Any "Car Talk" fans here? R.I.P. Tom Magliozzi.

I was sorry to see that Tom Magliozzi, who did NPR's "Car Talk" radio show with his brother, Ray, died this week at age 77. They said he had Alzheimer's, which I guess explains why they stopped taping new shows awhile back. It must have been so hard for Ray and their family to see Tom decline like that.

I was a fan of the show. I'm an admitted car person, but the main reason I loved it was the brothers' humor, which they clearly enjoyed every bit as much as their listeners did. Tom's laugh was incredibly infectious. They were smart--both MIT graduates--and that showed too.

Yesterday I read about his passing and was very sad about it. I didn't listen to the radio show, but I did like to read their column in the newspaper.

Hey-J it was ment to be funny, at the time we had just lost the bid on a dream home, it had a 20,000 dollar 15 foot koi pond/ water fall out in front that wrapped 2/3 ways around the house and landscaping to die for! it was decorated very nice inside with tons of extras. so of course seeing my new backyard I was all geared up to make it just as nice, I'm great with money and ideas, but $25 even to me was a joke, I was begining to wonder if something was wrong with my husbands head! Mice Said" I can actually see potential in your backyard" Of course you do Mick, your probably a gardening freak, so any lot of dirt has potential, I'm sure in your caring hands it would!!! lindac, I got sick and could not get out of bed for four months due to Exhaustion and sickness have no fear it was probably me trying to kill my self after a 64 hour week whipping that baby into shape, ok trying, and if you look there is a shovel and a rake leaning on the wooden fence:) I wished I lived by you, I would love a truck load of plants, that really nice to share your love of gardening like you do, someday I hope to be able to do that, I could of gave away a truck load of dandelions:P P.s that not rudbekia it's dandelion, but that is a climbing rose. Jel and everyone who had high hopes for the outhouse, I am sad to say may he R.I.P as I tore him down and used him to patch my fence, if I had known he had so many online friend who where hoping to see him in better days, and at hoildays with a Santa Claus, maybe fall with pumpkins and mums growing out the seat hole and corn stalks framing up the opening. I am truely sorry.:(

Cathy-- no, this is the first time I've heard the term, but not the first time I've heard of the system. I just never knew what it was called. And if it's a short sale, it's probably a great deal. Bigtime short sale. For the condition it's in right now, the offer was for about 1/3 of the full value. To that, right off the bat, we'll be adding quite a bit of upgrades, including all new replacement windows throughout the house, a brand new heating system, and blown in insulation, which will only add to the value, making it an even better deal. We'll see. I still haven't heard from the bank yet, which means they didn't take it as a joke and refuse it right off. We'll see. As for the bathroom, I'm not sure what we're going to do. Personally, I'd prefer to do all new fixtures, and really fire it up. But my wife is another one who likes the vintage fixtures, so I may be overruled. :-) Gotta keep Momma happy!! One thing is for certain-- the tub will lose the showerhead, and a separate shower will be built.

I forgot about Life and The Office. Sorry to hear Life was cancelled. I also like The Beast with Patrick Swayze. I guess I like cop shows. I hate any show that deals with hospitals. I want to avoid them...not drag myself into them...even for an attempt at entertainment. I did watch House a few times and it was okay. I never seen The Sopranos when it was on it's run because I didn't have HBO, but I started watching it on Netflix and went through all 6 seasons last year. Great show. Duane

Hi sleeperblues, I love NPR with all my heart, all my soul and all my might! I listen to it every day. It is on my car radio and on every radio I have in the house. I have listened to NPR so exclusivly for the past 25 years that I have no idea what other radio stations are out there or what they have to offer. Where would I be without a Prairie Home Companion? Our current, local NPR, is a talk and information format. Morning Addition, Diane Rehm, Fresh Air, Talk of the Nation and others during the week with great entertainment as well as informational shows, Car Talk, Wait, wait don't tell Me, etc. on the weekends. We have been members for years and I even listen during the pledge drives. When we lived in CT we had a choice of 2 NPR stations, one being mostly a music format. I liked them both. I would be lost and ill informed without it. sooey

I listen to their show almost every Saturday. I was shocked to learn that Tom had died. Even with "rerunning" the old shows, it is always entertaining. I was surprised that they had stopped producing new shows 2 years ago. It doesn't seem that long ago.

They were a class and funny act. He will be missed.

Huge fan here, for years. I was sad to hear of his passing but have been expecting bad news. 'Click and Clack, the Tappet brothers' were wonderfully funny and very unique.

Thanks for posting, Alisande...when I heard the news yesterday, I was so saddened.

Listened to it on Sat morning. They make me laugh even tho I'm not a car person. The archived shows will apparently continue to air. Tom will be missed, I'm sure.

I've been listening to that show for years because my husband is a car person. I would even listen to it when I wasn't with him because they were so funny. Both were very sharp witted and quick with the comeback. So sorry to hear of Tom's passing. I feel so bad for Ray, I'm guessing they were very close. Although with Alzheimer's, perhaps their relationship had changed. So sad.

I was a shop writer for 9 years, putting myself through college and making a good living too....loved their show! I'd lost touch....not listened to them in years....

So sad to hear this. What a HUGE loss......

Smart, funny show. I always enjoyed it. They were so witty but knew a lot about car repair and operation. Alzheimers, it's so evil.
