some learning for you ... after 50 years of observation.. it never fails to amaze me.. how every single plant of a certain kind will bloom within days of each other .. every spring i am simply amazed ... a further interest .. that i have noted on forsythia ... being out in the country.. with a very small town nearby ... is how the theory fails ... the forsythia in town bloom one to 2 weeks earlier.. as compared to just 5 miles away on my former horse pasture ... we are surely all the same zone ... and what that is all about is MICRO CLIMATES .. the small city has less wind due to the buildings.. and i think.. more importantly .. a lot of pavement... and that increases the ambient temps in the city a few degrees in spring.. just enough to make things happen .. a week or so earlier.. most spring things are triggered by soil temps.. and the soil warms just a bit faster in town.. due to the retained heat at night ... since we all get the same sun ... my soil just gets real cold at night.. wherein the pavement holds the heat of the day longer ... warming the soil just a bit faster ... and making things bloom just a little earlier ... go figure on all that ... keep us posted on any other observations you make... ken

Cherries with the name 'Serrulata' are those found in the Satozakura group, which are the cultivated cherries. These derive mainly from a number of the wild Japanese varieties listed above. In addition, there is the Kanhizakura (Prunus campanulata), which was brought to Japan much later, and can tolerate warmer climates.

Genetic backgrounds of most Japanese cherries of garden origin are not known, some kinds are more than 1,000 years old. Some are hybrids, others can be seen to be variations of particular wild species. The practice of leaving out parental designations when referring to Sato Zakura not known to belong to specific crosses with their own epithets is the same as with numerous other garden plants including garden roses and flowering crab apples. In the old days western botanists gave Japanese cherries of garden origin (and various other newly described plants of garden origin) botanical names, as though they were wild species. For instance the name Prunus serrulata Lindl. (P. serrulata 'Alboplena') refers to a specific, double flowered garden cherry* introduced from Canton in 1822. And is not, therefore applicable to any other Sato Zakura. As in it being used as part of a combination indicating a cultivar is a pure form of it. P. serrulata 'Tai Haku' for instance. That would only be a valid combination if there actually was a pure species P. serrulata Lindl., of which 'Tai Haku' was a non hybrid variant. Since P. serrulata Lindl. is itself a horticultural variant - to which many of them are not even known to be related - it is never correct to list other Japanese cherries of garden origin as cultivars of it. *And is still in use, despite being inapt
