Unusual kitten

| I admit to being a "crazy cat lady". I often take unwanted cats...most often those that can't be adopted from the shelter.
I got three kittens last night from someone who didn't want them and was going to take them to Walmart to try and give them away. I don't trust what might have become of them, so I told her, I'd take them. I work with the humane society, so they will get them neutered/spayed for me.
One of the kittens, a calico, has blue eyes. That is kinda unusual, I think. I have never had a cat that wasn't white or Siamese that had blue eyes before, or even seen one, except in a book.
I think I will name her Crystal.

Beautiful kitties, and so lucky to be taken in by someone with a good heart. Will the irresponsible woman who gave them to you at least have the parents spayed/neutered?

Crystal is a good name for her! Is she really a calico? I thought calicos were torties with some white and a little orange. I guess there's all kinds. One of my favorite cats ever was Morgan, whom we figured must be half Siamese and half black & white. He had beautiful blue eyes. You captured Crystal's so well. I'll bet you didn't use flash. Morgie's eyes turned bright red if we flashed him.

More information than you probably wanted to know: "To be considererd calico cat, a cat must be tri-colored, with patches of white, red or orange, and black fur. Some breeds have rules as to what percentage of the cat's fur must be white for it to be called a calico cat. Calico cats are nearly always female. To be a calico cat, the kitten must have an X chromosome that has the orange color and an X chromosome that has the black color. A calico cat has sections of different colors in its fur. Usually the calicos with more white fur also have larger and more distinct patches of color. If the orange and black fur is mixed, the cat is called a tortoiseshell. Tortoiseshell cats, or "torties," as they are commonly known, have little or no white fur. A variation on the usual calico color pattern is the "dilute" or "pastel" calico cat. This type of calico cat gets its name from the fact that its color pattern is a "diluted" or "pastel" version of the typical colors. A dilute or pastel calico cat has a pattern of buff or cream instead of orange and "blue", a slate gray color, instead of black."

I hope so. She can get the mother spayed for free if she will say that she is feral. I took her last 3 kittens too, and was able to find homes for two of them.

I knew all of that...but wonder what you would call a tabby, white and orange cat? Technically that would be a calico of some sort, wouldn't it? They are always females too.

youre right it is rare. some idiot dropped us off a show cat..not gave it to us just put it at the top of the driveway in freezing weather..shes gorgeous long haired and her colors run together but are seperated if you can understand that. her eyes are 2 different colors too. really odd. shes also loveable as heck lol. we also have a feral cat with messed up ears wish i could get a pix for you but hes grey and white hes huge and whenever he sees me with my adoptive dog he runs and clings too me..and hes got claws lol. above dog is very jealous lol. we have over 70. you are doing a wonderful thing. many thanks to you for that.

A calico cat is not just a tri-color cat, it is a white cat with orange and black spots. I had one years ago.

very sweet of you to take the kittens, the blue eye one is very pretty and the name fits! You are very kind hearted to take them! |

| You shouldn't have any trouble finding homes for those pretty cats. Any cat lover would want Crystal! Here's Lottie. 15-16 years ago a friend called and told me she had a stray calico kitten that needed a home. She was neither a calico nor a kitten! She was about 1-2 years old when I got her. Her age is showing, (just like mine) but she is the best cat I've ever had. She is so smart it is unbelievable. So she is not a calico, just a tabby?

I will have to post a pic of the two tabbies that the Humane Society gave me a week or so ago. They are almost adults but had been there in a cage since they were kittens...no one adopted them. They are beautiful cats....but most people want kittens and they just got passed over.

I have a beautiful dilute tortie but from the above description, she may really be a delute calico. Either way, she is beautiful and petite too.

You are a good soul Marilyn....They are all just precious...PuddyKitty and I both thank you...

Marilyn, I am sure you know this, but just in case, have Crystals hearing checked. A great many blue eyed cats are deaf. It is a recissive gene and shows in cats that have two blue eyes. That should not stop her from having a loving home if she is kept indoors.

You're right pkramer. it is common in dogs too, especially if they have a lot of white on their heads, like catahoulas and especially in dalmatians.
RE: Unusual kitten

Sue, your beautiful cat is a "torbie", a combination of tortoiseshell & tabby.
