a couple of years ago I made the cinammon/applesauce ornaments...the cinammon didn't smell at all...what's a good brand of cinammon?

Meh... I think they are all the same.

I have made the ornaments, and I found the best way to get them to smell is to add some other spices with it. A little ground clove will help. You could add a couple drops of cinnamon oil too.

The best ones I made was using the cheapest big bottle of cinnamon from Sam's. I made them with applesauce with some Elmer's glue mixed in. I mixed it well in my Kitchenaid mixer so it was nice and smooth.

I rolled them out between two pieces of parchment paper.

Penzy's Vietnamese cinnamon is amazing and worth every penny, and is actually cheaper than most grocery store brands unless you get dollar store spices I guess. The cooking forum probably has a few threads dedicated to cinnamon.

Everything looks okay. Sealing before or after grouting is up to you, but for DIY that can be good advice. Just don't slop it on and get sealer all over the sides of the tiles, in the grout lines. You just want it on the face of the tile. Grout, sanded versus unsanded, it depends on the width of the grout lines. Less than 1/8", use unsanded. 1/8" or wider, use sanded. Grout and the latex admix. Most grouts are already modified. For whatever grout you choose read the fine print on the bag. Some allow additional modifiers to be added. Some recommend you don't. Best advice for grouting is to mix, mix, and mix the grout. Again, instructions are on the bag. Properly mixed grout spreads like soft budda. Most undermix and it spreads more like somewhat sandy, sightly crunchy, peanut buddah. Post pics, I'm always up for a good basketweave installation.

Re: stains It was not clear from your phrasing if the stains came as a result of cooking the pancakes or if the plancha had stains out of the box that just seem unremovable after cooking on them. As I noted above, the first time I used my plancha/griddle, I ran it too hot and got some pretty good burned butter stains. I was able to remove those stains by applying undiluted Dawn dish detergent and scrubbing with a dampened blue ScotchBrite ((non-stick suitable scrubbie) Took a bit of elbow grease but that cleaned off all the stains. There seems to be a Demeyere Non-Abrasive Cleaner and Stainless Steel Polish. User reviews seem very positive about it doing a good job with burned-on oily stains. A google search showed it to be available from the likes of Amazon, BB&B, etc. Also did some checking on using my old stand-by, Bar Keeper's Friend (BKF). The Demeyere instruction booklet does advise against using "abrasive cleansers" but that seems to be about harsh scrubbing with the likes of Comet and Ajax. A google search on BKF + Silvinox turned up recommendations for making a wet paste of BKF and water. Daub it over the stains rather than scrubbing. Let the wet paste sit for an hour or so letting the Oxalic acid do its thing. Then, wash it off or scrub with non-stick-suitable cloth, sponge, etc. OTOH, if the plancha came with the stains out of the box, it can be returned or swapped for a replacement. My shipment even came with a return label in the box in case I wanted to return it. Also, replacement of marred units was discussed in the Chowhound thread. They recommended calling "Susan" at the Zwilling warehouse at 800-777-4308 about returns and replacements.

Makes sense really. I read a lot of recommendations to use a gloss level one step higher than the wall gloss level. Note the first guide includes woodwork, doors, trim in all gloss levels but flat. I don't know the difference between "woodwork" and "trim" and "wood trim" in their guide. They do the same thing with doors. What's the difference between woodwork, closet doors and doors in this guide? I've also read the general recommendation for flat paint on ceilings... period... Except when you want to bounce light off it into the home interior. And flat on walls except for rooms that might see more dirt and need more cleaning such as bathrooms, kitchens, insides of closets, hallways. And then choose your trim one gloss level higher. Then save the high gloss for perfectly smooth surfaces you want to draw attention to. Really there's a lot to read on this. I read what I could to figure out what gloss level to use in my laundry closet and bathroom. Even I'm giving TMI now...😁

Well for cinnamon ornies..I would not use Penzeys..that's good stuff.

I use dollar store cinnamon..and strained over night applesauce only.
Just pulled a paper bag of last years made from the hall closet and still smell quite yummy.

I second the Penzeys comment. They sell several different 'strains ' of cinnamon, ALL of them hugely superior to anything from the grocery. The qualith of the raw ingedients makes a difference.

I second Terri in getting bulk from Sams or costcos, for making ornaments. The kids made them 3 times in the past and they smelled for years. Adding the oil or clove sounds like a good idea.

What chi83 (and others) said "Penzy's Vietnamese cinnamon is amazing and worth every penny". Be assured, there IS a difference!

But, you're looking for something to make the ornaments smell, not to make them taste great! I'd check out the cinnamon oil suggestions. Essential oils provide a LOT of scent!

I'm aware that this discussion is about a craft. Penzeys cinnamon has an uncredible, long lasting aroma and that's why I suggested it.

Socks, I'm with you about gifting with Penzeys. I've picked some of their salt free spices, some of their grilling rubs, and others that I think are so special.

Be careful with cinnamon oil..it could burn, if you handle it with bare skin..
I'd knead with gloves on if adding the oil.
