Boiled dinner in the pressure cooker right now, yum.

I had some homemade chili soup and crackers for my supper. The sun is finally out and looks pretty. Rained most of the forenoon and was cloudy.

Had the end of the year golf luncheon today and am not that hungry. Since I skipped breakfast this morning, I'll probably have breakfast for dinner. Oatmeal with a baked apple in it, some chopped walnuts and a splash of orange juice.

It's harvest time here so I haul 9 meals out to the field every night. Tonight it's baked chicken breast with homemade stuffing, strawberries and a pecan pie bar.

Steak fajitas, Spanish rice and refried beans

Spatchcocked a chicken and have been brining it all day. It'll go on the grill in a little while, with veggie kabobs to follow (onions, mushrooms, zucchini, Brussels sprouts).

Quite warm here, today. I went shopping for the supplies I need for the halloween cookies I'm going to bake on Thursday. One of the girls in the neighborhood (aged 9) asked if she could help me make them this year and I'm looking forward to it.

I'm making ginger and sugar cookies which will be cut into shapes then decorated like jack o'lanterns, ghosts, and (my favorite) eyeballs. We might make little cupcakes, too.

I'll deliver little treat bags to the neighboring kids 'll keep ...we turn off the lights on Halloween but like to treat my nearest neighbors, at least.

Cod fillet with butter and garlic topping, mashed potatoes and gravy, fried okra and coffee........we ate out tonight.

Hilltop, harvest time for what and who are you feeding? Inquiring minds want to know! :-)

Late daylight and early darkness make for a dumb season. Mornings should be a sunny 85 and then start to warm up. Easy Roast Beef sandwich buried in gravy. And a quick banana split.
Boiling, in a pressure cooker?

I took a helping of chicken enchilada out of the freezer, added some left over baked sweet potatoes, and ended with dunking bread chunks into a flavored oil. Well, it was all good!

Late daylight and early darkness make me happy ! Fresh weather, good sleeping, cozy lamplight, bright sweaters, tangerine lipstick ! It's all good ! Pancakes tonight !

Yayagal: What all is in your boiled dinner?

Sue: Chili Soup sounds great, especially if it's cool and rainy, but I'll eat it anytime.

Georgysmom: I've never added a baked apple to oatmeal, but it sounds good. I often add walnuts to oatmeal or yogurt.

Hilltop: Can you make that TEN meals instead and deliver one to me? Tonight's meal sounds delicious.

Angelaid: I looked up a picture of a steak fajita. Looks mouth watering to me, even without your good sides.

Rhizo: Don't forget to make extras for me. I like how you're celebrating Halloween, especially with a special helper. This way you can treat those you want to, and have fun doing it.

Linda: Boy does that meal sound great! Never had okra but I'll take the rest.

OldFixer: How many days now? I love hot roast beef sandwiches with gravy (and often with mashed potatoes). I'll take a hot fudge sundae instead of a split.

Phyllis: No doubt it was all good. I'll take a dipped chunk of bread please.

rhizo_1 we are grain farmers and right now we're combining corn (soybeans are done). We have 6 full-time employees, 1 part-time and then my husband and son. Evening meals get delivered to the field each night about 6pm. I start cooking at 4pm. I pack each persons meal in a carryout container, then pack them in 2 thermal carriers which then fit in a rubbermaid tote. Also take bottled water.
The challenging part is finding everyone since truck (semi) drivers are on the road back and forth to the bin site. The combine and grain cart drivers are easy to find in the field. But sometimes the field is up to 30 miles away so keeping things hot is a challenge. Fortunately it's only 5-6 weeks of meals, 5 or 6 nights a week. We live near a very small town, but one night a week I can get a meal from our local grocer, or I can drive 14 miles to pick up Subway sandwiches or pizza if I'm not able to cook that night.

Next week after the time change delivering meals won't be as much fun because it will be dark by 6pm and then it's more challenging finding everyone.

Bless you, that's a lot of work. I've known some farm families and few work longer and harder.

Hilltop: Your story of fixing/taking the meals to the workers reminded me of when I was a preschooler and we lived in a rented farmhouse. At harvest time, the threshers would come around to do the fields surrounding us. Farmers wives would bring the food and actually cook some of the lunchtime meals outside in our yard. They'd bring and set up picnic tables/benches. It was great for us kids to stand around and watch all the 'festivities'. I've never seen so much food eaten so quickly in all my life since. Once the workers were fed and gone back to the fields, the women would eat and invite us kids to join them. The food was wonderful. (And all of this done without paper plates.) God bless farmers.
