This is an absolutely amazing story! Congratulations on finding your lovely great, great, grandmother!

I met my Great-Grandmother when I was 7. I loved her dearly, but I was far too young to think to ask about her ancestors.

I have a small album, but with few names...do have my gg uncles shaving mug...it might be a double interest as it's both masonic and he was a dr...now you have me pulling it out!

What a great picture! And the names . . . Asneath and Myrtilla. That was a wonderful find, and how good of the woman to take the time to track down your niece.

Ah, now I have read your other post and see that she was a school teacher. I'd 'guessed' Quaker by the plain dress and buttons.

Many years ago I was attending an estate sale and bought and box of goodies that had just one thing in it I wanted.
After taking that one thing out, I was rifling through the rest and came across several photos of people in a jewelry store appearing to be from early 1900's

The display cases looked oddly familiar to me.

My ex DH bought all my jewelry from a place one town over from us. The lady that owns it was fairly advanced in age, and most every day sat in a rocker in the corner of the store to greet everyone that came in.
I took those photos over and stood right inside the door staring at my pictures, looking up and down comparing to her display cases.
"Sally , honey come here and show me what you are looking at" came from across the room.
I kneeled beside her and without a word handed her the photos.
I saw a tear start to well up.
The people in the photos were her grandparents in their original store and the cases were the ones still being used by her!
She tried to give them back to me as they were "mine".
We had those photos framed and are still today part of their displays.

It would be a dream come true for someone to find pictures of my grandparents and find me. I wish I had something. I always look at old pictures to see if there are any names. Usually there aren't.

My niece wondered how these pictures ended up in Oregon as the family was from Ohio, Indiana and Kansas.
My paternal grandparents died before my Dad married my Mother, but I do have pictures of them.

What a wonderful exciting find. I had a similar experience. We started a cousin's page on FB and one of the cousins was starting to do our ancestry. As a coincidence a person in Canada was doing the same thing. She searched on FB for people with the same last name as ours and joined our group. Long story short is is our second cousin and had a photo of our mutual great grandmother, a purebred Micmac Indian who married my great grandfather who came from Scotland. She was adopted after the great starvation that took place at the Eskasoni reservation in the 1800s. She was adopted by a family who had five grown children and she was brought up as a white person due to persecution in those days. We now have a framed photo of her in our home and I admire her so much. She had a difficult life on a farm and yet became a nurse. So strange as we have so many nurses and drs. in my family.

I love all these stories. It is the most interesting history lessons ever. I keep thinking about joining Ancestry just to see who is out there.

A lot of families 'just kept moving west' over time. Many people have roots in Pennsylvania and Ohio. After the Civil War people from both 'sides' left sorrow behind and picked up for the 'Territories'. Some of *their* children kept on going until they were halted by the Pacific Ocean. WWI and WWII showed 'farm boys' the world beyond the fields. Industry drew more people as well.

There have been tides of migration across the US as well as to it from the Old World. Those early tides swept the Native Americans aside.

I'm with Murraysmom--keep 'em coming. Fifteen or so years ago our family took a trip to Canada and stopped on the way in a small town in Washington state, my father's birthplace. We toured their very small town museum and I found an unnamed photo of a group of people, one of whom had my face. It was so uncanny that I kept going back to look at it. I'm still not sure who she was.

There is a site that has been mentioned on some of the genealogy Facebook groups for people who want to get pictures back to family members. You would be surprised how many people actually look for photos in antique stores and flea markets just for that purpose.

I think there is also a site for those who need help dating photos.

murray - you can search Ancestry, and find names. But, only the names, you can't see all the data/documents. If something is interesting, try your public library, which usually has free access to Ancestry to view the complete data. Take notes, print data, or take a flash drive to save it, Good luck.
