Spud?

I have been in and out....did I miss anything about Spud? Piggy Sue and I were just talking about him last night, and of course, being the caring porcine that she is, she wanted to know if there was any news about him? ;) I was wondering myself.

Yeah, me too, I was wondering as well. Maybe Piggy S should send him a card.

She probably would if she had his address.

Sorry everyone! Thanks for asking. Spud is still the same as far as his hind legs are concerned. He is spoiled, he is getting big (not as big as his siblings) and he is alot of work. (I'm a clean freak and I have a pig in my house) He still has to be in the house because he is too young to be just put in a shed or barn with no heat, and besides, he would be so lonely all by himself. He won't ever be able to go back to his siblings, they no longer know him and they would pick on him and end up killing him. The little guy hasn't much for being able to defend himself. If he would ever get to where he can walk on 3 legs, he may be able to join them at weaning time. Some days I think one of his back legs moved and then I think I must have been seeing things. He is getting so strong and can get where he wants to go. I try not to think what it will be like when he gets too big for me to handle, he will one day have to go outside to stay. I'm thankful for the large crate/house DH build for him. It is on wheels so I can move it around. Otherwise not much to report on him. He is happy and he loves his human mommy, caring for a pig I don't feel all human at times. LOL I promise if and when the day comes that I can really celebrate with him, I will let you all know. Thanks again for caring! |

Cheryl have you seen the wheels that they use for dogs that have paralyzed back ends? Could you rig up something similar for Spud?

These guys are in my community. I think the hardest part would be "size of him"...and keeping up with his growth. Our neighbors had one made for their old Dachshund.
Here is a link that might be useful: k9 Carts

I understand, Cheryl. Just the sheer size that he will grow to and the "nature of the beast", makes just about any contraption unfeasable, I would imagine. Having a pig for a pet, is one thing, but a hog....something else. (sigh) When we set out to do a good deed for an injured animal, we don't always know the ultimate result. Bless you for trying. I am still hoping he can regain the use of at least one of his legs. I know you can't keep him on if he ends up paralyzed completely. Hugs to you, Cheryl...and Spud, too.

Heather...we have been talking about a wheel type of thing. Only problem I see right now is, he eats, plays awhile and scoots back to his soft bed. I would be putting him in and taking him out etc. This pig gets very ticked at me when I want him to do something he dosen't want to do. LOL Marilyn...you are so right about everything you said. It is too late for me to change what I did and what I maybe should not have done. Spud and what I'm going thru with him is just part of my life right now and I have to deal with it. Oh, yes many days I get very frustrated with it all, but it's not his fault. Remember everyone, he was only a few hours old when he got hurt and 2 of his brothers were killed instantly. He was so young he dosen't know he is suppose to have 4 legs...just my way of thinking. Right or wrong, I now have to deal with what ever the outcome is for him. I thank you all again for your concern and it sure helps me to have such good friends here that will allow me to ramble on about him and you all are so concerned for him also. Means alot...Thank you all again |

Can we see him again? Or is it too emotional for you to take pictures in his current state. Love watching everyone pets as the grow up.... even if he isn't exactly a typical pet!

I'm sorry he hasn't responded as you'd hoped, but at least you have *tried*. (I'm picturing Spud in a sort of XXL playpen! LOL) At least you haven't faced the problems of one of my town's residents. A couple years ago a newly divorced mother moved with her two children from a 5 acre home on the outskirts to a more typical home on a regular lot near the center of town. She had two pet pigs, BIG pigs. The neighbors had a fit, complained to the mayor, etc., threatened to bring suit. The whole thing resolved when Mrs. Walgreen's business collapsed and she lost the house during bankruptcy. The pigs lost their customized garage/home, complete with 'pig nanny'. Both pigs were rather elderly and went to live out their days at a place that had been founded to take in abandoned pot-bellied pigs. It was a sad, rather bizarre episode. 'Townies' couldn't accept that pigs could be family pets, as loved as someone else's dogs. They were kept clean. There was no odor. The neighbors just couldn't get over the *concept* of living next door to pigs! (I'm sure if they wanted to sell, buyers wouldn't want to do it either.)
