Update on cat bite

Thank you for all of the good wishes on my cat bite. Well, I ended up in the hospital for four days as the red streaks were getting worse. There, of course, I got on a different antibiotic IV and had watchful nurses to look over me! It was so great to see the streaks diminish the second day. I'm home now and only have to take oral antibiotics for a week, but was sent home with the warning to call immediately if anything isn't right. But all seems well now. Again, thank you all for your concern.

I'm glad that you seem to finally be on the mend. What an ordeal!! I had to go that route last Dec after my manicuring scissors slipped and went into my index finger knuckle. It's no fun, but was so glad the treatment was available.

I hope you continue to do better each day.

Probably needs worming, specifically tape worms, which is a two step process. You give the first dose, and EXACTLY 21 days later he gets the second dose. My cats just got wormed for tape worms, and their signs included being thin rather suddenly and odd coughing. Vet diagnosed from my relating problems. NOT taking 7 barn cats to the Vet!! Figured they got the tape worms from catching varmints around the barn, part of their job description! My job to keep them healthy. They do get cat chow daily as well. Has cat been vaccinated for the common cat diseases? If it costs too much, you could vaccinate him yourself. Some of those diseases include coughing as a sign of problems. You just have to purchase the vaccines from one of the Vet supply catalogs. You will need two doses to get him started, then a yearly booster. I would strongly suggest you include Rabies vaccine in that yearly boostering list. Rabies shot protects YOU from him getting bitten by a carrier. Our barn cats are very playful, like to "play bite" as you scratch bellies. They never bite down, but it only takes a small tooth scratch and saliva to infect YOU or children if cat is not vaccinated for Rabies. Rabies is a cheap vaccine and you won't need the treatment shots if you do get accidentally bitten or scratched. The marks on your cat could be from a number of things, which other folks mentioned. For fleas, I see a dirtyish grey on the belly skin of animal like a dog. Might be harder to see on a cat with thick hair on all the body parts. Our barn cats are pretty tame, I would probably wash them using a flea soap to clean them up. Scabs seem to do well just being washed and having antibiotic ointment rubbed in. That method doesn't leave anything for cat to lick off later. With big or nasty holes, infections, I might treat the cat wounds/sores twice a day, the same way. Probably would lock cat up in my big dog crate in the barn or garage so I can be sure to locate him daily for treatment until his holes looked better. I also would look for another Vet, this one is not very interested in keeping your animals cared for, or helping you to care for them well.

I have a male cat, Tripp, who is almost 5. Of course, he's always done the kneading thing like most cats do. But, since December, he's started kneading with his back legs and hunching. Then, I hear a funny meow. At first I thought it was digestive problems because when we got our newest kitty, Boomer (who is now over a year), he got constipated and meowed funny. But now, its when he gets on my lap or climbs on me when I'm laying down. A vet told me that he is becoming aroused, which I noticed was true when I found him to lick himself after he gets down. He will also bite me at times. Now, he does this to our couch since I make him get down so much. And he has always made this same meow when we would bring our girl dog, Zoe inside. He would sit near me or my husband when we were petting/playing with her inside, and then make the meow and jump on her back and bite her, holding the bite for a very long time. I always thought he was jealous of us playing with her and not him, but now I see the correlation!

I think it could be one of two things. He was either aroused (is he neutered?) or during your petting, you hit a spot on his body he found very painful (is he arthritic or have dental problems or possible hidden injuries?) After having said that, I remembered my male cat (both young and neutered) did that as a large kitten until he got another young kitten for a partner and pal. They run each other ragged playing now and he has settled down immensely. He just simply had more energy than he knew what to do with and no outlet.

I agree, he needs a check-up. That said, when a cat bites "for real," its teeth can go right through to the bone, so Pumpkin still seems to be exercising a bit of restraint, even though he drew blood. (Be sure to disinfect anything he makes bleed, even if it is shallow.) I hope you will find out something that explains his change in temperament and can be fixed easily. Like the others, my first thought was also that he might be in discomfort and it might not be apparent to his human family.

Great news Phyllis! I've had a couple friends who had arm and hand swelling from cat bites, but no red streaks. Glad you took it seriously and got to the doctor!

Good news . Glad to hear it . I forget the story though. Was it YOUR cat or a strange one who bit you? Cat bites are very serious business as you well know.

Lily, I had tried to break up a guest cat attacking mine. She actually is a nice cat with people, but hates other cats. She is now back living with grandson and wife and enjoying herself, I know.

I had a cat bite once it was my DD's cat~~~at urgent care they said cat bites are the worst of the animal bites to get? If we had not known the cat and knew he had all his shots I would have had to have a different type of treatment. They also had to fill out paper work to send in to Animal Control, did you have to do that?

Yours sounds so horrible so glad you are on the mend;)

I've had 15 cats over many years and have never been bitten by any of them, not even scratched badly. When there's a rare fight I get my water bottle and they break it up. I wonder why their bites are so serious. I'm glad it all went well with you , Phyliss

Glad you are recovering well. The one time I had a cat bite I was trying to hold the cat still and she bit the top of my
hand. It started swelling and I went into the Dr in a couple of hours because it was getting worse. He looked up cat
bacteria to make sure to give me the right medication. It worked out fine but I was surprised at how fast the swelling happened.
