2 bottles at 65 cents each?! I just paid $2.49 for a small envelope.
Pepper grinders, grrrrr. It seems that I can only get a year out of one then it doesn't grind anymore. I don't want to pay $25 and up, but that's often the price. I generally pay $10.

We have a pepper grinder for peppercorns, and we also have a salt grinder. Pink Himalayan Sea Salt in that one.

I wouldn't care if it lasted a year, with free replacements. Mine is "Old Thompson".
Never heard of pogo, except for a stick. Don't do that either.

Sea Salt would also be another topic.

Not likely Himalayan SEA salt, the mountain range is inland.

Old Fixer, if you like it so much, why not treat yourself to the real thing? I'm not gonna believe that something you bought in a store off the beaten path that was so cheap was fresh.

Trader Joe's has cracked pepper in disposable grinders. They also have lemon pepper, cinnamon sugar and sea salt in similar grinders. They work well and you throw them away ( or recycle. ) when finished.

I just checked my new Penzeys Spice catalog and they list Black Peppercorns for15.70 for a pound. They have a variety of peppercorns available also. I love their catalog with all the spices and recipes. Good description on their spices Too.

dh likes coarse ground and I like lemon pepper..used to have a grinder but when it wore out we just didn't replace it...dh likes the brand we buy at Costco.

I like freshly ground black pepper. I use it on potaotes, meat, cottage cheese, cooked vetables, and salads.

Wew have a pepper mill and salt shaker pair that was a wedding gift 54 years ago. It became worn, but with some cleaning and adjusting, I am squeezing a bit more service out of it. It does not grind/crush as well as it once did becasue the burrs are worn and not sharp but I will continue to nurse a little more service out of it since I have not been able to find a replacement. It still works better than those awful single use plastic grinders found on pepper packages these days.

I even use it on my oatmeal - the kind you cook- never instant or quick.
I don't prefer it sweetened, but I sure do like my freshly ground black pepper!
I have had my present grinder about 15 years. Still holding up with almost daily use.

Some people crack a supply in one of those pedestal bowls.

We use the below. Sea salt and Peppercorn medley. We too loved ground pepper, but the dang things break constantly. So now we get a new one for each and every bottle. The red tab on the top changes how coarsely it is ground. Didn't know they had other blends. Have to check that out!

Another devotee of freshly cracked pepper, here. I keep three different kinds and three grinders, lol. Penzey's is also my source, though I don't buy it by the pound.

The difference between an old, cheap, dusty, dried out peppercorns and those that are of high quality and fresh is pretty amazing.

I get my salts from Penzey's, too, but also use grocery store kosher much of the time.

If I had to give up all of my herbs and spices but one, I would absolutely hang on to my black peppercorns!

DH and I must be mismatched - I don't ever add black pepper and he dusts his food with it. We've been using the same pepper grinder for 35 years and it still works perfectly. It was very expensive - I think around $45.00 but it was a special gift to mark a very special occasion. The brand is Perfex and it's now around $80.00 but it has given my DH many years of enjoyment.

He can either grind the peppercorns into a fine powder or merely crack one in half. When the company came out with a salt mill I bought him one. But the pepper mill is his favorite.
They're considered classics and have a well known reputation for quality. I don't know how the company manages to stay in business because how many can they possibly sell? But they are built to last. The family owned company is located in Saint-Etienne, France. The mill is made of durable, long lasting cast aluminum and has a metal burr grinder.

If I'm home, I only use freshly ground pepper. I have a pepper mill that looks like a wine bottle, it's wood and I've been using it for about 30 years. Works great and it looks nice on the counter. I find peppercorns in bulk at the store and also at Sam's Club and they aren't very expensive that way.

Sometimes I add a few allspice to the peppercorns, that is a really nice flavor added to the pepper.

One of the reasons I don't use ground pepper from the can is because I read that ground pepper has a high concentration of ground up bugs in it. Blech. Not sure if that is still true, but I'm not taking any chances, either. LOL

I hate, to be the bearer of bad news, flamingo, but we all eat ground up insects in all kinds of food! Flours of all kinds, nut butters, store bought baked goods, cereal, tea, you name it. THE main problem of grain storage is insects!

Diatomaceous earth is the preferred product to use in storage facilities. A certain amount of insect parts per volume of product is standard. I remember reading a Consumer Reports issue that rated popular peanut butter brands. One of the evaluated categories was insects parts per volume. Lol.

But, don't worry.....the insects are ground up like flour; you won't see their little antennae in your teeth or anything.

I know that Rhizo, but when I read it, the percentage of bugs in the pepper was really HIGH, not like what is allowed in manufactured product. It was something like 20%! I can't look at finely ground pepper the same way, ever again.

I don't eat flour or baked goods or cereal, no grains at all actually, so look, more bugs for YOU! LOL

By choice, we aren't big eaters of baked goods or pasta, either store bought or homemade (not because of insects). But volumes of assorted rices and other whole grains, seeds, and dried legumes take up a lot of space in my pantry. Those can be rinsed before using.

I find it pretty hard to believe that any ground pepper product would contain 20% insect parts. The USDA allows for less than 1% by law and that would be extreme.

I do sift through a shipment of whole peppercorn seeds before filling my grinder. There is often little pieces of 'stuff' that falls through the mesh of my sifter.

Let's not get into the discussion of rodent hairs and feces.

We like the grinders for both salt and pepper. We have some nicer ones that we put on the table if we have guests, but for every day we just use the disposable ones from Costco.

we use a pepper grinder...I buy a mix of different kinds of pepper. I like the taste and the mix of color is pretty. I buy it at Walmart.
