... so I expect she'll be on tenterhooks for at least most of a week.

A co-worker got a BIG win on one of the $10 tickets. We all got free lunch that day. It's fun to be nice.

That was nice of both of you. Too many people have a hard time being genuinely happy for another person, and it was nice of her to buy your ticket. :)

Juellie, it was a scratch ticket. I scratched it late last nite......no winnings. But the gesture was very nice!

The reason for the season.

I think you're misreading the situation.

In casinos, I've seen people spend hours gambling in one spot (at take your choice - a crap table, a blackjack table, roulette, etc) with nary a crumb given to dealers, cocktail servers, etc. It all changes when someone wins a big payoff, because they're suddenly everyone's favorite uncle (seems to be a male thing). Big tips for the dealers and cocktail servers, drinks for the table, whatever. Instant generosity after a gambling win is a way of celebrating by boasting and gloating. It's not kindness, it's really done for themselves rather than for others.

That's what's behind a lottery winner buying someone else a lottery ticket or taking co-workers to lunch after a payoff, it's a way of boasting.

Almost all gamblers lose on a net basis. If they refrained from the activity, they'd have more to share with others in sincere acts of "generosity".

Snidely, she did not look at all like the type of person who would woo friends with a dinner etc. She looked like she will use the money wisely (Christmas gifts for the family). She pulled out her wallet to put her money in, and commented that she needed to buy a new one (part of it was broken and torn).

She was genuine in buying me my ticket and wishing me a Merry Christmas.

What a heartfelt event! It is so much fun to "pay it forward". Not that I am wealthy, but I used to live in a military town and had opportunities to pay for the meals for the military. I think it did me more good than it did for them. There are so many ways we can do little acts of kindness..pay for someone's groceries, buy someone's tank of gasoline, pay for the next car's purchases at a fast food drive-in, adopt a family for Christmas, take canned food every month to your local food bank, donate coats for the winter coat drive, put mittens and gloves on the mitten tree for school children, take a meal to the elderly, treat your coffee group with donuts, etc. Giving feels so good!...and I'll bet you will never miss it in a year. Try it!

What a nice thing for that person to do. I have a similar story. Several years ago a woman was in front of me at the grocery store. She was buying several of the small flower bouquets. When I remarked that she was going to make someone happy, she laughed, and told me that she was going to be a presenter at a workshop that day. After checking out, she handed one of them to me! And yes, it made me happy that day.

I don't think its boasting at all. Just a kind person doing a lovely gesture to someone. whether or not they know the person. Any time of year. I would have done the same thing. I rarely buy a ticket but when I do its for the fun of it. I might win or usually I don't but I had a fun time dreaming of what I would do with my winnings. All my family would get a little something. Some more than others.
