Do You Listen to Jian Ghomeshi on PBS Radio?

I enjoying his interviews with people from all walks of life -- not so much the infrequent rock music portions, at least before he gets into talking with the musicians. LOL I've seldom heard anyone as able to draw out the people he's interviewing. (Well, maybe Dick Cavett.) It's also a relief to hear someone who doesn't constantly insert himself into the interview.

His program originates in Canada and is rebroadcast on WBEZ Chicago at 8 p.m. Mon. - Thurs. Recently some people have been subbing for him -- makes me realize his unique ability.

Cavett's Canadian, too, right?

Cavett's from Nebraska.

Our NPR station doesn't carry the show you mention, but I know I'd like it. I adore Terry Gross.

A number of programs are interlinked on CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) and NPR/PRI. He originates from CBC Radio One, in this part of Canada at 10:05 a.m. and 10:05 p.m.

Some of his programs are carried on CBC TV, as well. I think that you can find them on the internet at www.cbc.ca, then go to their TV section and watch them there.

A lot of interesting stuff on CBC radio ... says this addict. Some of you have noticed ... as I've spoken here sometimes of a certain topic that I thought might be of interest and given the contact as via cbc.ca.

I think Cavett is/was English.

I am so glad I found someone to share my interests. :-D I love NPR. Been listening to it off and on for a few years. Much more so for the past year. When the programs get too depressing, I switch to a classical music station. :-) AND PBS! Is anybody watching PBS? I am a big fan of PBS even though we have Direct TV. In Chicago, there are 2 PBS stations. I watch these 2 stations 99% of the times. I love news programs from different countries around the world, commentaries and documentaries--both on NPR & PBS. News programs on the mainstream stations are too narrow and focus only on the US and US interests shutting out the rest of the world. And is anybody interested in foreign films? I've been watching Spanish, Dutch, French, German, Swedish, Japanese films. lol. And Chinese. Even the Middle East. I am enormored of Japanese films, most specifically Akira Kurosawa's films. :-D

Oh, yes. I love spendid table. My favorite part is the couple at the begining, Jane and Michael Stern ( I think) who do the road food thing. You have to love some body who seriously considers eating a deep fried baloney sandwich. That's a pretty nice web site too. I keep an old set of ear phones plugged into the computer so I don't have to hear the noises from the computer. Thank you for pointing out that I could use them to hear stuff I would enjoy instead of just hanging there.

Neither DH nor I want 'background noise'. I will sometimes listen to WGN (Chicago talk radio) if I'm driving more than a few miles. DH listens to a sports radio station sometimes during baseball and football seasons. I like to catch the news on NPR before I get up or listen to it for 30 minutes at bedtime if I'm in bed before DH. (I like classical music and opera' he doesn't.) We catch GMA or CNN on TV for a few minutes while we eat breakfast, lunch and dinner in the 'breakfast room'. We'll watch Jeopardy at dinnertime Saturdays. Our large TV is only in use for something we've recorded (like PBS Masterpiece) or for a DVD movie at 'teatime'. DH will use it to watch a specific game involving 'his' teams. (Well, I do use it for the Wii, too.) I roomed (briefly!) with a girl who *needed* noise 24/7. We once had neighbors whose TV was NEVER turned off -- or down -- unless a visitor requested it in order to have a conversation without shouting. I wondered if it was a barrier so they wouldn't have to talk to one another.

It came with my new car, but it's not user friendly in my car, the way my radio is set up, so I rarely use it. It mainly gets used on road trips. It does come in handy though if we are in the car and there is a sports game on that is important to dh or my boys b/c we can almost always find it broadcast on one of the many sports channels. Jujubean, what a coincidence that you mentioned Serial. My neighbor just told me about it yesterday and I listened to the first installment this morning while weeding through email on my computer. I actually live just south of Baltimore, and was living here at the time of that murder but I don't remember it at all. The journalist does raise interesting questions in first installment about whether people can honestly account for their time on any particular day, especially one that occurred many weeks prior. I really should acquaint myself better with what is broadcast on Sirius as I spend a lot of time in my car and probably would enjoy many of the channels.

Catch him on his original radio program by going to www.cbc.ca, then to Radio One, and to the program called q, i.e. www.cbc.ca/q ... and I'm not sure of the title for the TV section.

Would an item called by the name you use ... be a Japanese version of a (junior) hot dog?

I LOVE Jian Ghomeshi. I listen whenever I can (mostly in the car). As mentioned by OJ, he is on the CBC in Canada. He is a very intelligent interviewer, sounding very casual and laid-back, and as mentioned by Chisue, is able to draw people out in his interviews. He interviews some very interesting people.

Another program that I really enjoy follows Jian Ghomeshi's show, I believe once a week, called This is That. It presents wacky ideas in a faux news format, where they "interview" "experts" who sound completely legitimate and convincing. Would be called satirical, I guess. Once they had a "news item" where U.S. border guards would now be dressing as characters from The Wizard of Oz, to put people at ease. Really funny, and because of the way it's presented, some listeners call and leave indignant and incredulous phone messages!

I've never heard of him, so I'm guessing my two PBS stations don't carry the show. I'll see if I can listen online. Thanks!

Audio files and podcasts of most radio shows from most sources are easily found.

I personally don't care for this guy. He's shallow and has a toady/pandering manner when doing interviews. If interviewing the guy who killed John Lennon, he'd say something like:

"So tell me, Mr. Chapman, how did you come around to realizing that John Lennon needed to be murdered and that it was your responsibility to do it? And if some time passed between then and when you were able to accomplish it, how were you able to control your anger?"

Snidely -- Yes, I hear some soft soaping with certain guests. Thing is, his method works. Have you had to deal with show biz 'personalities'? They expect this. I don't hear 'shallow' with other guests.

IMO, Ghomeshi is very adroit at setting a safe course, then letting the person go. Some do prove themselves idiots -- in their own words. (They never seem to realize it.)

Show biz personalities don't interest me, I tend to turn off programs where one is featured.

I think Brian Lamb of C-Span (yeah, C-Span) is as good an interviewer as I've ever heard. Now retired from being the company's CEO, he has a weekly one hour program, "Q+A", dedicated to interviewing "interesting people". Whether from government, the media, arts, or whatever. He has no agenda and is a master at coming up with thoughtful questions. Available on TV, the website, or as a podcast.

I also like Lawrence Lopate of WNYC. Though he and the program are very New York-centric (which doesn't interest me), many of his interview segments are of broader interest and catch my attention. Like Lamb, he's a thought provoking guy who tries to bring out the best of his guests and topics. Because WNYC is the NY public radio affiliate, they have the right location and clout to get worthwhile guests. I listen to segments of interest in podcast form.

Always interested in hearing about other good interviewers.

I guess I've heard more mainstream guests on Ghomeshi than the rock and famous-for-being-famous types. I have been amused by some such interviews though!
