Oh, no--not another cat!

I have three indoor cats and one outdoor cat and a limited income. So I am really not in the market for another pet. But this morning an extremely skinny young black cat came up onto my porch and began eating Bonesy's food. Bonesy, being very territorial, probably chased him/her away when I wasn't watching.

I have no idea where he came from, but he sure looked like he hasn't been cared for. He's been in my thoughts several times today.....seeing my own cats on their soft beds and my lap, I can't help thinking of that poor homeless kitty. If I find myself in a position to help him, I know I won't resist.

I need to win the lottery! But that doesn't seem likely since I don't play the lottery. :-)

My sister and BIL need to find a cat. After their last one died, they took awhile to recover from the loss. He still is not ready and probably never will be, but she needs a kitty. I know he would agree if he found a cat like this one that needed a home. I think that is how they adopted their last two cats.

Susan - you better check around your property. There might be some hidden sign there that alerts stray cats that a a soft hearted woman lives there. Just like the old Hobo signs. They would draw a cat on a fence post or side of a building to alert other hobos that a Kind Lady lives here.

Have you taught Baby Joey to say "Here Kitty, Kitty?" I'm not sure how his parents would react though.

Talk about the urge to kill.......... I was gone for two days and when I came home I found a big stray cat had decided to make a bed in my WS containers. It was a flat with eight pots in it and a plastic cover over it. It had plant markers but he had just wiggled them over and made himself a bed. I guess the sun had warmed the warm soil but the plastic kept him dry. I hate it when people drop off pets. Obviously he was accustomed to having a basket or bed of his own, so he didn't mind that it was on a shelf three feet off the ground. We live a few miles out of town and people get tired of their animals and just drop them off. This is the 2nd new cat in the last couple of weeks.

Probably a Virginia Tiger Moth, Jeri. There are so cool. It will probably overwinter as a caterpillar, eat some more next spring, and then pupate. They have a long cycle. I think HE cats are cute! I had some, too, this year. Their faces look like a smooshed in monkey face. The difference between them and Tawny Emperors is that the HE's have black markings on their face, and Tawnies do not. They both eat hackberry, as do QMs. If you ever find a sparsely laid group of eggs, with a couple or more of them "stacked" on top of each other, you have QM eggs. Have fun with your HEs! Lizards don't bother me, and I think they are cute. I have a lizard carving (from Indonesia) in my kitchen, but no real lizards. I had chameleons in Austin that would sit on the ferns in my yard and lick water off the fronds after I had watered them. Occasionally, one would get into the house, but then the exhaust from my stove consisted of a hole in the wall which was in front of where my ferns were. At my parents house, I once opened the silverware drawer to find a HUGE cottonmouth snake that had crawled up along the kitchen sink pipes. I was about 12 at the time and had never been so scared in my life. I tried to scream, but no sound would come out. My father had to take it outside and kill it. He normally didn't kill snakes because he thought they ate mice and rats, but they also stole chicken eggs. Plus a cottonmouth is very poisonous. I'm fine with spiders, except for black widows. Tarantulas make me nervous also, especially when they migrate in huge hoards. When I was about 8, I was surrounded by a huge hoard of them on my grandfather's ranch. Unfortunately, I was barefoot at the time and was trying to pick my way through a sticker patch, and so running away from them was not an option. Also, they are very good jumpers. Lars

I feel so bad for all the lost cats out there in the cold. Please feed this poor thing. I've rescued many over the years and my favorite was near death, greasy fur, and painfully thin and pregnant. She was extremely friendly and so hungry. I fed her and a day later she returned, even thinner. She had had her three babies under a neighbor's porch. It took me awhile to find them. I tried following her but she was tricky. It was very cold although it was spring. When the babies were about two weeks old, I went down and put mom in a carrier and scooped up the babies. I fostered them all and ended up keeping mom, who they thought was about seven and one of babies, the only girl... her lookalike twin tortie. Happily, I can say on this frigid night, both mom and baby eleven years later are laying in front of the woodstove. Makes my heart happy to see this.

I'll have to look for that sign, Maire. Baby Joey's parents are cat lovers, but they're not in the market for any more than the two they already have.

BTW, I'm having dinner at "our" restaurant Saturday night. I'll think of you!

I hope you have a wonderful meal. I haven't been there in nearly a year. We went last fall when the fall foliage was peaking and it was such a pretty drive.

Don't you know, cats are like potato chips, you can't just have 1, 2, or 3.......We also have 3 inside cats and 2 outside semi ferals we take care of and if another one wondered by, it too would probably stay...I often joked about that sign at the end of the street, "Home for Wayward cats" and it's pointed right at our house....
It really does become a financial burden, being retired, but there again, I too think of those poor unloved fur babies, living out there and going hungry and figure, there's always room for one more...Of course hubby doesn't feel that way and I might loose my happy home if that 1 more comes for a visit, lol......

i've been told under threats, no more cats...had to have the brother put down, but still have ashley his sister...lol..last time we had to go away she went along! didn't like it very much, but have a fold up carrier that holds her cat box and room to sleep...she did pretty well...see? i'm a cat person and they have got me thru LOTS! she's 16 this year and still strong for a small kitty!
