I'm hardly in a constant state of irk. I'm a happy, easy-going person who occasionally gets "irked" by some things. Not unlike most, I'd guess.

I'll stop now, so that I don't continue to give the wrong impression about myself!

I will be permanently irked and on my soap box about the word "gifted", That word irks me, I can't stand to hear it or to see it. It is not a word. You don't "gift" someone, you "give" or "present" someone with something.

It's hard to believe that the book linked below has been out over 15 years. It contains clear thoughts and common sense wisdom to deal with the world and the people in it. Simple ideas that too many people don't come up with on their own.

It's true that some people are prone to doing things that are stupid, annoying or both. I ignore it, it never bothers me. It's an easy solution.

And there, from Snidely, is the predicted "why are you worried about such small things" response. I thought I'd made it clear that these are not big things. You're trying to tell us that nothing ever irks you, Snidely? Must be nice to live in your world.

Not a major, or even, I guess, much of a minor "irk", but more a bit of a wry comment on some of our ways of doing things.

This was brought to the fore by the comment about "turkey day" (made, sometimes, by "turkeys"?) which loses the original impetus on the day and its meaning of giving thanks for our many blessings .

Christians are a bit of a strange lot ... they tell of Christmas being a celebration of Christ's birthday ...

... but they've rearranged things to work out a system that they're the ones who get the presents.

The answer to that is mostly yes. Rarely, bordering on never.

Take a look at the book, it's very helpful. Unless you like getting annoyed, in which case, don't.

I hate vegetables being "veggies". It sounds so infantile.

I dislike the Arby's ads lately, with the big old tough guy voice.

It irks me that people can't, or won't, return your calls that are urgent. I'm speaking of plumbers, electricians, etc. For heavens sake, they all have cell phones so why not a simple return call?

Susie, yes you should absolutely post what is on your mind. That is what this forum is for. Yes, there are more important things to think about, but that goes without saying.

It is always interesting to me that some people will answer a thread and make you feel like you shouldn't have posted and as if you are bothering them. Please ignore those people.

I think we need to review the purpose of the KT. Maybe I'm wrong but my interpretation is that you should be able to bring any topic to the table.

I must admit, I don't like giving great attention to what irks me, I'd rather TRY to magnify the things I'm grateful for. That being said, people who say nothing irks them are either in denial, on major happy pills or are perfect. Everyone gets irked by something!!

I usually leave it to others to contribute the "I agree with you" responses to someone's thread, those are ok but don't make for much of a discussion. I post when I have a different opinion,

Irks, pet peeves and the like aren't worth anyone's time or energy to react to or think about.

I can't stand Hubby, Hubs, etc. Veggies-yep, might as well say fruities too. Bet that's next ! I rather like the irks, bugs and vent threads-gives me a chance to vent too !

Drivers in big pickup trucks who coming zooming up behind me, trying to push me out of the line of traffic that I am keeping up with, also irk me.

I also dislike the term "sammies" for sandwich. I can tolerate it from a kid, but not a grown up.

Snidely, I think you did misunderstand. This thread wasn't about agreeing or disagreeing. Susie posted her feelings, venting about something that bothered her.
She didn't ask for our opinion to agree or disagree.
It did get others to thinking and then sharing their thoughts on what irks them.
That is the purpose of this thread.

Just be grateful that I don't start a celebs without makeup thread ! One of my guilty pleasures is snickering meanly at those befores and afters. Well, at least I admit it !

While we are discussing abbreviations or shortened words that irk us, I'll add that I don't understand the whole DH, DS, DSIL thing. Why can't we just say husband, son (or sister), etc.? Are they truly always dear? Sometimes, aren't they the very things that irk us? :-)

And, I agree, please don't talk to me about taters, sammies, veggies, etc. Am I two years old? No? Then, please don't use baby talk.

It's probably the one word that I abbreviate, not out of a predilection for baby talk, but out of lifelong habit. And I'll continue to do it, so to those who are offended or irked by veggies.....TOUGH! Lolol

False eyelashes!!! Not on me or anyone I know personally, but just about every female on TV lately. They're too long and too black and too fake. I found them distracting on Katherine Heigl last night.

It also irks me to see them on models in mascara ads. We're supposed to believe the mascara product will give us long, thick eyelashes like the (false) ones in the photo. Yeah, right.

Not crazy about "veggies," but I'm even less fond of "crispy." The word used to be "crisp." I hope we're not someday expected to say "limpy." LOL

I remember years ago the writer Peg Bracken was adamantly opposed to "crispy," and had quite a bit to say about it.

I won't get started on grammatical errors! I made one here recently, but was too lazy to go back and edit it.

I have an irk: when an ad or a newspaper story gives the date as November 18th, 2014. The date is NOT November 18th - it is November 18. Check the calendar, people!

I love threads such as this one! It's so nice to know that I'm not the only one that gets irked by "small stuff". Poor grammar is a pet peeve of mine. The misuse of "me" and "I" is widespread, although it is so simple. ["Me and Joe are going." As if you would say "Me am going."] And when did "my's" become a word? ["It was his and my's idea."] I even hear these mistakes on TV shows and in movies. Makes me wonder what the editorial staff does!

I am irked by people in grocery stores who open the doors to glass frozen food cases and stand there looking at the food. The purpose of the glass door is to enable you to see the item without opening the door. Then they stand there, door open, package in hand, reading the package.

Going back to the false eyelashes: mascara commercials border on fraud. You are not seeing the effect of mascara on the models - you are seeing false eyelashes.

Where you at? That's where I'm at. Sigh... I've even heard newscasters say these. I seen- sounds like someone just fell off the turnip truck, yes? (Sorry, couldn't resist!)

I generally 'roll with the punches' or 'small stuff', but today, I am reminded how VERY irksome the so called music that is played while 'holding' on the phone is. I don't think we have a word to describe the sounds I hear. Something like a broom whacking a tree while a pig is being slaughtered. I just can't bear it....... and, then we went to late breakfast and had the same 'noise' on the menu. I remember the days when "elevator" music was laughed at. How nice that would be with breakfast instead of screaming.

I call it Turkey Day for Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving because I have no religion but do enjoy the family theme of the day, which is coming over enjoying a turkey, some ham, veggies, salad, and family time. It's warm and fuzzy day for us.

One thing that bothers me is people and their cell phones. When you're in a store, you don't need to chat on your phone the entire time, including while the cashier is trying to give you customer service. If you want her full attention, put down that phone. My face pretty much told a customer the other day, to hang up her phone. Within 20 seconds after making eye contact with me she was finally off of it while I was trying to ring up her stuff..... She got "the look". Also, why do people use their speaker phone in public? I don't want to hear your half of the conversation, why do you think I want to hear the other guys half of the conversation? Turn off the speaker and hold the phone to your ear.

Nothing surprises me anymore these days. I've learned to speak my mind. When I first started reading this group many many years ago, I would either agree with what everyone said, or not say anything at all. The internet taught me to speak my mind. I don't hold back now. I got it so much from others everywhere, now I give it back to. ;)

I try not to let little things get to me. Life is too short and fragile to let things bother me anymore. If something bothers me in person, I walk away. If it bothers me online, I change screens.

The world is changing rapidly and I'm just rolling with the punches.

My Irk level hits the roof when I encounter a close talker, you know, the type that is about 3 inches away from you face so you can see every detail of their features. I always step back and generally the person inches right along with me, lol. If it gets too bad, I request they move apart a bit as I'm claustrophobic, which I'm not. Why do people do this?

I think that the use of antiquated vocabulary, including contractions , is charming. Though not in common use in this country anymore, I find such words interesting and colorful.

We have more than one KT member who uses those contractions and I enjoy reading their posts.

As a general rule, very few things irritate me. It's a waste of my energy, and I'll be darned if I want my head to be filled with negativity. Especially in regards to something on television, for heaven's sake!

Oh, close-talkers! I always back up, I don't want to breathe their used air/germs or smell their breath. Plus, with bifocals, they are too close for me to focus on, unless I tip my head back. LOL

I always think of Dirty Dancing and the "this is my space, this is your space" scene. Get outta my space!

Loud music on tv, when I can't hear the dialogue, someone saying "My bad",

In the words category, boughten instead of bought, pleaded instead of pled,and broke instead of broken. For example, This skirt was boughten at the mall. He has pleaded guilty. The necklace was broke when I got home. National news people say these all the time.
I get "irked" at children running around in a restaurant. Parents who are so engrossed in their phones they don't acknowledge their children. Dirty coats and snotty noses on little ones.
People that "test" the grapes at the grocery store. First of all, isn't that
stealing? Secondly, puhleezzz, it is not washed!

Okay, my turn. I am irked by so many that have already been mentioned. I was reminded of one of mine by the veggies
comment. When did the things we serve along with a meal become SIDES? That makes absolutely no sense to me. I even remember the first time I ever heard it, and it was by a friend that I had known for years. Can't imagine where she heard it.

A small irk is when posters don't add their name to the end of their post, and I have to scroll back to see who said that.
