remove them and try to open them up. Most of the time they were far too brittle to hold together, but one was readable. We ran off a copy for all the students in his class. To me, the most interesting part of the page was the social notes: Who bought a new driving horse, who was sick in bed, etc. It just made the period come alive. Our current news is just simply alarming.

I can't imagine why anyone would buy something that memorializes such a horribly sad event, unless it was to get it back in the family. I found this via a google search: The history of Coffin Plates or casket plates is a long but not very well documented one. Coffin plates are decorative adornments attached to a coffin that contain genealogical information like the name and death date of the deceased. In Victorian Times (and earlier) the coffin plate was removed and presented to the family as a memento of the dearly departed. With almost 500 coffin plates now online, AncestorsAtRest.com is the largest repository of these wonderful genealogical treasures. Each coffin plate has the name of the deceased plus date of death, and usually date of birth. Images of the plates are provided. You can search these coffin plates for free - who knows, you might find an ancestor or two!

Thank you, Murraysmom. I hadn't seen those FindAGrave memorials before. Phineas is my great-grandmother's brother. It was only a few years ago that I learned the Phillips line of my family started out as Sieradzki. I had no idea I was part Polish. Then when I had my DNA tested I learned I was also part Scandinavian and Italian. The latter was an even bigger surprise. :-) My cousin hopes to find the maiden name of Phineas' mother, Amelia, on one of her children's death certificate. He obtained the one for my great-grandmother, Esther (whose name can be taken off the list above), but that gave both her mother's and father's name as Phillips. Could be true, of course, but he thinks it's a mistake. Thanks again!

Finally I can put my little Grey Pearl to rest without believing I am to blame. I'm stll sad though. Blue for You can be decidedly gray at times and is moderately healthy and hardy here. Gets BS without fungicide but survises without it. PIcture below shows more of the warm tone, cool temps bring out the blue.

Thank you Wolf_Seeker. We will check out the web site. I know I have a copy of the death certificate, but I don't think we have a copy of the discharge papers. DH wasn't the executor of the estate, so, if DFIL kept them, I think it's unlikely we will have it. He passed in 1994.

You also might contact any funeral home and ask them for information. As to a veterans medallion, check with your local VFW or American Leion Post. They might help you.

Marie, thanks for another idea. I need to get down on the floor and go thru a filing cabinet to see exactly what we do have. However, that is not something my body is looking forward to! LOL!
