The phone call I received this morning.

From my daughter:

"Hi Mom. This is PVT *****. I have arrived safe and sound at Basic Training. Please do not send any food, cigarettes, cell phones or batteries as I will not be allowed to have them. You will be receiving a packet from the Red Cross so if a problem arises, contact them and they will contact my company. Please do not attempt to contact my company. After this call is over, I will text you my address and then lock up my phone. It will be some time before I am able to contact you again. Thank you for your support."

It was very clear from the start of the call that she was reading a form letter meant to state the purpose of the call without getting personal. She spent 4 days in reception and we texted a lot during that time. Now, the fun is over and the work begins.

I am so proud of my daughter! We have been through some very tough times. liz_ga understands! :)

Oh my. I remember those days! Be very proud of her. My son went through so much before his entrance to The Marines.

I had the same issue with my previous machine. I had a v.92 modem that allowed me to have calls show up on my screen. I could accept and disconnect or ignore and stay online. I had some instances of people getting a busy signal, and the call did not show up on the screen. I never could figure out the reason. Not any help here - but I did want to confirm your problem. I do think the issue lies with your phone service provider. I have a new machine and am trying to get the NetWaiting to work. No luck yet - but I am still trying. Very frustrating because it worked with the old computer, but not this one. All "help" tells me it my phone provider that does not support v.92 - but it did work before.... sigh...... LOL!!

Something similar happened to me a couple of years ago. It WAS my son calling from where he lives - Las Vegas, stating if I didn't wire him $2,000 by 4 that afternoon, someone was going to hurt him. I said 'let me get back to you'. I immediately called the police, told them about the phone call, gave them his address, where he worked and his phone number. They said they'd check into it. My son called me about 3 that afternoon to say he'd handled it. My point is - it COULD be a relative who is trying to scam you. My son wasn't in trouble - he has a gambling addiction and wanted money to go gamble!

I think the calls are hilariously pathetic. English obviously not their first language, so when they try to frighten the living daylights out of people, it just comes across as ridiculous. Sometimes, I'm tempted to answer, act like I believe them, pretend to freak out and just keep them hanging on for a good long while, wasting their time until I tell them to shove it. Eh, obviously not tempted enough since those calls go to the machine like all the rest whose number I don't recognize.

So sorry to hear about your father, but nice that you got a final phone call. I can see how that would be comforting. When I lived in Culver City (1989-1994) I had a land line with a phone number that had previously belonged to Larry Welk III, a helicopter pilot for channel 9 news. At this time I mostly used the name Larry instead of Lars because Larry is what my family called me, and that is the name that I identified myself by on my answering machine, which had cassette tapes back then. At one point I started to get a lot of phone calls from companies that wanted to sell me insurance for my helicopter, and this would take up a lot of space on the cassette tapes, which I could not fast forward through at that time. Therefore I changed my outgoing message to say, "Hello, you have reached 310 377-8855, the house of NO LAWRENCE WELK music. If you think you have reached this number in error, take two Geritol and dial again in the morning." The calls from the insurance companies stopped after that. However, when my mother heard this message, it made her mad, and she made me change it because she was a Lawrence Welk fan.

Wow, we never did anything like that in the Air Force. We were allowed packages and mail from home in basic. ) :

That was almost word for word identical to the call I received when my youngest daughter went to USMC boot camp. Best of everything to your daughter. And try not to worry.

Best wishes to both of you for a great experience.

I remember my Army basic training very well. In "Reception" status before beginning actual boot camp, we were issued all our clothing and equipment. The next day, we were given cardboard boxes into which we needed to put everything single item we'd brought with us. IE, civilian clothes that were henceforth prohibited. We were told to address the box to our home. Only Army issued items could remain with us.

I put a note in with my clothes - "Dear Mom and Dad. Here are all my things. I will work hard to be sure that nothing else gets shipped back to you in a box, myself included".

I'm not very worried... much. :)

Kath - she is allowed to receive mail and packages but none of those specific items. I have already written a letter of support and will send some stamps but I don't think I will send her anything other than that. The army will provide her with all she needs.

Very cute, but not funny! lol

Just to add... she will be home for Christmas Exodus on Dec. 20th-3th. So I wasn't meaning to say I wouldn't be giving her anything for Christmas. :)

I was in the Canadian Armed Forces......Basic training was challenging, but it was a blast...of course a lot of the time, one may not have been thinking that, but it didn't take long to make new friends and do things one never thought they could do. I know basic training here in Canada has changed a lot...more telephone calls and even internet access, crazy!! All the best

Moonie, this is a big turning point for your dear daughter and your family too. We always worry about our "kids" just a little, but mostly I'm sure you are so very proud of her, and rightly so. This will be a very special Christmas for you all.
