Bringing in plants.

I need some advice. I have a big hanging outdoor plant I need to bring in before it freezes. What do I do to make sure no bugs come in with it, mainly spiders? I will admit I have the blackest thumb in the state of Ky and can't believe the plant is still alive. I'm going to try my best to keep it alive over the winter.

I'll be happy to offer suggestions but not without knowing what kind of plant it is. If you don't know the name, a good picture will do the job.

Yes, a picture, or the name of the plant would be helpful to us, to help you. Besides, is this a plant that will survive the indoors???

Rather than taking the time to just parrot back information that is readily available online, I'd suggest a Google search under each individual botanical (not common) name. Most of the plants you list are typically grown as houseplants, so overwintering should not be a big issue. But warmth and bright (if not direct) light are necessary for most, so a dark, cool basement may not be an ideal location. patchouli - Pogostemon cablin cigar plant = Cuphea ignea lemon tree = Citrus x limon or Citrus x meyeri (second is most likely). brugmansia and iochroma are very closely related, so the same type of winter care would apply to both. streptocarpella and alsobia are Gesneriads, the same family as African violets, and require similar care.

You could bring them in. Could you cover them with something clear to keep them clean and out in that nice hot weather you are having? Last year we had a Fire burning on the Mainland, not the Island and this is what the Sun looked like. This was all smoke not haze or clouds. Rick

Kevin, should I even bother? lol Maybe you will see this post? I will be bringing my plants in that require temps above 60 at all times. That means fancy Begonia, herbs, hoya, orchids and others tropical plants. The night temps after today will be getting much cooler and I know they will suffer with longer cold nights now. Some orchids can stay outside. Is that plant wilting? Lot's of warm temps, sunlight and consistent organic spray for pests will keep it thriving. Not sure about the soil choice since most of these plants like to dry out rapidly during the darker days and cooler conditions. Are you thinking of bringing anymore things in? Using lights? Bring parsley plant indoors?

Years ago when I lived in a mild climate, I had a potted parsley that lived 2 years. I didn't know the taste and texture change (we didn't use it for cooking- I just liked growing herbs at the time.) Anyway, the second year, the plant got HUGE and gorgeous, so if you can winter it over and let it grow next year, it might still look really neat even if it doesn't taste so great anymore. All this talk about bugs too, I recently had centipedes coming out of a houseplant. They were smallish (about 1") and kind of cute, and only showed up in the early morning. I'd rather have not had them though. You never know what you're going to bring in with a plant.

Ok, I looked at where you live.. it's in the United States. I live in Oklahoma, and it stays out here, and survives the winter just fine.

oopes, just googled, and it says, it is a houseplant.

I only know the outside plant, with purple leaves, and like I said, it does fine outside even over the winter.

These plants are hardy and do well in low light indoors. Be prepared to squish any bugs that may crawl out of the pot.

you can put a tsp of dish soap into a watering can filled with water and water the plant til the water runs out the bottom. it will chase out any critters in the soil and won't harm the plant. spray the leaves with a solution of the soapy water to get any bugs off of them. good luck!! :)
