I'm baking today, what are you doing?

I made 2 loaves of bread this morning.....I tried a new recipe. It's an easy bread recipe, with faster rising. Tami_Ohio posted the recipe on the cooking forum.

I also have an apple pie in the oven. I bought a pastry mat a couple of weeks ago and it makes pastry rolling a breeze.

I also have sheets out on the balcony on our indoor clothes rack. They're blowing nicely in the cold breeze.

The cats are drugged out on catnip, flaked out on the livingroom floor.

I'm going to make some chicken in the oven, and will probably roast some brussels sprouts as well.

Biggest effort was raking, mowing and blowing leaves (again). Enough of that crappy season chore. Brain fart cleaned the oven door in & out. Ha. Too much kitchen time yesterday, so today is all trivial stuff. The clock is ticking to pick up an Italian Beef for supper (free). A batch of Kahlua is chilling for evening sipping. A good weekend.

It's a beautiful day! We both slept in because he went fishing last night and I stayed up waiting until he got home, safe and sound. We've been raking, trimming, washing windows, laundry, changing the sheets.....such a day inspires activity.

Paco, the little cat boy, thinks that it's a purrfect day to keep track of the sunbeams all day long, moving all around the house to find the best sunbathing opportunities.

Oh thanks, everyone. Your comments are so sweet. We are so fortunate to have a great DS. Hate to compare my kids, although it can be hard not to (!), but after having such a rocky road with our other DS, we appreciate these typical teenage experiences with younger DS and especially appreciate that he has been an amazingly easy child his whole life. And he has made such smart choices in his life -- particularly the friends he spends his time with. These are funny, hardworking, smart kids who don't drink, do drugs, or other stupid things that so many kids are doing. When DS was a freshman, we talked about drinking and drugs and what groups of kids were doing what, and he said to me "I'm going to surround myself with people who are good for my education." And he really has done that. Don't know where he came from...DH and I were not that smart about life at that age! Martinca, his lucky GF is second row of the pyramid, last one on the right. (She's also next to him in the pic below, wearing a black sweatshirt.) They have a nice relationship. They have been part of the same group of friends since the beginning of high school and only started dating after being friends for two years. Now they've been "together" for almost a year. One final pic that DH took with his fancy camera. I love this one. I told DS it looks like the J Crew catalog. BTW love the nationally ranked mom comment. I'm gonna use that. To describe myself to my kids!

Although it seems like a forgiving dough - I can taste that I cheated on the overnight ferment. Sorry your casserole dishes aren't big enough. I bake in a toaster oven so when my bread rises it burns on top. Another reason P a L'A is good - it spreads out more than up. I brush the bread with some slightly salty water right before it goes in the oven. But I lose that lovely floury rustic surface. Do you have a pizza stone? That helped me get a better crust back when I last had an oven - now I use it in my grill to make pitas. Also I read somewhere or another about using a SS restaurant dish lid as a cloche though I've never seen one large enough. I am currently jealously watching a neighbor build a stone wood-fired bread oven by his pond - the ultimate bread oven. He says he will advise me when I am ready to build one - and I definitely do not lack for rocks. However right now my 'yard' is festooned with logs, brush and firewood piles. Hopefully in the near future the logs will become a woodshed and I can move the firewood inside. Then maybe a bread oven - which will entail moving rocks. I'm tired just thinking about it all. Making some tea and toast and taking a nap.

so funny I opened this as baking was finishing on the biggest, prettiest zucchini/ricotta pie I had ever baked, Took it out of the oven and as I was placing it on the cooling rack, it slid right off the island with a big splat, all over the family room floor, and the dog, she's in heaven now as she licks it and hubby is running around the house trying so hard to help clean, but he has no idea what to do next. and I'm stuck thinking of what else to make without going to the store again, I hate when stuff like this happens,which luckily is rarely.. well onto the other baking, cinnamon rolls, and the crepe_cake, The crepes turned out great, and the filling is made, just have to stack and glaze. I hope I only have one baking accident today. Happy Baking everyone!!

I had quite a few radishes and beans, plus multitudes of squash and tomatoes come up volunteer in my garden from last year ... when Conrad the landlord tilled last week, I begged him to skip some of the tomatoes, lest I not have enough. He said that there were plenty. I transplanted quite a few into rows on the night before last, just before dark, and watered them. Didn't go out early yesterday to water them, did some cultivating and weeding in the other garden, some of them were looking rather peaked when I arrived a while before lunch on that hot day. Watered them, stuck some boxes over a few to shade them and they perked up some. As I weeded the cantaloupe, put some lamb's quarters - a full tray that in which tomatoes come to the stores - and was sad that there appear to be no cantaloupe sprouted in half of the row. Friend from the investment group called to say to be at his place at five to six to go to the meeting, and he'd like some straw for his garden, so I took him two main bales and a couple of small ones ... he was surprised that I could get all four into my little car (and without one in the front seat) and I had some other things, plus the tray of greens to share ... I said that when one packs for overseas, the rules deal with not just weight, but volume, as well. We picked up the gal who lives near him on the way to the meeting, and did some shopping along the way - I got some cashews and some choc. chips to pass around, which I did ... but forgot the greens, sitting in the corner, until after the break-up and many had left. One guy took some at the after-meeting in the coffee shop. I was to go out to lunch today, had asked a friend who was busy, and called another a couple of times, and had thought to ask Lori en route last night whether she'd like to go ... but forgot that, too. This morning I did some hoeing, watered the tomatoes - I think that all but possibly a couple will survive, and cleaned the car (straw in a car is messy), as I planned to visit Lori's house to see whether she might be interested to share lunch. There's a group at the church that I attended as a child that used to be called the "Senior Men's Coffee Hour" that meets Thursdays through fall, winter and spring. Then they changed their name to "ROMEO"s - Retired Old Men Eating Out, and my suggestion that, as we are mainly drinking, it should be called "ROMDO" - Retired Old Men Drinking Out went over like a ton of lead bricks. Could it be the old Methodist heritage, which that congregation had been prior to the formation of The United Church of Canada in 1925, four years before my birth? Surely not. Anyway, at their final meeting in the spring, they all invite their wives out for lunch at a nearby restaurant, and today noon was the day. Last night when we arrived at Lori's door, I ran to ring her bell, then ran back to the car to move some of my stuff from the front to the back seat ... and she teased me about being like a kid that rings one's bell and runs away. This morning, when I rang Lori's bell ... no answer. Guess she was away (or working - she works part-time ... and makes money on the stock market). The lunch was lovely - I had pickerel - and some teased me about the lack of a companion. So - now I'm on the internet, talking to you guys ... and waiting for my ten-minute warning dialogue box to show up ... it did, while I'd been typing this, and this is the second time of typing it. So, I'll have to shut up. Imagine that. Have yourselves a lovely day, everyone. ole joyful

Great minds think alike! It's so cold that I set out some frozen brussels' sprouts to broil! That will make the kitchen cozy. Tomorrow I plan to run the oven's self-cleaning feature for the same reason.

Friday I roasted a half of a leg of lamb I had downstairs in the freezer. Best lamb I've ever roasted; there was nothing in the pan with it and just a rubbing of fresh crushed garlic, olive oil, cracked pepper, and salt on it.

I kept the oven slow, 325 degrees, and checked it with the meat thermometer. Took it out at 135 degrees, let it set a while and then sliced it. Oh yumm. Perfection.

I'm packaging it into 1 lb. bundles and freezing it for soup, "lamb and potatoes," or a ragout after DH gets home from the elk hunt.

It's so good I may set the other half out, too. Lamb and potatoes, Spanish style, or lamb stews are my very favorites!

Not much. I'm making Raven's crusty bread but that doesn't count for anything because it's so darn easy. I will be doing some laundry today. Haven't even unpacked my suitcase from our trip last week. (Been home since Friday) I think I might do a little work on my closet, also. I did start switching around but have lots more to do.

Church ... including memorial for a guy who was in Sunday school with me and whose family chose no funeral and no memorial ... born before the United Church of Canada was formed from about 70% of the Presbyterians, the Methodists and the Congregationalists in 1925 ... which I missed by 4 years.

Was bound for the second church, for coffee hour, thought I'd missed most of the veteran's remembrance at the cenotaph, but saw the parade coming, so went there, then to the legion hall for refreshments and had a visit with a local Member of Parliament whom I know.

And now am here yakking to you folks - city central library open for a while on Sun. afternoons Oct. - May or so.

I've spent the last 3 days slowly cleaning, and I just keep finding things to clean! The whole house needs a good deep clean. I'm waiting on my husband to let me know when he and his friends will be heading over from shooting trap and having lunch. I'll have cold drinks and snack for them while they hangout. I might make some quick breads to take into work this week, and get some of my cupboard cleared out.

Chilly day here. Did some cleanup on my weaving supplies area and painted a small table there. Spent 30 min. on the Nordic Track. Ate a quick lunch and have been outdoors doing garden cleanup. Still debating what I'll make for dinner, but I will definitely try something new and the oven will definitely be on! :O)

At last the low humidity has passed and my flaky skin is healing. A cool moist breeze sure is helping. Today I'm doing small tidy ups-you know, the little things you keep meaning to get to. Something's wrong with my leg and with that and the broken toe I thought I'd ask about them in a separate thread.

Baking sounds lovely. Your bread looks delicious.
I am totally redecorating my bedroom. Been working on it a couple of weeks now and am finally done removing things. I took off the wallpaper and took up the 25 year old carpeting and pad. Going to paint the walls and put down plank flooring with an area rug. Today I primed the walls. My first time painting alone. It wasn't too bad though. My husband always did the roller and I would cut in the edges.

Rose, how exciting to do a bedroom rejuvenation! It'll feel like a brand new haven when you're all finished. I enjoy prepping and painting....bedrooms are the most fun, I think.

I spent this morning reading the last in the Maze Runner book series. Played some on-line games, put away yesterday's white-clothes laundry that was still in the dryer, then met Alex (my son) for a movie. We saw Interstellar. Good movie. He took off as soon as the movie ended, meeting a study group that he was late for because of the movie. Came home and ate a homemade naked burrito. Started a new book, Dr. Ben Carson's "America the Beautiful". Bought it a few months ago and only now starting it.

Have to work tomorrow, so I got some things ready for it...water, a coffee mug to heat water for instant coffee. I missed three days last week due to an eyelid infection. On antibiotics. Just hope I have the time to stop and put them in every 4 hours.

I have been knitting booties for my son's soon to be nephew while watching reruns of Downton Abbey. Next, I am going to wash the patio windows before dark. It rained last week, and we needed it, but I had just washed the windows that morning! Washing windows is my version of a Rain Dance!

I went to church. After the service, most of us went to the basement for a delicious lasagna lunch. From there to the women's basketball game with a group of friends. A very enjoyable Sunday. Read the 2 Sunday papers after I got home.

I went for a nice brisk walk this morning (1 1/2 hours) and got really chilled. A hot shower warmed me up. I am also doing research for our local history society of a house at which several hundred seances took place early in the 1900s. The family who lived there was headed by a respected doctor who initiated the psychical researches, as he called them. There eventually was world-wide interest in the phenomena displayed during the seances, including photographs of strange appearances and table tilting spelling out messages. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was one visitor to the home who experienced a seance. The gist of this all was communicating with people "who had passed to the other side." All phenomena were verified by notable community members and affidavits signed as to the authenticity of photographs, etc.

I have vowed to bake all of my favorite cookies this year, so today I went shopping and bought all the ingredients. Then this evening, I rode my horse. I have made myself a promise that I would ride her every day for a year, It was almost dark when I got her saddled but I rode for a few minutes anyway....plan to ride a lot earlier tomorrow.

I don't believe it at all, Snidley. The phenomena were verified by respected community members is what the voluminous records tell us. However, from our stance today, we don't know how rigorous the observations were, whether the observers were unbiased and whether modern scientific methods were used. From their appearance, it's not hard to conclude that the photographs were altered.

It's interesting that this seemed to be a time of detecting the supernatural and "seeing the formerly unseen," such as the apparently real 1917 Cottingley Fairies photographs which Sir Arthur Conan Doyle accepted as genuine. The women who as young girls took the photographs have now confessed that they are fake.

marilyn_c, baking your favorite cookies is a great idea -- which ones? But riding the horse every day for a year might be a tough promise to keep..... why put so much stress on yourself?

Yesterday....I finished the basement demo in the rental. I tore out the rest of the firing strips and loaded them in the truck with a few ceilng tiles and hauled them to a dumpster....with the dumpster owners permission.

Then shopped for Bali mini blind mounting brackets, they came with the wrong ones. Grrrrr...... then DH used the basement bathroom....and it almost over flowed....got online and researched Roto Rooter ....

For lunch we went to a "Shop and Save" grocery store.....all Spanish patrons and "things" for sale....picked up lunch....

For dinner, made baked potato wedges to go with the fish sticks. Threw Temtation Tumblers for the cat to entertain the bored kitty that was left at home all alone aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall day......lol Then took a loooooooooooooong bath....

The day before I was shopping @ The Restore....and a board fell on my forehead....left a knot the size of an egg & dark circles under my eyes....now it's black & blue...but almost gone....YAY! Haven't gotton hurt working, but I got nailed shopping....lol
