Thanks so much for the update, Tami. I've been looking for one every time I come to the KT. Sounds as if she's having a lot to have to put up with. I pray that she gets better with each passing day and on her way to great health.

Tami, that's good news, I'm sorry this has been so difficult for her and stressful for you.

My own mother had a rough time with the anesthetic with a planned hip surgery a couple of years ago...she 'woke up' disoriented, confused, and I don't think she was doing any better with what they were using in her post surgical IV, Dilaudid, so a frightening couple of days.

I hope she gets to rehab and is more comfortable soon. How about you, are you getting some rest?

Quite an ordeal for both of you. I'm glad to hear there's been improvement.

Hopefully the worst of it is over and she can progress with PT. You need to get some rest yourself.

Praying for the family, and sounds like some of the meds are affecting her. You might review all the meds she has been given and is being given with a pharmacist at the hospital. They could check this out better that the medical staff, because they might not realize what could react with what--if you know what I mean. Some meds react with food, and some even react with the drugs given during the surgery that may still in her system.

Morz8, I think that is what they gave her the night she broke it in ER. It worked better than the morphine they gave her after surgery. She has been getting either percoset or liquid Tylenol IV, which seems to work pretty good during the day. Evenings are typical even without the surgery and meds. It's the dementia that is causing most of that.

Marie, thanks for the thought about the drugs not mixing. We have already done that, but thanks. When she had the surgery for her kidney cancer (they did radio frequency ablation twice, but she still has use of half of that kidney, and the other was fine and still works good) she had trouble waking up after wards.

Other than waking up a good hour earlier than I usually do, I have been sleeping pretty good.

So many things that could be causing it. My first thought were her meds. Then Sundowners. Make sure they keep a check on her lungs. Pneumonia or(not getting enough oxygen) can cause problems as well.

Tami, I am so sorry you are going through this. I know how it feels to have your mother suffer from dementia...my Mom was unable to speak her last 2 years. The added medical problem just makes it so much worse. I hope she will get through the healing process without further complications. My heart goes out to you and yours, and your Mom is in my prayers.

Tami, more prayers and thoughts headed your way today. My Mom also has dementia and becomes agitated in the late afternoon evening hours. Her doctor prescribed Remeron to take before bedtime which has seemed to help. She's only been taking it 3 weeks now. Currently we're struggling with unexplained back pain.

Let me know if you need someone to talk to - sometimes just talking helps.

How old is your mother, Tami? What had been her situation prior to breaking her hip? Are you alone in caring for her?

I'm an 'only'. My mother died at 73 after suffering with leukemia for two years. I was 37. I miss her very much, but I am grateful she and I were spared this. I'm sorry for your and her travails.
