Got the flu....or food poisoning...

Ugh. Started last evening around 6pm. after I came home from a play, bought some chicken on the way home from a grocery deli and some mac. salad. Vomiting until 1:30am, dry heaves until 4am, then diarrhea. It's 5:47pm. here right now and I finally crawled out of bed where I've been snoozing off and on all day. Mom brought me up some popsicles around 11am. this morning, can' explain it but they are my "comfort" when I'm sick. My mouth was incredibly dry and after three stayed down over the course of three hours, I attempted a cup of water - which stayed down. I threw the chicken and the mac salad away! I will never eat again!

Right now I'm sipping a cup of Lemon/Ginger tea with honey and a piece of dry toast. I hope it doesn't mess with my stomach. But or the aches and pains, I took a couple Bayer Back and Body, will see what happens. And just yesterday I was saying how I might go get a flu shot this year, sheesh.

Brief story about this recall in the Canberra Times on the weekend. Good comment Beanmomma. I know international trade has benefits. I would hate for people in cold countries to miss out on tropical fruits or people in landlocked countries to miss out on seafood. There are probably better examples but you know what I mean. There's a logical level of sharing of resources and skills. And then there's what we have now. For example much of our seafood goes overseas and our shops are full of imported vanamai prawns and something called bassa. Doesn't make sense to me. We buy most of our food at the markets. The greenies would probably criticise me for that extra weekly car trip but what I buy has travelled a lot less than what I would have to buy at my local supermarket. I discovered the European Union consumer website a couple of years ago (ec.europa.eu/consumers/dyna/rapex for products and there's a section for food as well). Interesting reading. Most of the recalled products originate in countries where things are produced cheaply. Makes one's efforts to reduce, reuse, recycle seem like a joke when one contemplates the amount of cheap rubbish (always including lots of toys) that gets shipped huge distances only to be thrown out. Or is it then shipped somewhere else that will accept it? A few years ago there was a travelling sale in town of manchester originally destined for Europe. No further explanation was given. I found out a little later it was around the time the Europeans were tightening their rules regarding fungicides and dyes in imported textiles. I'm glad we didn't buy any. Sorry about the rant. Hope this problem has now been stopped and no more animals suffer.

This message has kind of gotten hijacked from the original post to an argument over the risks/benefits of genetic engineering. Certainly genetically engineered crops are being developed to produce a marketable result (GM seeds) and side effects may not be of the utmost concern. However, an underlying theme of developing these crops is to reduce the potential side effects of other pesticides by reducing their use and substituting pesticides that are safer, non-toxic or less toxic to non-target species, and have a reduced potential to cause damage to non-target species or areas. There is the potential for Bt crops to kill Monarch caterpillers, however it is still probably less toxic than the alternatives. Bt crops do not produce a bug free field. Many species of insects are immune to Bt. Caterpillars are generally not immune to it. Insects that are not eating the corn are not a target of the Bt corn, and Monarchs do not eat the corn. The risk lies in the movement of corn pollen carrying the Bt to the Monarch's food source. Still, the bloom period for corn will run a couple weeks in the summer. The rest of the growing season, it is not shedding any Bt material. Thus, there is risk to non-target Monarch larvae for a couple weeks. Adults would not be harmed, just larvae during this period. Without Bt corn, the control of insect pests in the crop would generally require sprays or soil treatments that would kill a much broader spectrum of insects, including all adult Monarchs that might be in the field. Thus while the use of Bt crops might not be totally safe for non-target species, it is still probably much safer than the alternatives, and it is more effective on the target pests. Seems like a winning solution here--and with time it can still be improved. But if the early steps aren't profitable for the developers, they will never move on to develop even safer products down the road. With herbicide resistant crops, the plants are producing and carrying no pesticides. What the genes do is allow farmers to spray the crop with broad spectrum, low toxicity herbicides and the plant has the ability to deactivate the herbicide quickly so it suffers no damage. There are valid concerns with these technologies, however we need to explore them as they offer the potential to reduce the use of toxic pesticides and non-target damage dramatically compared to conventional technologies. When it comes to the potential for the bunny cottonwoods to spread by seed or cross into other poplars growing wild, Monsanto had techniques to render their genetically modified crop seeds sterile so they could not transfer into other plants, however that was killed with the help of those claiming that potential outcrossing was a terrible risk. Sometimes I think the anti-GM people are less interested in controlling the risks of GM technology than they are in finding issues to generate memberships and donations to feather their nests and perpetuate the discord.

I am a new member of this forum. I have really enjoyed looking at the terrariums linked on these pages. The info regarding certain harder-to-keep varieties of plants has also been helpful. When I read this thread, I felt that I had to reply. PDF's are not hard to keep. There are 10 year old children in my neighborhood who are successfully maintaining a vivarium with the frogs, and even breeding the frogs. Personally, I have over 50 vivariums in my home. Each one contains some poison dart frogs. Any and every color you can imagine. Orchids, bromeliads, tropical mosses, waterfalls, you name it. I really like the terrariums, but when you add a pair of bright, electric blue frogs, now you have some life!! Yes, you do have to culture, or purchase, the fruit flies. The flies we use in the hobby cannot fly. They are non-invasive and very easy to culture. They do not smell either. I have 200 cultures going at a time, there is a slight smell with this many cultures, but most visitors to our frog rooms do not even notice it. Mixing the frogs and plants to create vivariums has been the most rewarding journey of my life. I encourage everyone, not to base your opinions of keeping PDF's based on heresay, or an experience of a friend from 10 years ago. The hobby has changed drastically over the last decade. The frogs are easy to obtain, and there is soooo much info on keeping these precious little gems. Remember, everyone starts with no experience. Please fell free to email with any questions. No more food at home, yet still new food moths

We live in a 3500 square foot home and have been battling pantry moths since December 2021. Fortunately, the moths have been contained to our mud room which is a room between our attached garage and the rest of the house. We believe the source was birdseed that had been stored in the mud room. (I have no idea why someon put birdseed in that room!) Although we discovered the moths in December, I am pretty confident that they were there for at least a month or longer before we found them. We found moth pupae in the sealed glass Yankee candles! One blessing was that our actual pantry in the kitchen was free of moths, and remains free. Needless to say we still invested in hundreds of dollars of airtight containers to store our food. Now it is May 2022 and we still are finding moths. Not many though- we went over 3 weeks without seeing one. We thought we finally beat them. The two mud room doors remain closed at all times except when entering or exiting through to the garage. We removed most of the cabinets from the mud room when we did the initial clean out. The mud room is almost completely stripped. We contemplated taking off the trim that goes around the doors and the baseboards…. however we haven’t since there is caulk between the trim and the walls… It seems so ridiculous that an insect can be so disruptive…. So we will continue to monitor and kill on site…A couple of weeks ago, we had mulch delivered for the flower beds - to my disgust, the mulch had moths in them. Not the same as the pantry moths, but moths no less. We paid for 11 yards of mulch and the nursery threw in the moths for free, I suspect… I don’t think there is an answer for any of this. I am just sharing my story, to let others know, if you see a moth in your house, be vigilant - don’t ignore them.

Sounds like food poisoning. The flu shots are for the flu that produces a cough and chest problems. That flu could easily turn into pneumonia.

Could be FP--or a stomach virus. I had similar symptoms last week, but since Harry wasn't sick, and we'd eaten the same stuff, I figured it had to be a virus. It was gone in 24 hours so I guess that's just what it was.

Sure hope you feel better tomorrow, Schoolhouse!

There has been a stomach virus going around in my area. Hopefully none of us will get it.

It does sound like food poisoning, or maybe one of those quick stomach viruses. Either way, I hope it departs soon!

Thanks all. I'm feeling SO much better even as I type this. The tea, toast, maybe the aspirin, or the fact that at 7p I went back to bed and dozed off and on for two hours must be working. Or maybe just all your good wishes! Not going to tempt fate by eating yet, but will have another popsicle. It's funny because I normally can't even sleep in a lightweight nightgown but have been crawling into bed under a heavy comforter with a long-sleeved tshirt, capris, and slipper socks!

I agree, food poisoning sure seems to be the culprit. If I had to pick a day to be sick and in bed today was a good one. Rainy and cold outside. Thanks again.

Glad you're feeling better and I doubt it's the flu for several reasons. But don't be too quick to condemn a food. Often this comes from something as simple as not washing hands, not properly cleaning utensils, or other equally simple reasons, including dirty grocery carts transfer the grungies from person to person.

A concerted effort at frequently washing hands seems to have made a big improvement to my health over the past few decades. Doctors have said for a long time that hand washing does more than a flu shot. And after getting the flu after getting a flu shot last year confirms what I've thought and read about flu shots. They DO NOT prevent the flu. They CAN HELP in certain situations. And after the reaction I had to the shot to start with, I doubt I'll make that I'll get one again for a long time at least.

Whenever you're sick, do what you have to to stay hydrated. Last time I was in the hospital being hydrated they wouldn't even let me have water. Only ice chips so I'd take it more slowly. But the sink in the room, well, I had me some ice water. Wish I would have had some popcicles!

Actually it's not surprising that you're more chilly after not eating. Your body doesn't have the calories to burn to create more heat. One thing leads to another. These days I notice a chill more when I haven't eaten in a while.

Take nutrition how you can get it, keep hydrated, get plenty of rest and you'll be back in short order. Good luck.

I worked in the dietary dept of a large facility for 30yrs.and even tho I was only clerical I learned the importance of good hygiene, hand washing, sanitizing surfaces,ect. I pretty much have a good habit of hand washing. One thing I heard just recently is to be careful when handling your pet's food. It can be a big e-coli (sp?) risk. In the last year or so I've started feeding canned food to my cats and better pay more attention to how I deal with their food dishes and such.

Oh, and I got my first ever flu shot today at CVS. It normally cost $31 but my insurance paid for it. The handsome young pharmacist made it all the more pleasant too!
My one friend can not take the flu shot because she is allergic to eggs.

Thanks again for the well wishes. I'm feeling good today, but eating sensibly. Had scr.egg and toast for brkfst, then soup, tea, toast, gingerale this afternoon.

I had something similar last night. Started at about 7:45pm with the nausea, and when I went to bed I was up and down all night. Felt like everything I'd eaten the past few days came right up! Slept it off, and when I woke up this morning I had a tiny headache, that eventually went away.

Sounds like a 24 hour grip as they used to say which is a gastro intestional bug. I had it yesterday, was up all night throwing and then ejecting fire water, what the hell??? lol Any way I'm starting to think about toast so I know it's passing, no pun intended lol.
