Soft Fine Hair vs Grizzled Hair

I don't know what to do. All of my life my hair has been soft to the touch with a soft wave. Now, it seems to have happened overnight, it is "grizzled" and does not feel soft and has lost nearly all of it's wave. I don't like the look or feel of it.

Are there any recommendations for the use of some kind of treatment for this old-age hair?

What meds are you taking? Mine is affected by my high blood pressure meds. Also water and certain shampoos make it dry.

Exactly what I was going to ask, are you on any new meds or changed meds. That can do it quickly. Have you changed your shampoo and conditioner?
Did you cut your hair much shorter than it was? All of the above mentioned definitely affect my hair. Certain of my meds cause my hair to fall off and be brittle.
You can try using some coconut oil for your hair it's a good natural conditioner.

The one I keep going back to is one they only sell at Walmart in a white can that says PROFESSIONAL across the side and they sell two different ones but the one I like is the one that says it's like Vavoom. I have not tried the other one. I think this one is very popular because they are sold out many times. I have extremely fine limp medium length hair and it holds really well without spraying out of the can so hard it blows my style away which many canned hair sprays will do. Everything else I've liked has been discontinued...if I had to buy something else I would buy Big Sexy Hair spray and play harder I believe is the one. The actual Matrix Vavoom is not any good, but it's generic version from Wally's is awesome!

A while ago, I picked up the trial sizes of the Clear Scalp "nourishing" shampoo and conditioner. I admit that I used the 2 only once -- I didn't like the way my hair felt, and with my hair not as thick as it once was, I think I probably saw a lot more hair in the drain cover than I wanted to. I'll try it another time or two before I decide whether to toss them. As for squeaky hair, I think there's still a debate over whether that's stripping too much beneficial stuff from the hair. I know hair is dead, but ... Now, Moroccan oil is the "in" thing for shampoos and styling products to add. I do want to try one just to feel my hair after that, but I'll only buy trial sizes for this type of stuff. WalMart had some brand -- Pantene, I think -- in a huge bottle -- way too much shampoo. Hate feeling stuck with a huge bottle.

I think your colorist is completely out of line and I would go somewhere else. My hairdresser and I just celebrated our 20th anniversary - I've followed her from salon to salon until she finally opened her own place. I started getting white hair in high school and I've been completely white for many years (think Barbara Bush, the elder white) . To avoid the skunk stripe I get my color every three weeks. I'm not interested in doing it myself so I just pay. Over the years I've watched my hairdresser handle all kinds of customers and without fail - if the client is unhappy she'll offer to re-do the color. There are times when I think the client is too demanding and insisting that the end result isn't what she asked her. Yet Donna has always tried to make the customer happy - sometimes she just adds a toner which subdues the color. Perhaps it isn't as dark as you thought - after all you didn't notice it until your DH mentioned it. In any case you shouldn't have to be lectured by the colorist. As others mentioned if you do color your hair then you need to use a shampoo and conditioner that's made for color treated hair.

I think, like so many things in life, what will work well for one person is a disaster for someone else I have very fine, thin, frizzy hair. Back when I tried Wen, I was also exercising hard every day - and I sweat like a pig. :-) Wen was a fiasco in my hair. First of all, I second the comment above about it never feeling clean. My scalp sweats, and the Wen just never seemed to get the sweat off the way regular products do. My scalp itched like crazy. What made me finally give it up though was that my hair got progressively more limp and yet more frizzy with each passing day. I hung in there for a while and tried everything I could think of - more product, less product, leaving it on longer, rinsing it off quickly. Didn't matter, Wen and my hair were not meant to be. I was turning into Roseann Roseannadanna on the stuff. Wasn't the look I was after. Glad people out there like it, but it never worked for me. I understand how it may clog pores or whatnot, the stuff felt heavy to me in my hair - which is maybe why my fine, limp hair just kept getting more and more limp, all the while fanning out like a peacock strutting its stuff.

Mine gets grizzled too. I never suspected it could be caused by my medication. I thought it was the gray hair or the shampoo. I have learned something.I need to talk to my hair stylist about. Hopefully she can help me. Thanks for asking this question.

If your hair has turned gray, even partially, then the change in texture is because gray hair has an extra horny layer and can appear grizzled or unruly. I explained this to one of my older clients when I had a salon and she replied "well for God's sake, don't tell Henry." I roared.

I'm the same as you, walnutcreek..my hair is straight, fine, blond and thinning...then this grey is creeping around my temples...Grizzled is a good word for it! I'm 67 so I guess I should be expecting grey by now although I don't like the texture..

I have been fighting with my hair for years.... having had broomstick straight, thick and smooth hair. Now it is white (I like the color) straight and thinning, but always feels like it has split ends and dry. Coconut oil helps, but a really good haircut...and shorter... is the best remedy. BTW...nearing 80. Nanny

PS...Horny is an interesting way to describe it!LOL

Marie: I did start taking a new blood pressure medicine about 8 months ago.

Raven: In addition to the blood pressure medicine, I take Pradaxa (for years since it came out), digoxin, a thyroid med (can't remember the name of it), Align, which is new, per my doctor for a stomach issue, vitamins magnesium, D3, and calcium. Haven't had my hair cut, but will do so next week.

Yaya: I have had gray hair for years, and it has never affected my hair in previous years. It remained soft, silky, and wavy.

Grand, Raven and Nanny: I am going to talk to my hair stylist next week and ask her about using the coconut oil or anything else she recommends.

Peke: I will let you all know what my stylist recommends. And, I don't like it either, Peke.

You could try using a flat iron to smooth that frizzy hair shaft. You could have your stylist show you how.

My hair is definitely not the same hair as I once had. Certainly your medications could cause it, hormones can affect your hair too. I can hold my hair out and see frizzy hairs all over my head. I did not have those years ago. One thing that I did find that was drying my hair out was a leave in conditioner/detangler/heat protector. Though it did a great job taking out the tangles, it was really damaging my hair. Since I stopped using it, my hair has become much less damaged on the ends.

I have started using the flat iron and that makes my hair look stylish and healthy and also shiny. Be careful to not have the temp very high for your fine hair though!

My hair has gotten dry and looks and feels like straw when I get up in the morning and I thought it had gotten thin. Not a pretty sight!

Because of all the health problems I've dealt with this past year, I haven't had the time or ambition to do anything about it.

Until this week. I made an appointment for a perm and asked if meds could have any thing to do with that. She said absolutely. (I had made a note to ask my doctor when I see him again in January.) I'm taking a blood pressure pill, a blood thinner, and the hormone pill, all new to me. I was wrong about the thinning; she remarked as she was cutting my hair that it is definitely not thin, but still very thick! Yay! She gave me a good haircut so I still have some fullness, and a soft perm, It looks good, but of course I can never make it look that good. I'm going to try the coconut oil and see if that helps.
