Consignments?

I have a few old items in the house that I'm thinking of getting rid of, and no qualms about doing so. A form of de-cluttering, but it's not give to thrift store stuff. Nor E-bay! And no idea of value. Has anyone done consignments, and how/who/where did you determine that decision? Obvious there is a fee involved, and does it vary? Is there a time limit? Would the seller be responsible for any damage incurred while in their possession?
Long ago we had an antique dealer come to the house who looked around and bought some things. Their offer is probably half of what they deem the value to be. It's also a gamble for them too. Can they resell the item quickly, or will their investment sit in the store for 10 years? But simple, we got rid of it with no hassle.
If a fair value can be determined, attempts to sell the item directly are an option. Thanks for your experience and ideas.
