Election of officers... have you ever seen this?

I belong to a group of about 100 ladies. It's coming time to elect officers for the new year. Like many org's it is sometimes difficult to get people to volunteer/accept a nomination for officer. The slate was presented the other night & there are 2 people for each of the 4 offices (Pres., VP, Sec, Treas.)...... then there is a slate of one GROUP of 4 people for each office. When the voting commences, you can EITHER vote for the GROUP as a whole,,,,, OR you can vote for an individual in each office.

It's like this:

President: Rose or Daisy

Vp: Petunia or Pansy

Sec: Lilac or Peony

Treas: Marigold or Zinnia

OR---

As a group: (Pres Columbine, VP Aster, Sec Lilac and Treas Marigold)

Yes, Lilac & Marigold have their names in both the individual's slate & the group slate. If you, for example, want Columbine for Pres then you have to accept the other 3 with her. Same thing if your choice was Aster for VP, you accept a "package deal"... (or not).

There's is nothing in the by-laws/constitution that addresses this one way or the other. This is the first time it's ever been presented in this manner. Seems wacky to me. Actually maybe a bit "cliquish" on the part of the group slate???

So .... anybody ever seen anything like this? What do ya think? Oh, btw this GROUP slate was apparently Columbine's idea.

The group vote sounds like an attempt at 'regime change' or voting a 'straight ticket' by party in a national election.

Nope, I have never seen that before and it seems confusing, at our PTA votes we never got a choice it was always a straight on slate vote that some commitee came up with. I never voted why bother:(

I'm just reading this thread for the first time. I've never seen cyclamen mites but I, personally, see no reason to ever look to see them. They show themselves by their damage. On gesneriphiles, some years ago, someone posted that they searched and searched for them, and finally found them under the skin of the plant, inside rather than outside. I don't know if this is the case, but I certainly have heard lots anecdotal commentary that they are very hard to see with magnification. So, my methodology is to concentrate on damage, as that is much easier to diagnose. African Violets are notorious for cyclamen mite susceptability. A late friend of mine, who for a while was commercially growing mini violets, found he had to spray frequently to keep them under control, although thrips were probably even more difficult to control. Now, in a greenhouse mass-propagation situation bugs become much more of a chronic problem than in a small collection. They come back fast whereas in our collections we can get rid of them for a long time between infestations. But, what I have noticed, having a mixed gesneriad collection with a small part being AV's, is that cyclamen mite damage has always made itself apparent first with episcias. In fact I noticed that episcias will get quite a bit of obvious damage before I see anything on the violets. So, keep your episcias happy, so that when they get mites, you will be able to quickly ID the situation. Once you suspect or actually know you have an infestation, then treatment is simple and effective. I have had three or four infestations in the last five or more years. Each time I sprayed with one application of Avid, and had complete and lasting supression of the mites. The badly damaged episcias showed recovery by putting out new crowns from the axils of the leaves. Stolons sometimes were dead, and sometimes recovered. Violets that didn't show damage, did not later develop damage. They just regained normal vigor. I would go as far as to suggest, that if you think you have mites, you have two options. One--you can wait until you are certain that the conditions you are seeing are from mite damage, and then spray. This methodology will result in more damage, and a longer period for recovery; but it will teach you first hand what the damage looks like, and what the pattern of damage and time frame of development is like. Then, at least, the next time you will know more about what is happening with your plants--whether a problem is mites or something else. The second option is to spray if you suspect damage. Then if the problem continues you will know that it isn't mites. But, if the plants soon begin to show increased vigor, and lose the problem foliage that concerned you then you can suspect that mites might have been at fault. Either way, you will have dealt with mites and succeeded. I found Avid was very effective. It has an odor, that is apparent and not too dissimilar to some natural plant odors--Kohleria allenii comes to mind. It is something like the natural scent of Nematanthus albus too. It shouldn't be objectionable unless you are especially susceptable to changes in room odors. A small quantitiy of Avid will last a long time. One shouldn't need to use it very often (less than once a year, mol), and a quarter teaspoon will make a gallon, which is about four times + what one would typically need to treat two or three multi-level lightstands. You probably don’t need a steel frame. It should only be required if there is a concern about the load on the joist, so maybe if the hood sets under a bathtub or something. Quartzite is just not that heavy, it only seems heavy because it is rather thin. 2cm thick quartzite is about 12 lbs per square foot, which is really nothing significant. A wall cabinet with a typical load of plates and bowls will easily be more than that much and these days that is 1/2” plywood held to the wall with two to four #10 cabinet screws. A 36” stone hood in a room with 9’ ceilings is going to be about 312 lbs of stone… The shear rating of one 3/8” bolt is more than double that and I assure you, more than one will be used. The only real complication is the attachment of the frame to the joists or studs and that is going to require bolts in shear.

Phone calls, especially robo calls, for candidates tend to make me decide NOT to vote for them. My caveat is that I think how door knocking works is getting the people on your “side” to show up to the polls. There’s not much evidence that door knocking flips votes. So you do targeted door knocking—just the people registered to vote in the party of your candidate. I deal with this better. Maybe because I lived on such a steep driveway hardly anyone ever made the effort to ring my doorbell, and so I considered what they had to say. But I will note in all my years of voting, I just about always split my ticket. I voted with the party I'd registered with, or I voted for another party's candidate. I now live rurally in MA, so we will see what happens here. I already met two candidates for the primaries in September, at the town dump (which is only open certain hours). Haven't had a chance to follow enough issues yet, so my verdict is not in. At least in MA you don't have to register with a party to vote in a primary, or so I understand. (So, I haven't.)

I think all ag products grown in California are irrigated so while water supplies from runoff and the need for aquifer recharging for ground water levels are affected by a particular year's snow and rainfall, product production shouldn't be as long as there's available water deliveries to the growing sites. Irrigated orchards may very well have alternating good and bad years if that's the normal cycle of the tree type, I wouldn't know. Orchards being long term investments, I suspect they get priority for water so that the trees don't die. Most row crops are annuals and don't need to be planted in any particular year if water supplies for the grower or field are limited. If you've had the otherwise monotonous experience of driving along Hwy 5, you've probably seen the signs visible at the south end of the San Joaquin Valley, near Grapevine - Food Grows Where Water Flows. On your comment, you might be amused to learn that using "the" in front of a highway number is much more common in SoCal than in NorCal, where the number can be used without a "the". I'm a SoCal native but moved north before the "the" came into vogue. I know LA freeways by name, not by numbers. It's easier for me, especially with instances of freeways with segments with different numbers. Or, the reverse, sections of the same Hwy number that are used for freeways of different names. Is "The 5" the San Diego Fwy, the Santa Ana Fwy, or the Golden State Fwy in SoCal? Of course you know the answer - it's all three! But not all of the San Diego Fwy is The 5, because part of it is The 405.

Sounds like Columbine and her friends are only interested in doing the job if they can work with their buddies. That's not very democratic. I've never seen that before, but it is amazing that you found that many people willing to take on the jobs.

I would suggest voting for each office, by written ballot. That way no one know who or how they voted.

Do your bylaws use Robert's Rules of Order as their parliamentary authority? If so, he does not recognize more than one person holding each office. He also spells out how to do an election.

Typically, a nominating committee will develop a slate, and on that slate is the ONE person the committee nominates for each elected office.

This method sounds crazy. Check your bylaws for anything that guides your election as well as the parliamentary authority mentioned in the bylaws.

First of all, congrats on having enough people interested to run.We're going to have the same board for the 3rd year in a row because nobody will step forward.
I'm the captain and we follow Robert's Rules. Even if
we didn't use RR, I'd rule, as the captain, that this
election format is not allowed.
It's absurd.

I checked our bylaws & there's not much on elections, just that we have a Nominating Committee... And YES we are supposed to use Roberts' Rules for parliamentary authority. But the RR is followed loosely if at all, for even the most elementary things during a meeting (can we say that the current Pres is pretty clueless?).

This time there will be a paper ballot (secret) because there are options in each category. In the past, prior to last year, there was *only* a slate of 4 candidates for which to vote & it was a voice vote.

I haven't belonged to that many clubs, so was wondering if this had ever been seen before. Seemed totally nonsense to me that someone on the Nominating Committee didn't stand up & say NO to Columbine. I will be flabbergasted if she & her group are elected.

It's true that it is difficult to find people for these volunteer postions. Columbine made a way to make it more efficient, enjoyable etc. for her. As long as they handle things appropriatley, maybe she is on to something.

The problem is that elections should be inclusive, not exclusive. Columbine's slate excludes the opportunity for
anyone else to be elected to the board. This is not a
democratic format. The president should disallow it.

And of course, if Columbine was planning to do something underhanded, like raid the treasury (note that I am NOT suggesting she is planning to do this, but if someone wanted to it would be a good way to go) having her own hand picked group of co-conspirators would help enable this.
In all likelihood Columbine's intention is simply to have a committee of like minded souls, but a bad person with evil intentions could use Columbine's method as a precedent to have a similar group of like minded souls elected, leaving them in the prime seat for doing as they wished.

You are clearly not following Robert's Rules. A nominating committee selects the BEST candidate for each elected office. They make sure that the nominees agree to being nominated. On election day, the chair reads the proposed slate or calls upon the nominating committee chairman to do so. Then the chair asks for any other nominations from the floor. Finally, the vote is taken, and it can be voice vote or written. If it is voice vote and if there are more than one candidate for an office, the chair asks for a vote for Jane and then a vote for Mary. If the chair is uncertain, then she or he can ask for a raise of hands and count the votes.

You always accept nominations from the floor after the slate is presented. There may be no nominations, but the membership is given that opportunity.

is this more social, or a service org? even with the small more social mothers of multiples i belonged to in the 70's, we rotated officers by ballot and rr's...
