Need help ASAP - birthday party

Madison's first birthday party is tomorrow afternoon....standard relatives/children 5 and under/parents of those children.

Question...what is the agenda order for opening gifts/eating buffet luncheon/singing happy birthday?

We're sitting here trying to figure out.

Generally here people seem to eat then sing happy birthday before the cake is served as dessert. Gifts last, if they are done (when the child is grumpy or overstimulated or the first two steps of the party took too long, often gifts aren't opened in front of guests anymore).

We did a bunch of things for my mom's surprise 70th birthday party. We had a photo of her in a ball gown enlarged on cardstock and then cut out (picture an 8" paper doll). We added table numbers to the photo and put one in the center of each table. We scanned a zillion family photos and made candy bar wrappers with them, tried to give each guest a photo of themselves with her from over the years. Also on the wrapper: Thanks for sharing Connie's birthday. My sister created a Powerpoint slide show with the songs, In My Life by the Beatles, What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong and Because You Loved Me by Celine Dion. We started with photos from her childhood and ended with the most recent photos (even included a shot of all the "grandogs." We (4 kids and 6 grandkids) did a skit called "When Mom Was My Age" with each of us giving 2 or 3 important historical facts from each year and each of us ending with And a gallon of gas cost ____. My mom was big into singing on car trips and taught us silly songs, so we all did a sing-a-long.

I agree with lindac (as usual) -- you don't need games or planned activities. If you really are afraid that people won't socialize, then have a party to watch a game or other special event on TV. But I would trust your guests to enjoy getting to know each other. If you think these people simply won't enjoy each other, don't invite them all to the same party! Why don't you want to serve supper? If I were invited to a party on a Saturday evening, unless it starts really late -- at least 9 pm -- I would assume you were giving me dinner. It doesn't have to be a sit-down meal or anything fancy, but substantial enough that people who didn't eat before won't go hungry (or scarf up all the snacks before the rest get any!). Cold cuts, chili, etc. all cost as little as appetizers and are a lot easier to prepare and serve, too. Are you planning on indicating when you invite people that it is a birthday party, or just inviting them to "a" party? If the former, they will probably bring gifts, so you definitely don't want to seem skimpy with the food, as if you were trying to get gifts while spending as little as possible. I know that is NOT why you are having this party! But you want to make sure that none of your guests gets that feeling.

'B' birthday party for boy's 5th b-day

Well, the party was a success so I thought I'd share the results after your thoughtful replies. Invitation: Cut out a large letter B from paper printed with balloons. I randomly wrote on the front B=Ball, B=Balloon, B=Book, B=Bubbles, B=Bugs. Then I wrote the party details for the Big Boy Birthday Bash on the other side, including that this was a "B" themed party. Food: (I was cooking for about 43 adults and kids.) Beefy Ribs and (Buns with Hotdogs for the kids) Brown Rice and Chickpea Rainbow Salad (GREAT pesto vngrte) Beans with Lemon and Walnut Vngrte Bacon and Blue Cheese Mashed Potato Casserole Biscuits with fresh herbs and Basil Butter Drinks: Basil lemonade Blueberry lemonade Cake: Banana cake in the shape of a bumblebee. I found a baseball cake pan the shape of half of a ball and thought "why not make that the body of the bee?" So I did. I used a 6" round cake for the head, but I cut it out a bit to fit snuggly into the round body cake piece. I frosted it with golden yellow buttercream. I was in a hurry so instead of mixing black icing for the bee's stripes, I sprinkled on brown jimmies in stripes. I used black licorice for the antenna and legs. I made wax paper wings with popsicle sticks as veins. I found those black licorce wheels as big eyes. It was so cute!! And tasty! Since I needed cake for 43 people, I made some extra banana cupcakes frosted with the bee frosting and some jimmies. Games: Balls (football, baseball, tennis balls, curvy ball and catchers, bouncy balls, soccer ball, beach ball, etc.) Bubbles (FIL makes his own bubble juice and has tons of fun wands) Butterfly pinata (couldn't find a bumblebee) filled with small bouncy balls, bee rings, etc. Treat bags: Black Bags filled with small "B" items like bubbles, ball erasers, blowers, etc. Decorated the house and deck with tons of balloons from the Dollar Store. Some of the gifts given to DS began with B, and some even decorated their gift bags and cards with B. It was cute to see people get into the theme. All in all, it was a great party. Kids had a fabulous time--too much of a good time at moments. ;) Thanks for your help!

We do it like Kat does. Just had our Madison's party last Saturday. Food, gifts, then sing Happy Birthday, blow out the candles and have cake and ice cream.

We always would eat, have cake (where b/d child would make a wish, then open gifts. You have to open the gifts after you make a wish- which is part of the dessert tradition :)

Eat, gifts, sing/cake. Sometimes we eat cake while opening the gifts.

My grandson has attended several birthday parties in his first 3 3/4 years. They do not open the presents at the party in west Los Angeles. I guess it would make life easier. I remember trying to teach my kidlets that the present is for their friend, and sometimes there would be tears as my sons saw the present opened and become the birthday boy's own.

It has been a while since we had a childs party but it was always play games, eat, sing, cake and presents were last. We gave small treat/party bags as the children left. They (treat bags) could get out of hand/costly at times.

Eat buffet style.
Sing song and make wish before dessert (the cake.)
Open gifts.
Play games.
Lastly just let the kids play and adults chat as they sit ( or help with clean up.)

Sometimes the Games first(with prizes and consolations for non-winners) BEFORE the gift opening...not so much competition to 'see', 'touch', etc. with the Birthday Child's new things because all the kids have something of their own. Specially something that's fun and will keep them busy...blowing bubbles, water balloons, sidewalk chalk, etc.

Then wind down with the eating, cake ceremony and opening gifts before going home!

Little of OT, but how much do parents pay for gifts their kids give to the birthday boy/girl now days? What happens if the giver doesn't have much to spend?
