Working on a basket repair. :)

My aunt has had to leave her home so I got some of her old baskets. Every basket has "issues" like missing handles, broken sides, etc., but I can restore or repair most of it to make the baskets functional again! I love being able to save someone's hard work. :)

I'm not good at taking BEFORE pics. lol! I had already started filling in the broken sides on this large willow basket, but did think to take this:

And here's what it looks like after I've done some filling:

Pretty cool to be able to save it! I've completed the repair on the sides of the basket and am currently staining my fixes to match the old basket patina. :)

That's so great. You must feel really good about the basket and your self! I have a bread basket that was given to me 55 years ago at a bridal shower. It's kind of falling apart but has great sentimental value so I hold on to it. I should look into having it repaired.

Look up the model number of your machine at SearsPartsDirect.com, find the silverware basket. Sears lists the correct manufacturer part number. You can then search for that part number at other online sources to find the best price.

I used to work with insurance companies for storm damage. If you think you will get a brand new roof because an area is damaged, you probably want to lower your bar a bit. Insurance companies will generally replace (which is a repair) one side of the roof if a tree fell on it, unless the roof has damage all over it (hail usually). As far as those "independent" adjusters, most of them in my area are working for roofing companies in sales. My best advice is to slam the door in their face. You will be on the hook to them, not your insurance company. When I was in the business, insurance companies would contact my company and usually say to fix what needs fixed. No questions asked. It all depended on the insured, sometimes they wanted to get involved and just get a check cut to them. I'm sure your insurance company will work with you for the least inconvenience for them. In all honesty, I believe the adjusters are too busy to look at a couple thousand dollar claim.

Will maid of Orleans jasmine work in a hanging basket?

I ordered maid of Orleans jasmine thinking it would trail downward for a hanging basket. Now that it has arrived it doesn't look like it will work as I had planned, it appears more upright. If maid of Orleans won't work what are some fragrant trailing suggestions that can handle full sun indoors (besides Hoya)? Thanks.

Leaking Rain Gutter - will this repair work?

Lexel is great stuff. Butyl caulk is commonly used on gutters. As mentioned above, fiberglass screen/ mesh is great for re-inforcing a repair. (Use the screen or mesh with JB Weld for a lot of repairs.) With a gutter, I would use Lexel or that liquid rubber roofing stuff (used that to coat some rusting dishwasher racks long ago. Held up a surprising length of time.). I have Lexel in the dishwasher I currently own. It's holding the end cap on one of the upper rack slides. Has been holding for 4-5 months, so far. Lowe's has Lexel.

Thank you, everyone, for your nice comments! I do feel good about saving a basket. Maybe some day someone will care the same for one of mine. :)

georgysmom, If you would like to post or send me photos of your basket, I might be able to provide some info/help.

jasdip, I cheated on the materials. lol! in this instance I used reed to repair a split buff willow basket. Now I'm using tea to stain and "age" the reed for a better match. :O)

Great job, nice save!

My husband put his foot thru one of my baskets and I fixed it quickly by weaving twill tape in the broken places. Yes, it looks funny/weird, but it's functional and kind of fits in my sewing/craft area. LOL All my supplies to do it properly are old and probably too brittle, since they've been in the attic for 20+ years.
