Hi! I'm in long Island, which still has lots of power outages. Best estimate our electric company can give is the weekend after this (Nov 10-11). Very luckily, my DH and I got power back after 22 hours. Our two daughters have been stopping by, each spent a night here keeping warm. Both have brought over their pets because we have heat and they don't. Older daughter brought her boyfriend's two parrotts. Boy do they make noise! And younger daughter brought her tropical fish. The parrots are in a closed off bedroom to keep cats away and the fish are in a bathroom. So we're running a free pet sitting business. I'm afraid to drive because the traffic lights are still out and I don't want to waste gasoline. So I travel on foot to our local grocery, where they are taking cash only.

They may not exactly realize it, but I'm sure the pets appreciate being someplace more comfortable than their homes would be.

How's gas in your area? I'm sure you've heard, it's so bad in NJ, there are long lines, and now gas rationing in many areas. Luckily, we're in the south end of the state--all stations are open and they aren't even raising their prices. And I'm enough inland that our area had rain and wind, but not enough for significant damage, thank goodness. Even so, I tried to talk my dd out of coming to visit today (an hour each way) so she wouldn't waste her gas, just in case.

Glad you're doing well--we had an outtage about that long last summer when the Derecho went through--and you just feel so fortunate when those lights go back on, don't you. Hang in there. We'll get through this one, also.

Gas is awful-all the stations in my town are closed, out of gas. There are cars parked around the block about a half mile near one station. There was a "rumor" the station would be getting a gas delivery today (Saturday).

I have not been on this forum much the last few days as I have been mesmerized by this storm from very beginning. It first appeared in the GFS model, then the Euro Model picked up up, at which time the GFS dropped it, and took Sandy out to see. That was where things remained for about a week, at which point both weather models came into agreement, and the picture was always some version of horrendous after that. I have every compassion for all of you that have lots trees, had wild areas distroyed, trees striped to trunks, etc. We had similar effects during our Jan 2009 ice storm, and everything is STILL recovering. Sandy turned out to be even worse than forecast, and that is saying something. But long term, it will be good for the forest, as it will weed out the weaker trees, and it will give more room for the remaining to expand, and it will allow new colonization, and in more mature forest, understory trees that have been waiting their turn will burst forth to fill the void over the coming year. Dogwoods will get more light, and flower more prolifically, same with serviceberry, and many other species especially wildflowers. Maybe the native pollinators can catch a break, and you will be rewarded with butterflies. The opening of the canopy will also help to control dogwood anthracnose, by drying the foliage so that the fungus can't take hold, giving much needed relief to those species in the NE. Point of all this being that while this is a horrible event, so good will actually come from it, and all of you can set yourself in the right mindset to see these things to make it all more tolerable. I am worried about Alex.. The area is really damaged. I know there was a post at the Palm forum , but i know the area and it was hit hard. I will post if i hear anything more.. At least we know all is well. Im just concerned with the structual loss and the overall well being because of the severe drop in temperatures and they still dont have any power.. I did see a large convoy of trucks with huge generators heading up the eastern shore to NY and NJ from out military bases here. They have suffered so much loss. I flew over NJ shore today and into Newark.. It is realy bad... I think of just having issues from my car being flooded and thinking that i had it BAD.. All i have to do is think of them up north and see it with my own eyes and i realize i have nothing to worry about. If you all are reading this.. we are thinking of you and sending you our prayers.. Well my power went out about an hour after I posted. I think they intentionally cut the power to fix some lines. The nursing home I work at down the road lost power about 11 last night. I did get power back about 3:45 this afternoon. The generator worked well. I left my son home to keep an eye on things and took my daughter to work again. It's a good thing she likes it there. Pam, He's more than a dope. I'm pretty much done. He's up all night making noise and sleeps all day. I just talked to my landlord she's going to talk to him. I wish I could find a house. My daughter does still wear that apron. We don't get to bake together often because the kitchen in this old farmhouse is small and we trip over each other. I'm glad you didn't lose power and I'm very thankful for no flooding here. I feel sorry for those who are dealing with that. Tracey

I'm so happy to see you posting. I was worried about you. Glad you and DH didn't have to wait too long to get your power restored. I can't believe how bad it is in NY and NJ--and how poor the response is from those who are in charge.

Exactly, our power company (LIPA= Long Island Power Authority) is estimating electric will be back for my sister in law next Wednesday (Nov. 7) and my 2 daughters still have no estimated restoration time. They say all but 2 hospitals on Long Island have been restored. And they are saying, if a tree is down, it's the homeowners' responsibility to remove it before the electric company crew will attempt to fix the power line.

My brother is in NJ. He still doesn't have power. I asked him about food and water. He said he has a grocery store about four miles away. He is trying not to waste gasoline so he wears a back pack and rides his bike over for ice and any other groceries he might want. He'd be ok for a while even if he didn't have the grocery store. I think he was pretty well stocked up with food and water before the storm hit.
