I Learned something this morning!

There was a segment about H.J. Heinz and his glass bottles and condiments etc.

Did you know that the 57 insignia at the neck where it meets the body of the bottle is there for a reason? THAT's where you tap the bottle to get the maximum flow of ketchup.

Having said that, I haven't seen a glass bottle in ages. Everything is usually the upside down squirt bottle but I will certainly be looking for glass bottles at a restaurant, and trying it out!

I have seen those glass bottles at some grocery stores still. I have not bought one in ages I have the upside down one. I bought a box of the individual packets for the rv.
I had never heard that about tapping on the insignia, interesting. I learned something too.

Fresh aloe always turned pink when I kept it in the fridge. Never caused me any problems, however, I was only using it as a facial mask (i.e., topically & on unbroken skin) so I have no experience with whether it's safe to ingest once it turns pink. I have a couple suggestions, depending on how you were planning to use the aloe use. One, is to try the traditional way of harvesting aloe, instead of "squeezing" the leaves: use a sharp knife to score the leaf lengthwise & 'filet' the gel from the skin. Cut away the inner flesh leaving enough margin (1/8th of an inch is plenty) so as to not get all the green & intensely bitter juices from the skin. This way you'll have aloe gel that is milder tasting but sufficiently potent. You can then puree or press & strain the clear flesh to produce juice if that's what you prefer using. (The green juices seem to cause very strong intestinal movement - which sometimes is what folks are aiming for; the clear flesh is gentler.) Two, consider stirring grapefruit seed extract (GSE) into the product. I use 1 to 6 drops per ounce (which is waaaay plenty) if I'm concerned about spoilage in any of my herbal preparations. It's a safe & remarkably non-toxic preservative with powerful anti-microbial activity. At one drop per ounce you can't really taste its bitterness, but the aloe is already bitter I don't think it would be very noticeable. Green blessings! ~bushpoet

How odd. I had a similar thing happen here. I bought a new rose and didn't have time to re-pot it, so I stuck it along with the ugly black pot it came in into an attractive ceramic container. Along comes the Big storm, monster winds (40-60 mph) with over 5 inches of rain. I figured that with that much water the rose should hold for at least 3 days or more given our mild 70's weather. Nope, 2 days after the storm it's wilted. Took the rose out of the ceramic pot, watered it, left it sitting in a saucer with drained out water and sure enough it perked right back up. To me the two obvious problems could be the growing medium that the rose is in is too well drained; And/Or, the roots have been so chopped off to fit the plastic pot that despite the downpour, the moisture was taken out of the leaves faster then the roots could absorb it. There is a 3rd extremely remote possibility, but I won't know the answer until I find the time to repot the rose...What's the root/soil situation with your roses?

I love those granite remnants. We have used the large sink cut outs for tabletops on our porch. I bought wrought iron plants stands for them. We had some smaller round pieces from a vessel sink install that I used for stepping stones into our doggy door. I like the idea of a small cutting board. too heavy to pick up and move to the sink to wash, though I guess they can be cleaned in place. Looking forward to seeing the photos.

Perhaps crushing it causes a certain reaction that does not happen when the creatures are suckling the fluids from the plant. That's my hypothesis that I'm going with anyway. Disclaimer: I am but a laywoman. but there could be something significant to this for those of us looking for a safer alternative for pest control. They did it with chyrsanthemums....can those become infested with aphids? Pretty sure the stuff made from chrysanthemums is lethal to aphids.

Growing up in Pittsburgh Heinz was a big deal for us - I still have my Heinz pickle pin that was given to me when I toured the plant with my Brownie troop.

CBS has a 1/2 hour segment that is very interesting on all kinds of tidbits. I saw it there this morning.

Marie_cate, I have a few of those little Heinz gherkin pickle pins too. The Heinz Plant in Leamington, Ontario after operating for 100 years was shut down this past June and sold to another company which now makes tomato juice using the local tomatoes. Loved touring the plant when on school trips and watching how ketchup was made.

I always look for the glass bottle of Heinz ketchup but they sure are hard to find these days. I don't like that upside down plastic squeeze bottle.

Heinz also made up the "57" when he first started his ketchup business. (Don't think he ever got to actually selling 57 different things!)

Y'all know to hold the ketchup bottle at an angle, right? There has to be space to let the air from outside into the bottle or you have an air lock.

chisue - Even when Henry Heinz first started marketing "57 Varieties" he was already manufacturing more than 60. He thought 57 was a lucky number. The company now manufactures over 5,700 items.

Cherry- The original Heinz plant on the northside of Pittsburgh has been converted into luxury loft style apartments with exposed brick walks and 16' windows. My niece lived in one of the buildings for a while and I always laughed when she told me she was in the 'Beans' building. The others are called Meat, Cereal and Reservoir buildings.
