I guess your post office doesn't have the self check thingy...I love that thing...especially when I was selling hot and heavy on Ebay...

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

I bought a scale and did all small things on the PC. The large things I took to UPS.

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

I live in a very small town and we actually have out own zip code and post office, which is about 50 yards away from my house...What is even better, my daughter is the Post Mistress and we never wait in line...We pick up our mail and on days when we don't feel like walking that long distance, DD will deliver it on her lunch hour.....Life is good in the small town!

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

I too love the self check thingy (thank for the technical name, Liz) I can go any day of the week and any time of the day to mail my things... Can't remember the last time I had to stand in line... lol

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

Oh, don't get me started on the post office! One or two windows open and of course 6 or 7 people leaning on the counter in the back. And they all have one speed.... postal.

With all the road rage out there, it's amazing it's only the postal workers who shoot up post offices. The patrons might have my sympathies if they did.

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

Our post office seems to be the lightest on Tuesday or late morning/early afternoon.

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

Closest po to me is always sooooo busy and lines. I go about 7 miles down the road to a smaller one and in and out!

Bad part: they close for lunch from 12-1

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

I live in a very small town so waiting in a line at the Post Office is foreign to me. My sister is the Post Master here. When I go pick up my mail (everyone in small towns have P.O. boxes) I'll stop in to chat with her. Rarely does she have more than one or two customers come in while I'm there.

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

When a customer at our PO complained about the slowness that an employee was exibiting the employee said "I get paid the same whether I go slow or fast."

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

We have to wait in lines in the grocery, in department stores, at the doctor's and dentist's offices. Why should the post office be any different?

My post office is great, even if I do have to stand in line sometimes. I mailed a box to my granddaughter at 4:30 PM on Monday, she received it on Tuesday, for $4. and change, across two states, from a small town in Wisconsin to the middle of Chicago. Amazing!

Do you think that if people saw you while you were working, they would think you were working as efficiently as possible, at top speed, at all times? And cheerfully, to boot?

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

Don't get me started on the post office. I have to ship books *EVERY* day and our post office is the poster child for inefficiency. You have 20 minute waits? You're one lucky dog. Entered the post office the other day at 12:10 and didn't leave until 1:05 pm.

One more reason I don't like "the big city." When I'm in and out of the post office in 20 minutes, that's a miracle.

Since this is part of my daily life, I've actually tried going at 8:30, 9:00, 9:30, 10:00, 10:30, etc. I've tried every time of the day and when it's slow, they take a clerk off the window and put him/her in the back until the line is out the door - again.

The idea of the post-office people becoming responsible for my health care makes me wanna curl up in a fetal position. They can't handle my parcels, how are they gonna manage with my spleen?

Shiver.

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

I live in a fairly small town, and I usually have to wait a bit. I always see the staff working though, and I never see anyone standing around.

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

We have the same problem in France. Do you think they have a secret international postal club with their own secret codes and handshakes?

 o
RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

I have never waited more than 5 minutes in line at the post office here. Usually it's about 3 minutes. I like going to the post office because a friend works at one of the windows. I also have the option of going to a drug or grocery store to mail things. When I lived in CA I hated going to the post office and always tried going to any other place where I could mail my packages.

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

I am used to waiting in lines everywhere I go. The workers in my local PO are friendly, polite and helpful, if not fast. The idea that I can send a birthday card 3,000 miles for 44 cents ! I used to work for the federal government, tho not for the Postal Service. It's hard to work for the public. Everyone complains, and there are occasional threats. Very few people bother to say "Thank You." Walk a mile in my shoes.

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

My post office is not so bad. They get to us as quick as they can and are very friendly. They have taken out all the do it yourself gadgets in the front of the PO, so the lines are longer now in the main office.
Like many said, it's just another line to stand in, and maybe I can start a chat with the person behind or in front of me to pass the time. It's nice and cool in there, so I really don't mind.

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

My post office used to be great. Then, they remodeled and decided to end the "Bank Lines" and have a line for each window. I am so upset. Their rational was that the grocery stores have a line at each register. I said that I could see how full people's carts are at the grocery store. They also don't have an express line. I am not happy.

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

Rosemary, if you ship on a daily basis the PO will pickup. All you have to do is call them, they will gladly help. I had a sales rep call on our business promoting this service.
Our PO gets swamped as the "snowbirds" return to FL for the winter. I've never seen a postal worker leaning on the counter chatting. Everyone is efficient, helpful and knows their job.

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

A trip to the post office might be more enjoyable if you can time your visit. At my small town post office, I have found that the hectic periods are:

1. Early morning when people are rushing to work and include a postal stop.

2. Noon hour. People rush out of the office to make a quick post office visit.

3. In the afternoon soon after factory workers finish their shift.

Less busy periods:

8:30 - 11:00 am
But if you wait too long after 8:30, you may see office workers trundling in batches of mail.

1:00 - 3:00 pm.

This works for me, but then I am retired. Before I retired, I too was one of the many who formed long lines at the post office.

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

It costs what - 44 cents to mail a letter? They'll deliver the stamps to my mailbox for free, and, like msmarion above said, they'll pick up any packages at the house! I think the post office is amazing!

Complaining about the post office is just some kind of dumb habit that got into our culture. Some people complain about everything, and if the postal service raises rates a penny, they'll complain about that!

 o
RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

I don't like standing in line but I have to say they are actually really effecient. You can send a piece of mail anywhere in the country for 44 cents and the delivery rate for the volume they do is outstanding. How many letters have you actually gotten lost in the mail? It can happen but rarely does. They deliver to every address in the country 6 days a week rain, shine, sleet, or snow. I really don't know of any other government agency other than military that is so effecient.

I don't like that they sell all the foo foo wrapping and shipping items in the front of P.O. I think they should stick with the basic shipping items and let some other store sell the fancy stuff. That is alot of inventory to invest in and I can't say I have ever seen people buying that stuff.

They do have the automated machine at our P.O. but I don't like using it unless in an emergency and I run out of stamps. Ours only dispenses stamps on sheets in qty. of 20. I like using rolls of stamps so usually buy 3 or 4 rolls at a time to limit my inside P.O. visits.

I don't work for the Post Office but think they do a great job overall considering the bulk of mail the move each day.

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

One thing that really slows things to a crawl is people who don't have their packages wrapped and/or forms filled out. I swear, some people act like its the first time they have mailed a package! Of course, it helps when the PO forms are readily available where they can be filled out. The PO finally stopped filling out passport applications any old time of day.

Off my soap box......

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

The employees at 'my' post office branch are great. Always a smile and friendly word. The times I've used the branch near my mom's house have been decidedly unfriendly.

I was a government employee for many years and know what it's like to be judged by the public. So I try to give the postal employees a break and behave pleasantly.

I do have one complaint. There are no chairs or benches so we're required to stand in line the whole time. I wish they had a number system and allowed us to sit while waiting. I'm on crutches and severe pain is part of my daily life. Standing is brutal.

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

We have a very small post office and I don't mind waiting.....it is one way to find out the town gossip and see old friends.

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

Our local PO's are fast, friendly and never busy, I'm lucky to have 3 within a 10 mile radius. I just wish they'd get on the same page for pricing, it seems too arbitrary to me. Mail the same thing at 3 different places on 3 different days and I'm liable to be charge differently on 3 or 4 of them, there's no continuity.

Stacy, will you explain this to me, I didn't get it - "he is orange" Was that another case of flying fingers? lol

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

I finally decided to open this post. It brings such a yucky feeling... that I thought I wouldn't do that.

But on the other hand, someone else might appreciate my tips.

When going to the post office bring something to do along.

Knitting, crocheting, a good book LOL.

Sometimes I just clean out my voice recorder while on the phone. I write lists, double check my organizer/calendar and sometimes I do one of those other things mentioned above.

:)

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

Luckily, I seldom, if ever, have to go into a PO.

I have stamps delivered to my mailbox. I use Click and Ship to print out my on line postage and to arrange package pick up at home. Printing parcel postage on line is a bit cheaper, and includes free Delivery Confirmation and the tracking info will be in the system if one also uses the scan form. Once the carrier scans the form, the tracking begins. I just printed postage this AM and will put it in the box for the carrier. If the box is too big for my mailbox, I just note that on the scheduled pick-up form, or put a note in the mailbox that there is a box at the back door for pick-up.

My PO employees and carriers are the greatest.

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

I went to my favorite little PO this morning, mailed off 11 big brown envelopes of fabrics all over the US, Canada and New Zealand. We laughed, talked, visited, dragged other customers into our conversations, showed off crafts, discussed craft ideas, etc and as I was leaving (all this was in the 10 minutes I was in there) I told the postmistress about this thread and told her just how lucky we are in our area to have her. She about cried, she was so touched.

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

I always go to the PO around 11:00 AM,and i very rarely have to wait in line, and if i do it's just 2 or 3 people ahead of me.But then again we have 4 PO's in our town.

RE: I hate standing in line at the post office

Oh, ME TOO! What p.o.'s me is to find 20+ people standing in line, 2 windows open, and one window gets closed so the clerk can go on break - I ALWAYS have to say something - surprised they don't toss me out! Where is their manager? Probably on break, too!!!!
