Hi Everyone,

I've been MIA for a long, long time. Getting through some tough life struggles like many of you. Recovering from a 2 year illness. As part of this journey back to health I have posted a Weekly Support Thread in the Diet Forum.

The Diet Forum has been dead since the mass exodus to a FB page created for that purpose. I am restarting the effort because I like GardenWeb and feel that not everyone wants to have a FB account in order to get a diet buddy.

I'm back on the Diet Forum and looking for buddies to join me.
I don't have the energy to post everywhere right now. I have missed many of you and wish everyone health and happiness always.

Hi! So nice to see you're joining us. You won't worry about bottom drains if you put them on the side of the container ;-) Just take a sharp steak knife and add one stab per side, close to the bottom. TJs tom containers may have too many holes..you don't want to have too much drainage or ventilation because the moisture will drain and wick away to fast. You can tape over at least half of them with duct or packing tape. A favorite cheapo of mine for sowing toms is to use a styrafoam coffee cup. Put a hole in the bottom with a pencil and you can write the name on the rim with a ball point pen...like a bic. I like bics because the ink doesn't fade fast. And if it did, the name is still scribed into the cup. You can nest several cups into a tinfoil tray--add drainage to that, and then slip it all into a big baggie or even a grocery store bag. You need to put slits in that too. Or you can cover the cups with plastic wrap held on with tape or rubberbands. RBs may need replacing in a month or two because they break down in UV rays, but you'll have germination so fast that the point is moot. Use the link below to get some ideas of how I do it, but you can flex it to adapt any way you want with whatever you have on hand. Thanks everyone, They needed a bit of seperating and I stepped them up closer to the florescent lights, so now they are getting better coloration. There are still over 20 of them that are younger seedlings that have not gone so far in their development, but they are still growing more every day. Now I have some sunny windows to put them in, but it is a bit hot with the florescent lights and the heat in South Texas all at once (even in winter). I am trying out some window shades, one that is a charcoal colored sun blocker screen, and I just cut a bunch of decorative holes in it to provide dappled light while cutting heat and glare. That with my strong floros should help out the light greedy plants a bit more.

I love growing plants from seed but have had varying success with germination. This year I started some seeds inside according to the best moon phase and so far, I have had the best germination ever. I prefer sowing seeds directly in the ground and did that a week and a half ago. I still have more to plant but I don't want to wait until the next best phase so I think this will be a good opportunity to see if there is any difference. To moccasinlanding: I assure you it is Blue Mammoth I have tried in the past. To Ken: I have yet to find anything left at the door; although I had to adapt quickly back in 2011 when my mother brought to me BOTH T-Rex and Blue Mammoth. And yes I smiled and did say thank you very nicely. Having both WAS NOT my plan at that moment. She is threatening to "share" some of her Mouse Ears next summer (not sure what variety she is talking about as of yet. Honesty I do get nearly 100% sun for about 2 to 3 hours from about noon in my garden (working on eliminating that next year). 'Popcorn' simply dropped its green in August; it did have an intense gold yellow as it faded. I thought that moment was exciting. 'Vulcan' took off, and exploded into growth making every other hosta look bad last year. 'Gorgon' was a close second in that department. 'Frosted Mouse Ears' and 'Holy Mouse Ears' each seem to have settled in with polite growth. 'Xanadu Empress Wu' was planted in August, and that even tried to take off by growing leaves that were twice the size of what it came with. In short I am expecting a 86% (18 out of 21 plants) survival rate next spring with only three plants not coming up (as mentioned at my blog). Those being ... Blue Mammoth, Itsy Bity Spider, and Popcorn. Naturally they have the option of surprising me, and appearing on cue. Everything else looked in good shape when I cut everything back Mid-October for their long winter nap! Finally Ken, to be honest, I do have a few theories as to why my 2013 survival rate was 56% (from 18 hosta to 10 hosta). I can't discuss those until I see what happens next spring (2014; trying to be objective here folks). Hint keep watching my blog for a lengthy narrative on that topic there. I met a long time friend from Canada on the 'Diet Forum', over 10 years ago. We did Suzanne Somers 'Somersize' diet. A few others joined in we all did well on it, liked it~~then we faded out. Several moved over to the KT, which is when Spike owned it or ran it??

Mcpeg, I remember you from quite a long time ago and hope you are doing better these days; I'm sorry you've had such a long illness. I wish I could say I would join in, but I'm not a dieter; exercise will have to be it for me. How nice of you to set this up!

I think I recognize your name also mcpeg. Welcome back. I certainly need diet and exercise that's for darn sure. I'll check out your page. I just wish I could come up with the will power and stamina to get somewhere.

Hi Again!

Yes I remember those who have been here for awhile. I come and go. I have posted when depressed and wanting not to be here anymore. I have come one heck of a long way since those days.

My mother passed away in 2008. I had it out with dealing with the estate with my family and in the end had to stop all communication for my own sanity. I learned a lot about love and greed. Greed is terrible. Family sometimes can be toxic. Once I learned to love myself enough to do what had to be done I let go of the pressure and stress of dealing with my siblings. Since then I have been on a very positive path back to a strong sense of self worth, self love and the ability to love those around me again. My world is blossoming these days in so many ways. I live in today. As they say if you live in your past you can be depressed. If you live in your future you can become anxious.

I am here, now. As much as there are challenges in life I am enjoying a very frugal lifestyle with some very special friends. I am ready to take on a little more.

The Weekly thread is taking on life. The Diet Club is breathing again. I would love to see those of you who would like a buddy to help you along with your healthy goals to join.

For all my friends on this forum I have been known also as Quiltbunny, Queensharbot. When things settle a little more I may return to post again here. There are many wonderful people in this world and I feel truly blessed to have so many in my life these days.

Hi Phyllis - Glad to see you too. Fond memories of Edinburgh day. Yes I am a world away from where I was and much happier now. Every day is precious.
