Out of The Mouths of Babes

Posted by jannie (My Page) on

My cousin Jamie has a 5 year old grandson, David. . He spends a lot of time with his grandparents, whose last name is French. Jamie babysits him at least twice a week, has done so since he was born. He recently said to Jamie "When I stay with you, my name is David French, and when I go home my name is David Smith." Smart boy, right? I changed all the names, so don't remark on that.

Aren't kids just amazing. A friend was telling me her 4 year old DGD keeps saying "Grandaddy you have gray hair, you are old" and Granddaddy replies he is not old. The other days she said "Granddaddy you are REALLY old". Fortunately, GM dyes her hair to keep her gray covered and she is 7 yrs. older than her DH.

jannie -- I don't understand. Do you mean his name is pronounced 'Duh-veed' in the French household and 'Day-vid' in the non-French household? Surely his surname doesn't change?

Our DGS has a Grandma and Grandpa (us) and a Busha and Jaja (his mom's parents, who are 3rd generation Polish-Americans). However, wherever he is, he's still (his name).

Cute, but I'm confused, too. He can't be smart about his surname changing depending upon who's house he's at, right? At first I thought you were saying that there's a divorce and hard feelings, and that he's smart enough to play the game. That would be smart (but sad). But I don't really know what you mean.

I, too, don't understand why little David would think that his surname changes when he's at his grandparents' house. Do his grandparents refer to him with their surname when they introduce him to other people? If so, that's just so wrong.

David keeps his first name, but he changes his surname depending on the household he's in. There's no divorces in any of his "families". He thinks he can change his last name to fit into either of his two "families." I thoght his way of acknowledging his two families is cute.

I remember my 4 year old GS crawled in bed with me when I was visiting. Got right in my face and said "Grandmother will you be my friend?"

Melts your heart.

Drew was talking to his Mommie about Mac, our Chihuahua. He told her I know where Mac comes from. She said you do? Where does he come from? Drew said Mexico! He was pretty proud of himself, Mommie asked him how do you know that? Drew says "I just know these things". LOLOL She asked Auntie and I if we told him that two weeks ago when they were here.

It turned out someone did tell him Mac came from Mexico and he remembered!
Oh and he really didn't come from Mexico, he was born about 85 miles from here! LOL

What cute/funny stories. I was putting on makeup (foundation) one day when my 13 year old DGD was little. She asked what it was for and I told her it was to cover up imperfections, spots, wrinkles, etc. on my face. She leaned right into the mirror by me and looked closely at my face and said, "Yeah, sort of........" LOL
